Empty streets of Amsterdam - Coronavirus Covid-19 in the Netherlands

  • Large parts of the world are currently affected by the novel coronavirus Covid-19 outbreak that originated in China. Citizens of many nations are under (partial) lockdown and self imposed or mandatory quarantine. Governments across the globe take extreme measures to minimize the impact of this global pandemic.
    Although the Dutch government has not imposed an obligatory lockdown (as of 28 March 2020), they urge citizens to stay home as much as possible. These images show a glimpse into how daily life has come to a standstill in central Amsterdam, the Netherlands. They were shot in the morning of March 23 as part of my work.
    Please be very careful in your daily routine and follow advice from your respective governments and medical institutions.

    I am in Saigon now, I am Dutch here it is no different. Yesterday I went walking to the main points of interest here in the city. And I was often alone, if I see Amsterdam I wished I was there with the always busy vibe it normally has... miss that..

    I like my city, now you finally can see the real beauty of Amsterdam, without the masses of tourists. We - all real Amsterdammers - left Amsterdam, because Amsterdam was not anymore for Amsterdammers but for tourists. Born and raised in Amsterdam...

    • @stefhoffer
      @stefhoffer  Před 4 lety

      Yep, except that daily life has also shut down. And smaller numbers of tourists still add to the atmosphere I think. But in recent years it got out of hand.

      @@stefhoffer Where are you from ?? Well out of hand, oh yes. When you must speak English in a shop, for example, to buy shoes, then it is way out of control. Speaking English in my home country, because that is the most spoken language in Amsterdam, that is more than out of control. All the Nutella shops, waffles and go on. Oh, man, I loved my city so much when I grew up. Now, you can not even enter a museum, and that in your own country... Working-class neighborhoods are gone because of the workers and the tourists ?? God forbid that... See what happened in the Pijp... Every worker must be moved out, the houses got expensive house makeovers and sold out to rich people from all over the country and world.. Not my Amsterdam anymore...

      @@ninalisa2303 Yes, it's not only in the center but also in other parts of the city (and beyond). I would have been in favor of a maximum quota of tourists to curb the effect. Now it remains to be seen how tourism will pick up again in the future... I'm from Zaandam, so basically also a visitor when I come to Amsterdam :)

    I am avoiding contagion as best I can. I must say that it is hard to believe the outcome will be as dire as the forecasts...but ever since a few years ago when I got a case of strep throat that wouldn't allow me to swallow for days because of the pain, I have had a healthy respect for the killer might of these rogue viruses. They really know how to hurt a guy.

    I never seen the streets get cleaned or the playground.. I mean Dutch take it so lightly.. I live here , I stay in and go at work and if necessary at the supermarket. But I didn't celebrate my son's birthday, I didn't bbq , I didn't play with my kids in the outdoors because they are too many people outside and as I said playground do not get cleaned up ever!!

    • @dutchman7623
      @dutchman7623 Před 4 lety

      Cleaning up a playground is of no use.
      To kill the virus you need aggressive stuff, and nobody wants their kids in contact with that.
      After disinfection it only takes one kid or parent to contaminate everything again.
      It is called false security.
      So simply stay away.
      Playgrounds are cleaned on regular scheme, but you cannot fight all bacteria or viruses, teach your kids normal hygiene like hands washing and face washing with cleaned hands after school or playground, as you should have taught them before the epidemy.

      @oanaradu2041 Před 4 lety

      @@dutchman7623 they never cleaned up anything , before this even happened, I don't let my kids out , we do stay home and if we do go out we go for a walk and no touching stuff . It's not for my kids , it's more for the kids who do play outside . So no offense but Dutch take it to lightly this whole situation
