    do they really open the bridge twice daily?

      The bridge opens for two reasons. Firstly, if a vessel that can not fit under the roadway needs to pass through. Secondly, as a maintenance activity. The bridge could, in theory, open several times a day but rarely does, and it may go for days without opening. It depends upon the requirements of the river traffic.

      @@PLuMUK54 In the late 60's and the Pool of London still had working wharfs it was only raised about 4 times daily and caused traffic chaos for hours each time. The 10 minutes or so the traffic gates were closed caused tailbacks for miles either side.
