I lived in North Carolina for about 2 years… more than 20 years ago. I was 18 when I moved there. My southern twang still comes out sometimes. I don’t think he’s doing it on purpose at all!! I didn’t HAVE to talk like anyone but my normal voice, but still picked up that twang. I also lived in Japan for a year and a half (right after NC) and I will have a totally Asian type accent, depending on what word I say. Not on purpose, just because of how I heard it and was immersed in it for a period of my life.
Whether he even realized it. He actually responded to these questions in the same manner as Elvis would have. So amazing. He even showed humble ways like Elvis would have. This guy will go places.

I once did a play as a character with a stutter and after we were done with the show people commented that I hadn’t shaken the stutter off. Shaking character voices and quirks is difficult when you do them so long.

He is my exact age and I had a similar voice to him prior to his Elvis role and my voice is nowhere near as deep as this, even with years of drinking and smoking I put into it. His voice is not a normal aging thing. Whether he is legitimately stuck with this voice from a couple years of training it, or he is doing it deliberately, no matter which way you swing it: this is a voice he created, and isn’t something that naturally happened.
If he can do the work to face an accent then he can do the work to get his accent back. The man is just riding the one thing making him relevant right now
Y'aint foolin'! I can't get shed o' mine no matter how hard I try. I don't usually write like Mark Twain in Huckleberry Finn but it's difficult to transliterate the speaking voice onto paper. I speak 'southern' fluently, but it still takes me an incredibly long time to read anything written in southern slang. I have difficulty explaining to people "from my eyes (reading) to my brain, there's no issue with proper English. I read and understand it well. It's when it goes from my brain to my mouth, that we encounter a problem, Houston." 😂

When you train to become someone for 3 years and that is your ONLY focus, it becomes difficult to turn that off because it becomes a part of you and your DNA like he said.
