This is the OST to Akumajou Densetsu for the Famicom! But in my own form of Stereo! Which spreads the sound channels and adds a bit of echo/reverb. These mixes also do not represent true, original, or actual stereo that the NES has, this is just to make the music sound more clear and crisp, and is another way of listening to the greatness of 8Bit music. So enjoy this soundtrack in what I like to call, WiiGuy's 8Bit Stereo!! :D

      this is quite a statement.
and while listening, tough to find a conclusion to anything else standing up to it in terms of superiority..
but dammnid, think you are right! only things that come to mind are the smash-hit celebrated, obvi choices, but in terms of dynamix, just do not really hold to the same lvl of quality, progressions, modulating arpeggiations..
the konami drum kit was always top tier, and this cart has such thumpin' bass, driving the song and the play.

Woooof, tough call there! Certainly a contender. Some of the Megaman soundtracks come to mind, as do some more esoteric ones. Like I love the Startropics soundtrack so much... and the Ninja Gaiden soundtrack. I'll have to think more on this....

CV3 version soundtrack will always be my favorite, in part because the simplified instrumentation resulted in a more urgent, plaintive sound that for many tracks creates an intensity the more sophisticated Akumajou Densetsu orchestration sometimes lacks. However, the Akumajou version is still an incredible masterpiece. Box art tho...

Agreed. As Retronauts put it in a recent episode on Castlevania 3's music, the soundtrack sounds like your classic chiptune on the NES, but the Famicom was mixing channels to try creating specific instruments like the harpsichord in some spots. In terms of technical execution, the Famicom is vastly superior.
However, I grew up with Castlevania 3 being one of my favorite games that I went back to regularly, so nostalgia wins in my book. For example, I like "Dead Beat" and "Rising" on the NES much more than the Famicom.

That weapon has a pretty limited use but it's absolutely awesome in some fights. In the past games I've always partnered with Sypha or Alucard because they were cooler. Grant is the best choice after all-- great for skipping some messed up areas as well. Oh, and the soundtrack? Can't get enough of it.

I like the sound of the triangle wave myself more than the sawtooth. In fact, listening to this on max volume and it sounds really messy and not-clear unlike the stock 2A03. Additionally, I believe the stock 5 channels are enough for a composer who knows what he's doing, and expanded audio just makes the video of the game look even more primitive by comparison. However, extra sound channels would be useful for sound effects and the like.

Super Castlevania IV didn't offer much in the terms of challenge but the gameplay, presentation and the music are great. One of a kind stuff.

Hmm. Yeah, that's basically the conclusion I came to as well: Use triangle for low- to mid-frequency thumping sounds and such. I was having trouble making percussion tracks with just noise and no DPCM, and I was tired of trying to make triangle work in melodic/harmonic roles.

The triangle can work if you put some elbow grease into it. While rare, there are some games that use a Square+Triangle lead, such as Boy and his Blob, or some people like Hubbard use the triangle as a leading channel and use a square as a bass. I don't think Japanese composers did much with leading triangles, much less triangle harmonies.
It might be pretty underwhelming, but it sure was quite a versatile tool. I'm impressed with how loud Baldwin's basslines are, considering the triangle.

Excuse me. Did I claim to be an expert on NES audio? I merely mentioned that I've worked with it enough to identify what works and what sounds good based on my musical sense. I mostly do "demakes of VGM; I can send you a .nsf and maybe you can judge what my opinion is worth from that?
I don't object to the timbre of the triangle so much as I despise the lack of control over it. You have to mess with the DPCM counter to get it soft enough for mellow passages, and even then it sticks out.

while Bloody Tears is probably the greatest piece of Castlevania music ever written (though shoutout goes to the Waterfalls of Agartha from Lords of Shadow, believe it or not) Castlevania 3 probably had the overall most impressive soundtrack.

That song at 1:54 is so good. If the NES used the VRC6 chip for every soundtrack, that would be so awesome, BTW just a question, is it possible to do stereo soundtracks for other platforms other than NES or FC? I'm just curious.

Actually, there is the Kirby Ultra Super Deluxe CD, but it's more of a "greatest hits" than a full OST release of the Kirby Super Star Ultra (which would probably take up 3 CDS); but on the bright side, the tracks sound like 8BitStereo tracks!

  • @LuwiigiMaster
    @LuwiigiMaster Před 11 lety +1

While the Famicom version sounds fantastic, it just sounds WAY too convoluted with 4 square waves, one triangle (which is absent apparently) and one sawtooth. I'd agree with just the addition of the Sawtooth, which is a versatile instrument, but 2 more squares are kinda overkill.

  • @AlluMan96

It's funny you mention that. Ever since Capcom went down the shitter, I started thinking.
The 10 million versions of SF 2, Capcom fucking over the original visions of not just Keji inafune with the Megaman X series, but also Shinji mikami with the Resident evil series (Was suppoest to end at 3 originally), Ghouls & ghost's very structure of repearting the gane twice, the list goes on.
Capcom was always a crooked & manipulative company, it's just that back then developers had more power.
