    I always revisit your channel to see 'how it's done' right with virtual instruments. I like how you display the midi notes in this video. I do however miss the artwork in the background. Any chance you could do what Ashton Gleckman does with showing the midi notes 'over' a cool background image in your next composition? Love you work, big fan here, keep going!

    Hey Tobias, AMAZING work! I stumbled upon your channel when looking for realistic orchestral plugins for Ableton. I'm curious, how do you start your compositions? Do you have another program you write all of this down in and then create it in cubase? Or do you wing it and do all your composition as you go along in cubase?
    I would LOVE to see a tutorial of you just going through some of your thought processes when creating your tracks. Or possibly just starting a layout for a new track could be pretty interesting to watch too!
    These tracks are really inspiring for me and I can't wait to get my hands on EastWest to start building the pieces that are floating in my head. Thanks so much for the motivation!

      thank you very much for your kind words :)
      all of my compositions start on the piano! sometimes the whole piece is written there but most of the time i'm only doing rough sketches of the pieces and orchestrate it than in cubase.
      a lot of you guys are demanding tutorials but i dont have the equipment needed for a proper tutorial with a piano-cam and stuff... but im working on it! :)
      I'm glad a can be a motivation for you!

    Incredible.. could you give me a few suggestions on how to learn to compose like this? I'm willing to spend a lot of time on it :)

    • @TobiWobi7
      @TobiWobi7  Před 6 lety +3

      the advice i give everyone asking me is to study great filmcomposers like J. Williams and John Powell or any other composer that uses the classical orchestra! just listen to a lot of pieces and examine them very carefully! I started off covering pieces and doing mockups of existing pieces! That way you learn how all the different instruments are used and what they are capable of! You really need to get to know the orchestra. Of course it is also important to have some kind of musical education! If you can play instruments yourself and are able to reed sheetmusic it is way easier to actually understand how music "works" and how your orchestrating makes sense! I am a brassplayer for example and every time i write stuff for the trumpet section i think about me playing it or whether the notes i wrote are playable for the trumpet or not! Some things just sound wrong or strange because it is not written the way the instrument would play it in real live. It is also very important to know certain things about harmonics and chords! A lot of good youtube videos offer great opportunitys to learn this stuff :)

    • @fluctura
      @fluctura Před 6 lety

      Tobias Scheel Thanks alot for your gopd advise! :) So I will go exactly the way you're proposing and start to "compose" mockups of pieces already done. My way is mostly "by ear". I do play the Ukulele and bit Piano. I can also understand sheet music but not read and play without hickups. Well, music theory is a very interesting topic and I'm learning alot about it at the moment. As a software developer, I would love to write tools that help to compose music too. With some music theory background, I can already imagine some algorithms that can "generate" chord structures/progressions that will "sound good". Or answer questions like: What chord will sound good following X... or what note added to this chord will make my chord sound more sad/happy etc. Playing around with that kind of stuff might not make me a better composer.... but its a fun way to motivate myself to learn all the theory :D

    • @TobiWobi7
      @TobiWobi7  Před 6 lety

      you are very welcome :)
      although i think your approach to the composingprocess using an app or a software is not the right way... music should come from the heart and from the soul! this is the reason why williams and although zimmers music is so good! the melodies or, regarding hans zimmer especially, the chord progressions are most of the times very simple and " well known" but this is not what makes their music so great. for example williams did say about the indiana jones theme, that it is very simple but it took him weeks and weeks to create the overall feeling of the soundtrack. the problem was not writing the notes or the chords in general, but it was very difficult to work with theses few notes. simple, yet elegant. he managed to modulate the theme through out the movies and made it an iconic sound. in my opinion you can not just let a computer or a software do the work because it doesent actually know if the result sounds good to a human ear or suits a certain atmosphere! Sure, in terms of music theory it would certainly help but zimmer and williams very often break the "rules" of music theory. thats probably why there music is so unique.
      But i get your intention! as i said, it could be a good help for beginners but the way i see it, music is one of the genuine aspects that apartes us from all other known living beings. Creating music is not for everyone, same goes for sports or other arts. not everyone is designated to be a composer, so why force it :)
      im trying to say, if you really want to be a musician and a composer, you need to study, train and finally become a good musican. if one is not willing to pursue this rocky way, one should do something else, because clearly, you are lacking passion.
      you are a good example of how to approach the art of music because you said you are willing to spend A LOT of time on it and thats very important! Except if youre a genuis of course :) and as long as your clever idea helps you to find motivation, its all fine and of course this is just my opinion! good luck with your progress! :)

    Incredible. How do you get EWQL Gold to sound so well balanced and smooth? (Do you play with the original ADSR envelope of each instrument? I always think they have too much punch and can't never adjust it properly) by the way, East West guys themselves can't get even close to this realism... just compare to their official demos. Concrats, Tobias.

    • @TobiWobi7
      @TobiWobi7  Před 6 lety +3

      Neptunian Fly hey there! I don't know what ADSR envelope means sry!😂
      I think the "Secret" is to pay attention to the Instruments and how they interact with each other in real live! The Flute often doubels the strings for more Color and deph e.g. But You wont Hear it very much! It's just for Color! In reallive when there are 20 violins playing You would not Hear the flute either! And those pairs can be build with a lot of Instruments! Cello and Bassoon (again, Bassoon only for Color)
      Trumpet and Oboe, or, piccolo + flute + strings
      Clarinett and Cello/viola ... the Winds are supposed to be the most "quiet" Instrumentfamily, while the brasssection is the loudest. Some say ff strings should never be louder than ff Horns! And so on! Symphonic orchestra Gold Provides a lot of neat articulations You can use!

    I'm extraordinarily curious- what reverb do you use? Is it the one built into EWQLSO (if so, which impulse(s) do you prefer?) or do you use a separate reverb like East West's "Spaces"? I've been struggling with getting a good reverb for a while now and the sense of "space" in your pieces is profound, as well as the sound of your instruments.
    Speaking of which, do you have the version of Gold that has the "Close" mic position? If so- do you use it very much? Or do you just stick with the "Stage" mic position?

    • @TobiWobi7
      @TobiWobi7  Před 6 lety

      TheShadyOrchestra hello! I use the reverb provided by EWQLSOG! But not on all Instruments! Thats how there is so much "Space"!
      I also only use the standart stage Position and im not able zu change mic positions.
      Hope i Coups help!

    • @theshadyorchestra7630
      @theshadyorchestra7630 Před 6 lety

      Thank you very much! That's interesting actually- very insightful as well! How do you choose which instruments to apply reverb to and which do you tend to leave alone? Do you use the default reverb "EW Hall LR" or do you choose others from the selection they provide (Like the "Scoring Stages" or "Hollywood Halls")?

    • @TobiWobi7
      @TobiWobi7  Před 6 lety

      TheShadyOrchestra it depends on the orchestration but mostly i use reverb on brass! I tent not to use reverb on the winds but as i said i really depends! :)
      Yes, i always use the Ew Hall LR :) sometimes i reduse the Volume of the reverb to make more Space.
