While the phone is not really waterproof that term has become almost interchangeable with the correct one which is water resistant. If you want your phone to be "like" new after it has been repaired you should always replace this front assembly adhesive.
iPhones has become slightly more complicated when it comes to replacing a broken screen. The main differences are the additional of yet another proprietary screw, the Y000 Tri-lobe used on the inside and the addition of a water resistant adhesive that holds the front display assembly in place. On top of that the cables are thinner and more fragile than ever before so while this can be a DIY repair it may be better to seek professional help if you don't already have plenty of iPhone repair experience.
This model opens from the side similar to the iPhone 7. There are several clips at the upper end of the screen though so it must be slid down a bit before you can open the screen up.
The connectors are also very fragile so care must be taken when unplugging or connecting them. They bend easily too so you have to be sure that even pressure is applied since pushing on just the center can cause them to warp. If the front facing camera flex cable is plugged in upside down you may end up with post repair complications so it is important to note the orientation of this cable during disassembly. The home button is another troubling factor as damaging the secure enclave or anything attached to it may render Touch ID inoperable and this is not a component that can be replaced by third parties in order to restore functionality.
After market LCDs for the iPhone 8 Plus are now available and for most consumers make are a good option if they wish to save some money or expect the screen to be broken again in the near future. It is also possible to acquire OEM replacement screens although they will cost more and in most cases are actually fitted with after market glass. Tempered glass is always a good investment and can restore that "smooth" feel in the cases where an after market screen replacement part lacks an oleophobic coating.
This video was recorded using an iPhone 7 and the Andonstar ADSM302 Digital HDMI microscope available here ebay.to/2FR6egm (affiliate).
Note that while it is often considered best practice to use an ESD safe pry tool when performing an iPhone 8 screen replacement we opted for precision tweezers this time to demonstrate how easy it is to damage components when prying with a plastic tool or fingernail. Given the level of precision required to replace an iPhone 8 display it this should not be a concern for capable parties. Just be sure to always carefully disconnect the battery first and watch out for small components in close proximity to the connectors.

There are a lot of good tutorials that I looked through, yours by far is the best and most comprehensive. I like how you give little tips along the way, great video angles and everything. I successfully replaced a screen on my daughter's iPhone 8 Plus and everything works perfect (so far) thanks to this tutorial! I still don't understand why everything can't be Philips head- but that's Apple for you! I'm 56 and at my age definitely need magnification with these tiny screws. I think the hardest part for me had to deal with the camera/speaker/sensor assembly removing, then wrapping to back up to fit on the new screen- but your video was super clear about how to do that where others did not have that detail. Thanks again!

you shouldn't use metal when disconnecting the connections... especially for the battery. it can fry the battery

I wish I would have watched this first! I watch another short vid from another guy and I rushed the disassembly... you’re video helped me get it all back together with the new screen. It all works great except there is no sound out of the earpiece on phone calls. I think I may have damaged the cable when I was taking it apart. Apparently it’s a fairly common issue. Thanks again for the vid!

Wish I had watched this video instead of the quick one supplied by company of the aftermarket screen I purchased! Didn't know about the hooks at the top (cracked mine off). Then I Used metal tweezers to remove the home button and forced it a bit too much and lightly tore that cable. Now button and touch ID don't work.
    Great detailed video BTW!

Wait so those adhesives are for water resistancy? I've been told they are just adhesive and specifically that they don't provide water resistancy.

Home button: about 10 seconds of heat gun on low.....hold about 6" away, moving in a circle. you can now carefully and slowly
scrape under the flex and pry up
