Great video. But as a point of critique: Some of the questions made in interviews have the potential to harm the person for the rest of their life. You have a great responsibility!

2:20 That is a lie! United States of America (USA) did not start the Korean War. North Korea started the Korean War on the 25th June 1950 because North Korea invaded South Korea and ceased after an armistice on the 27th of July 1953.
The documentary was simultaneously honest and compelling _(all within the parameters of their government)._ If Kim Jong Un hoped we'd find affection and admiration for North Koreans, he got what he wanted; if CNN hoped to reveal new things about North Korea, it also won. There's a reason Kim Jong Un allows this journalist to keep returning. This report _(or story)_ from Will Ripley is among CNN's best work.
Yeah this is a great summary. Before I say this I want to say that North Korea is probably still a horrible place to live with strict rules and horrible punishments. That being said I thought it was more horrible than this documentary shows. I thought there was barely, if any, entertainment. I thought it focused most of ita energies on production. To see arcades (even though those arcades had ulterior motives), rock climbing, rowing, etc. was surprising. When yhey got out of Pyongyang was more what I expected from the whole country. Even then there were places to dine out. Im not sure how much use these places get without journalists there but the kids didnt seem like they were doing anything out of the norm. Interesting. That is not to say things are fine there its just there is more personal enjoyment in life than I expected.
We all live with propaganda everyday, it is just we are free to follow the propaganda we choose to follow. Some choose right others left and those in the middle see the propaganda of both sides.

North Korea is actually just like any other countries around the world. They actually have hopes, dreams, emotions ,etc but still they're actually living in a different and also ruthless police state.

@@deidradahl2802 without USA's help, the South Korea would be under communist parties.

Yes & in America idiots have a ghost named "God" apparently looming over them too. Can't exactly ever see him though.......
Will is literally playing with fire in the entire documentary oh my god
Ok, it is relevant even today. I never got over what happened to the kid in North Korea. He begged for mercy, and he ended up in a coma. I will never except it. I will never forget.
I assume they just waited on one US citizen to break a rule to use them as a pawn in their political chess game.
Hast du auch die unzähligen Toten der amerikanischen "Befreiungen" nie vergessen? 😂
you are an albanian speaking german haha what a joke@@TILL_OFARIM
@@TILL_OFARIM I hate the US but you can't really compare them and North Korea, because at least they don't need walls and guns to keep people in their country
Wow, amazing reporting! All the other North Korea videos show the same images from the same tour itinerary… finally something fresh. Good job👍
33:11. She's checking you out. 😮
Did this Reporter Return back ??
Love these documentaries, feel sorry for the people though.
I remember watching the Darkside of the Ring when WCW went to North Korea. It was really intense, after that I am glad I can safely visit North Korea from the safety of my home in CT, via this documentary.
Since WHEN did World Championship Wrestling to go North Korea??? Is there even a video of that? Or pictures?

Ric Flair said he was paranoid the whole time. Like an open air prison.
Excellent show
That sooo saad 😢❤🎉 god Bless them all 🥰
If a North Korean DJ fails to include the songs praising their leaders in the music queue, then that's the end of his career
He has genuinely tried to respect and understand the culture, particularly his interaction with children.
The Communist News Network shares the same ideology and cult of personality. Why would you expect them to be hostile to each other?
There is a difference between a culture and a cult of personality. Underneath the cult of personality is a culture that is consistent with the Southeast Asian heritage. Things like filial piety, drawing a sense of identity from the group as opposed to the individual, and so on. These expressions of culture have been appropriated and instrumentalised by the regime to serve its purposes. It takes a discerning, experienced, and compassionate journalist to understand the nuance and to recognize and respect the culture even in the context of such extreme brutality and fear that is clearly evident in this documentary. @@69ElChistoso

I've liked the documentary, but you could put some effort in the subtitles which are desynchronized. I speak approximative English, and very hard to follow.
Well done. interesting documentary
Never seen such a balanced documentary of North Korea . well done
Balanced in which direction?!😅😅
@@skreety0455balenced literally means its not biased. there are tons of documentaries biased against the dprk and some towards the dprk but he's saying he thinks that this is relatively balanced between left and right.
I honestly wonder how hard it was after asking those questions to people, to not be like "well, thats actually untrue, and you are being brainwashed" Like I would have bursted because my heart goes out to these people. They don't know how bad they have it, and have been fed lies their entire life. Kudos to CNN for not getting anyone in trouble and trying to be as respectful as possible while asking and answering questions.
10:49 very risky question to ask here.
that wake up music they play thru the city really gives some trippy wierd vibes dude....
I wrote my paper in my pro seminar in college on North Korea. 25 pages so I had to do a lot of research. What a strange but intriguing place. Amazing in so many ways good and bad.
Is there a way to read your paper online?
I’ll take that as a compliment
@@Koko-ql4fg no it was nothing groundbreaking lol. I did learn a lot about the place. It’s almost like another planet how they live. There are no clear images of their concentration camps they are known to have. Only satellite and hidden video. South Korean and Chinese human rights groups drop usb drives via balloon to random places in NK so people can be taught things that are hidden. Some have porn. Things like that intrigued me.
Not sure about so many goods..
Wow 25 whole pages?? 🤣
50 seconds in, it says "Original Air Date June 2018" and also "Originally Aired 2017". Which one's which?
I think music and sound effects need to be turned up. I almost heard what was being said
Great video.
But as a point of critique: Some of the questions made in interviews have the potential to harm the person for the rest of their life. You have a great responsibility!
top be fair, it's not his responsibility to keep the communist system intact and stable. pretending everything is fine is precisely what got these people in their current situation
Amazing and informative documentary. I hope we can get something on the recent state of North Korea
"Have you seen an american movie?" What a dumb question, if he says yeah he's dead! (+3 generations)
u can feel the emptiness in the sky even😢 right...despite being very colourful it still seems so dull and void
I feel great sympathy for the people who were unfortunate enough to be in North Korea. 😔🤷
North Korean capital although resembling modern skyline, yet it looks so soulless, so lifeless....
It gives me chills...
Five hour trip on an empty street is impossible... try this trip in europe and you REALLY need five hours
Is the backsound Balinese music?
Great documentary 🙌🏼
I’m very glad this was a unit in my 8th grade World studies class (I’m in high school now) as there is the side the government wants you to see, an underrated country but what lies underneath is hell
Hmmm you should the translations is right?
Funny how as soon as they escape they have nothing good to say about the dear leader they've been raised to love. It's all an act, they are terrified
Beautiful and yet so sad ❤
Thank you
Welcome. 😂
By far one of the best documentaries on North Side.
Watch “the children of a secret state.”
2:20 That is a lie! United States of America (USA) did not start the Korean War. North Korea started the Korean War on the 25th June 1950 because North Korea invaded South Korea and ceased after an armistice on the 27th of July 1953.
Amazing
The documentary was simultaneously honest and compelling _(all within the parameters of their government)._ If Kim Jong Un hoped we'd find affection and admiration for North Koreans, he got what he wanted; if CNN hoped to reveal new things about North Korea, it also won. There's a reason Kim Jong Un allows this journalist to keep returning. This report _(or story)_ from Will Ripley is among CNN's best work.
Well deduced!
Free propaganda boost is what you're saying.
Dang. This is from 2018. I was hoping this was recent. 😤
generally not a fan of CNN but this was actually something id tune in for if there is more content like this
00:58 why tf are there two different original air dates on screen?? lol
We all live with propaganda everyday, it is just we are free to follow the propaganda we choose to follow. Some choose right others left and those in the middle see the propaganda of both sides.
It's amazing yet strange how they let him into the country without any trouble.
Not strange at all, What they want us to know they will allow
becuase western medias are lier
It's not amazing. They only use him as a tool for communist propaganda. He didn't even suspect that he was played like a fool.
That's to show that your western government is telling you lies. 👽👽👽
This was before there was any restrictions and they let him see what they want him to see
Ripley did you see the TCOTNKTP? I know you did. Great plane for you to get a return ✈️
Does any north korean dare to say anything else even if they want to?
Multiple people answers with their face turned or with a side eye, body language kinda says it all. Especially when they're asked about watching American media/entertainment.
Great documentary, watching from Kenya
North Korea is actually just like any other countries around the world. They actually have hopes, dreams, emotions ,etc but still they're actually living in a different and also ruthless police state.
