    During one of his heckler skits, Jimmy said that the best heckle he ever got was when someone yelled out, "My mother died of cancer!". Jimmie looked baffled, so he asked the guy..."Your mother died of cancer?" And the heckler said, "Yeah, and watching her die was funnier than you."

    Saying 'Posh twat' is like when someone from the streets doesnt identify with, say, a rich banker, they might point out how the banker is uncool, unconnected with the people. It's something like that.

    BTW 'posh' comes from an acronym Port side Out, Starboard side Home. This comes from the early day of ocean liners as these were the cabins on the shaded side of the ship when travelling to and from India. The wealthy passengers would reserve these cabins and their luggage would be tagged P.O.S.H. So posh became a synonym for rich / well to do.

      I was told this many decades ago but I was told it was so the rich could see land for longer on both outward and inward journey. Surely the shaded side of an ocean liner would vary depending what time of day it is? In other words, as the liner set sail then if the port side is facing east then the Sun would shine on that side in the morning and not in the evening, when the starboard side would have the sunshine.

    posh is what we call rich, upper class people. it comes from back when rich people cruised around the world on those big ocean going liners. the Toffs (rich folk) would have two cabins, one on the Port side for the outward journey and on the Starboard side for the return journey. This was known as Port Out Starboard Home and they were said to be travelling P.O.S.H

  • @gnomadD_
    @gnomadD_ Před rokem

    5:55 In terms of "Posh Twat", "Posh" does indeed roughly equate to "bougie" but also has connotations of aristocracy and very old money (ie families that had been rich for centuries, some even from before anyone even knew the American continent existed). It tends to be used as an insult towards people who aren't born upper class but cravenly aspire to join that social class and adopt the aesthetics of it, especially an upper class sounding accent.
    "Twat" on the other hand is slang for female anatomy if you catch my drift. Pretty self explanatory that one 😉😝

  • @adamskeans2515
    @adamskeans2515 Před rokem

    The word posh is British slang for something or someone rich, expensive, high class. The popular belief is that the term originated in the 1800s when Britain ruled India and there common voyages by boat to India, where in the best cabins, the ones with the best view and less sunlight coming thru the window where on the port side of the boat going there and on the starboard side of the boat coming home, port out starboard home, i.e. posh. However there is little evidence for this theory being true. Many linguists believe that the term first made it into the English language as a borrowed word from the English Romani posh-horri, which meant halfpennies and was referred to a rich dandy, ostensibly because such a person would naturally have a lot of coins on them, and then later got turned into an adjective referring to anyone or thing rich, expensive or high class.

    The word posh comes from Port out Starboard home. The P. & O. route went through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. The cabins on the port side on the way to India got the morning sun and had the rest of the day to cool off, while starboard ones got the afternoon sun, and were still quite hot at bedtime. On the return trip, the opposite was true. The cooler cabins, therefore, were the more desirable and were reserved for the most important and richest travellers.

    POSH started out as P.O.S.H. which stood for Port Out, Starboard Home, which was the side of the boat facing south on the way from Liverpool UK to New York, and then New York back to Liverpool. These were the more desirable cabins and so were more expensive, and POSH people could afford them.

    European comedy is usually pretty brutal towards audience members. A lot of interactive heckling. You should give Frankie Boyle a try. His accent is a bit thick, so you might need subtitles.

    Literally, "Posh" means elegant or upper class, but it's sort of equivalent to saying someone is old money. Being rich is a good thing, but ACTING rich or entitled isn't. Saying that someone looks posh is a comment on their manners and presentation, not their actual wealth or class. Plus, in this case the insult "posh twat" is basically equivalent to "rich prick". Posh/ rich is not the significant word.

    If you love British humor - here's a bunch of one-liners and zingers from my favorite British quiz show, QI (stands for Quite Interesting). It's a trivia show with all comedians. And it's where I first saw Jimmy Carr (he's in some of these clips). czcams.com/video/1ICUGpQ4L6Q/video.html (there are some cultural references that'll be over American's heads, but most are great). And here are some Jimmy Carr on QI clips! czcams.com/video/LJ35lX-5-i8/video.html
