  • Many thanks to Pat Hicks for sending me this DVD. some of the beginning wasn't balanced and it was tough trying to fix the distortion..
    Pete Jolly on Keyboards.. Joe Brancato on Drums .Jeff Berlin on Bass and HR on guitar..Was filmed at GIT or as known now as Musician's Institute in maybe 1988 to 1990

    Im a big fan of HR since the early 60s....saw him in 76 with Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow, Les Paul, Bucky Pizerelli, Buddy Emmons, etc. in Dallas. Met him and talked to him a little...very gracious, nice guy....smoking performance...one of a kind.

      Yes, I recorded most of it on a cassette recorder but loaned it to a "friend" who lost it.

      yes! i attended 2 HR seminars in the 70s, i even got on stage and played a tune with him in 1978.

      I think the tune was Giant Steps, where I just held each chord while he jammed over it, I think there's a cassette somewhere 41 years ago!

    Thanks so much for these posts. Great memories for me. When i was a teanager HR was my hero..I sat in front of him and watched him play the tunes in these videos..Also played with him at several of his seminars..Great teacher and very nice guy....

    First album I bought as a teen was HR's Whatever's Fair in the mid 60's. Neat how HR could, I call it, "popify" a song, play it brilliantly and complete it in under 3 minutes. One of my favorites is "On a Clear Day".

      No, I just know that he made a comment on one of my videos about 10 years ago when I was just starting to make some reasonable chord solos. I think it was "Blame it on my Youth" where Billy thought I sounded like his bro LOL.

    I did the gear for Jeff and Howard. In fact the company I worked for (over 45 years) still has 3 of Jeff's basses including his 67 P bass. Rick at Royal was trying to keep them. I was fired and had to sign a NDA so I can't tell Jeff

      Ron... what year was this concert ? Did HR have just the FUSION guitar he is playing or did he also have another FUSION guitar as a back up? Also what kind of MESA BOOGIE is that ? and what did HR think of it?

      @@SIRONEDRAGON It must have been after 1980. He had many guitars. We carried a large trunk full of all different kinds of string instruments, banjo, 12 string, gut string, fender, gibson...I don't remember that Boogie at all. I was working for about 12 very busy player at the time, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Al Casey, Paul Jackson Jr, Ray Parker, David T Walker, Dennis Budimir, Mitch Holder......

      @@ronchrisman HR helped Ron design those Bensons...but the amp in QUEEN BEE Video and this video around 5:45 I posted from this same concert looks a bit large for a Benson amp.. it looks more like a Mesa Boogie to me ?

No, I never did meet HR, but I do know Jay, his son...and did an interview with him for Just Jazz Guitar magazine, about three years ago... Jay's a nice guy!...       Juan I went to GIT in 1983 and saw HR maybe more times than most of the guys at school did. It seemed like I was at school a lot LOL ....But HR was always really nice to me...and he let me play his blonde custom Oval hole guitar.. OR should I say I tried to play it. The strings were SO heavy and thick and the strings SO high off the fretboard I gave it back pretty quick LOL....
