My theory on Little Mac is that he is not actually mental, but instead imagines his opponents as extremely comical and stereotypical versions of themselves in his mind in order to exploit their weaknesses. He just has a thought process in his head when facing an opponent. He makes the opponents extremely comical to calm himself down and lighten up, and then looks at any flaws in their fighting style, exaggerates it in his head, and then uses that to beat his opponent. Glad I got to share my theory!
It's pretty common for people to exaggerate others in various ways in order to 'break down' what they do.
It's likely that Honda's tells weren't that obvious, but Mac noticed it passingly, but when he did notice it, he was unable to NOT see it, and his mind played it up into a vastly easier way for him to recognize and know how to deal with it.
While things don't actually slow down time, your perception of time is dependent entirely on how many details you take in and how fast your synapses are responding to that information in 3 second bursts.
Say you're just sitting on the couch and absent mindlessly watching a TV show, because you aren't actively taking in details and getting stimulation, time seems to go by faster.
However, if you're in an environment and you're making an actual effort to soak in as much as you can about your environment, such as how many people there are, what they're wearing, the light, the shadows, your perception is that time was slowed down.
So when Mac noticed what was very likely a small detail, he paid attention to it, he trained his eye on his enemy, watching their muscles tense and release, watching the beads of sweat go down his forehead, and because of this, his eyebrow tell became greatly exaggerated, it was impossible for Mac to not notice it and he realized how he could exploit it.
I imagine this is pretty much how most of his fights go. :P

Sandman has a rather silly face to me.
But personally I don't think he tries to turn his enemies into comical spectacles, I think he just mentally exaggerates any tells they have by taking in as many details that he can, thus 'slowing' them down and making it easier to exploit any weaknesses they have.
Plus, it's actually a good thing he's smaller.
Most people are trained to fight people the same basic height that they are, so by fighting a smaller person, they're thrown off, whereas Mac was always little, he is very good at darting about and avoiding the larger and more burly enemies, but they have little to no experience with smaller people.
This would give him more time to get to know their tells as they tried to adjust to fight a smaller person, but it's difficult to learn an entirely new way of fighting on the fly, whereas Mac had years of experience fighting much larger enemies, which will give him an undeniable edge.
But even if Mac was put up against someone smaller than himself, he could quickly adapt because he knows exactly how they try to fight larger enemies and likely have developed strategies to counter them himself.
Now THAT theory is a good deal more plausible, like the whole thing of "If you're nervous when making a speech, imagine your audience in their underpants" or something like that. I mean, with the Japanese guy (Honda, is it?), unless he's just a really anxious guy with a facial twitching/tic problem, why would he raise his eyebrows when he's going to hit someone? It's EXAGGERATED, which is the point.
So, essentially, Little Mac may just be a highly perceptive boxer who has adapted to overcome his physical disadvantage of often being much shorter and skinnier than his opponents by focusing on THEIR details and wide-open spots. Not that he's apparently a depressed schizophrenic suffering from OCD, ADHD, narcissism, eating disorders, and anything else an armchair psychologist can mis-diagnose a person as into the 17-minute video from the DSM-V manual. He doesn't actually SHOW any of these symptoms, because he's a blank slate for the player to project themselves onto (which also might be why we're shown fighting these guys from a first-person perspective, as if we actually ARE Mac).
But it's just a theory... a GAME theory!! Thanks for reading! :D

I agree that the fighters probably aren't that extreme, but why do they have to represent mental disorders? Couldn't they just be Little Mac psyching himself up and making-note-of/blowing-up their faults and weaknesses so to better abuse them? Little Mac is winning these fights because he makes himself constantly aware of their little tells and faults by coloring them more dramatic in his mind. He also turns up their individual attributes so as to belittle them, making them less intimidating and more oafish compared to himself.

Well think to yourself; does this guy use solid proof? No. Does MatPat do lots of research and find true, solid proof? Yes, he does.

I can understand Little Mac's supposed healing factor and his heroic will in which he keeps himself from being knocked down barely preventing a knockdown being mental toughness. But what about the physical abilities like him being able to punch so fast his hands are a blur, his natural speed and reflexes I mean he's able to dodge and react to Piston Hondo who was able to outrun bullet trains as well as dodge and react to Great Tiger's teleportation attacks, his strength he's able injure even knock out opponents who are twice his size, his endurance is incredible I mean he's able to take some punches from guys like Mr. Sandman who demolished a building with a few bare handed punches after losing to Little Mac and punches from Donkey Kong, and let's not forget his vision cause according to canon of Punch Out his main tactic is spot and exploit weak spots and this should be hard to on a moving opponent yet Little Mac somehow has the eye sight of a raptor(bird of prey). Can someone please explain his seemingly superhuman physical attributes.

- Character is actually dead / hallucinating / autistic (gotta love ableism)
- Reason: Things look surreal and character gets hit at some point.
- Often overlooked: Videogames are usually surreal and VG characters usually get hit.
- Often overlooked: This theory is worthless because it can be applied to anything.
Elements of every "let's calculate physics" theory video ever:
- Obviously wrong height found in very obscure manner.
- Earth air friction and gravity used in games where jumping 20 feet is normal.
- Magic or machinery explained away as "fire caused by air friction", even if said fire is shaped in the form of a Falcon and starts forming long before the actual attack YES I'M TALKING ABOUT THE FALCON PUNCH VIDEO.
General elements of CZcams theories:
- Great video editing skills which makes the presentation more professional. A very big plus, not to mention a catchy intro tune and overall pleasing voiceover. Matpat is distinctly worse than Gnoggin in this regard.
- Isolated videos with no good way to debunk theories because video replies take forever.
- A large horde of fans who share the video without being skeptical of it first
- A large horde of fans who parrot the video and try to pass it off as their own theory (the Zelda Universe forums were a nightmare after the Link is Dead theory)
- LARGE STRETCHES.

This is well thought-out, and while I certainly think it's looking a bit too deep, it's not doing so in a bad way. You aren't saying this guy's a bastard, you're reinforcing that Little Mac is someone we should strive to be: Strong enough in body and mind to fight mental problems and recover.

Even ignoring Samus’ heels or power armor, she’s still _Amazonian_ in hight! At or near 6 feet! Thus leading to a more extreme “Tol/Smol” ship (where one individual in the pairing is significantly taller than the other. In Samus and Mac’s case, they’re both non-average heights, leading to the more extreme case of Tol/Smol).
Fun Fact 3: The rather obvious WFT(F) Ship Reasoning.
WFT(F) is a flexible, athletic woman...ish...thing (is she even an actual human??). Thus, getting paired with a champion boxer makes sense. More sense than Villager or the Miis, or something.

Isn't this a bit too far-fetched? I mean, in that term, Mario is just trans-sexual (represented by Peach) and fights his super-ego (Bowser) , not allowing him to live freely because of overly-strict parental values, over and over again to achieve self acceptance. While doing this, he faces hard times, doing mushrooms, thus suffering from hallucinations (Boo-Hoos, Koopa Troopas, etc.) but still continues his fight for self acceptance til he eventually defeats his super-ego in a last standing and accepts his trans-sexuality. Time flies by and Mario again is having complexes, maybe because of an unfulfilled love (He is inside Luigi's Bro-zone which is why they are depicted as brothers), beginning again by World 1-1.
It's pretty easy to make this stuff up. A week of writing and a bit of Wikipedia research and I can make my own theories.
It is, not to do injustice, still a well-done and interesting episode, just too loose explained and a too abstract idea in my opinion.

I believe when coming up with a theory about a game, you got to think if the creators will really create a game with your theory. I don’t think Nintendo will make a game about a kid fighting depression. It is possible, but I think it is just a boxing game, nothing more.

Kind of a good point. Knew a guy who failed a fitness exam because he was "overweight" for his hight. Not an ounce of fat on him though. Just ripped. Anyways, he was probably just a bit over 5' and no way was he under 107lb.

I don't really care what people say, this is an interesting theory. And it's true about what people everywhere. We all face issues in our lives and have to overcome them and what you basically explain is that Little Mac is no different from all of us. I like it.

3:12 Ironically, I think WiiFit Trainer and Princess Peach would love Mac despite his height. WiiFit Trainer would be impressed by how strong and athletic he is and Princess Peach cannonically dates a man who's shorter than her (so Peach's love of Mac would have to be platonic).
