For a car from 2008 these look so far ahead of there time! Such attractive cars
Absolutely
I own an '09 A5 S-Line, which means it looks like this, but with body-colored mirrors, and has an improved suspension over the standard A5. This was from when they still put the 3.2 V6 in them, and mine has a six-speed manual. It's not as fast as the S5, obviously, but I think I can safely say a few things about these cars in general.
First, none of them are really meant to be 0-60mph, or 0-100kph, champions. That just isn't the point of these cars. What they do VERY well is drive at high speeds once you get there. It's incredible how composed these cars are at speeds that definitely nobody is reaching except on race tracks...... But, really... you're not asking much of an Audi to cruise at 110mph.
Another thing? The interior really is so damn nice. This is my second Audi. After my first, I thought I could stand to not own another. But they are built so nicely it's really hard to not have one once you have. The tech is old, sure, but it feels so good to sit in this car. All of the controls are in good locations, and mine, at least, feels damn near like it's new with almost 175,000 miles on it.
Finally, the looks... This review was right. These are beautiful cars. I have people comment on mine all the time, while they don't look twice at my 2023 Subaru. The Subaru is worh more, has better technology, and really is a plenty nice vehicle on its own. But these Audi coupes are rolling artwork, and people love them. I prefer the B8/B8.5 models over the newer ones, too. I feel like they are more understated, more professional. They don't look like they're trying to get attention, they just get it because they deserve it.
Edit: Since I've seen maintenance concerns mentioned everywhere in the comments, I'm going to say that I spent more on repair bills on my last pickup truck than either my previous A6, or my current A5.
Had one of these with a manual box, payed £8k in the UK in 2019. Fantastic car.
Best impulse buy I've ever made, I hav the manual 30g 90000k 2yr ago
Yes bro. Love these. Any chance at look at an a5 3.0TDI
Owned a 2008 auto and loved it. Wanted a manual but they were priced minimum 8k higher when I purchased. Sounded absolutely amazing with just a rear muffler delete. Fuel consumption 22/litre, weight and super heavy front end ended up making me sell. Would own one again in the future as a comfortable cruiser.
Cheers for the feedback definitely a great cruiser! Beautiful design and sound 👌
22/100 but i quess pucnhing it everytime haha i heard that you can go 16 with it
@@kyriekiller2779 16 around town is definitely possible if you leave it in auto and never punch it. Highways mine typically sat around 9/100 which isn't terrible
@@popularpages I absolutely agree, neither my RS5 V8 nor my S5 V8 needed more than 10.5 on the autobahn at 130 km/h. Meanwhile my S4 3.0 TFSI needs AT LEAST 13.3L on the autobahn no matter how slow and careful you drive. I can punch the V8 every day and you wont see more than 14L on the Autobahn. I had both better fuel consumption in traffic AND autobahn on the V8s than on the V6 Superchargeds.
Man, I missed this review. My interest is definitely peaked. Love your work bro.
Why do I want all these Cars your driving lately. Thanks JR keep em coming ...
🤣 I want them all too
Nextride are the MVPs. They have been providing you with so many great cars to review!
I have been living there it seems for the past few months.. true legends who support the channel!
Got a 2009 s5 6 speed v8 at the end of 2022, BEST car ive owned so far and I recently stuck a supercharger on it, its absolutely insane
awesome stuff mate!
How hp and name of supercharger and price pls. Ty
@@gupallday4483haven't found an AWD dyno around my town so I can't give any exact numbers but I'd say it's close or just over 600hp. It's the VPS Whipple kit for the rs5 and it works on the S5 with no issues, and It's made to order. $11-13k for it and that doesn't include your blood sweat and tears lol it's really worth it though
VPS supercharger right?
@@esthetics4512 the addict motorsport design kit with a tvs 1900
The main thing to look out for is the timing chain guides! Despite being an update from the infamous b7 s4 chain guides they still can bring issues and a hefty bill as it's an engine out job. Plenty of people have gone 200k kms+ with no chain issues while others have had them as early as 100k kms. Always make sure it has a good service history and be vigilant of the chain guides. This gen of 8T/B8 S5 is beautiful and I'd love to own one eventually, I currently have a fully optioned 2015 a5 coupe with the ea888.3 4pot and its damn good looking, I've got these exact s5 wheels on it.
Cheers for that info! Definitely something to look out for when buying
Suppose to change them when you change the water pumps also
Love it,
Some of your best work mate
Thanks John!
I OWNED ONE BACK IN 2016 V8 MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND IT WAS A CRAZY EXPERIENCE ! 👏👏👏👏
nice one
Hey, Ross, I have to say, this is one of my fav reviews from RR. I own a 2008 S4 Quatro V8. Black interior. And mine sounds just like that.
I love the way the Audi drives. I have an FG XR8 and a 2010 commodore, and I'd take the Audi for a drive over the other 2 any day of the week.
Thanks for the review, Ross.
Glad you enjoyed it mate! The S4 must be great also! Love the motor in these 👌 beautiful cars.. how’s your maintenance been?
@@RossReviewsau Yeah, hey, Ross. I've had mine almost 3 years, so not long. I spent $600 or so putting a new set of mufflers, she sound amazing. I replaced a coil pack myself. New battery. But that's it for maintenance. I've always done mechanical repairs myself, but I'm 62 now, and it's not fun anymore. LOL. She's got 124,000 on the clock, and as far as I can figure she's never had the timing chain replaced. So, I'll have to get that done (Between $6,000 $7,000) Not cheap.
I paid under $18,000 for mine, in mint condition, but I'll be looking for $35,000 when I sell her.
Audi's are just so damn nice to drive, and so much fun, she's going to be tough to part with. Maybe I'll supercharge her and hang on to her. I figure she'll keep going up in price.
Cheers and all the best, mate.
i have a s5 v8 2011, blue with black interior! you are spot on! God i love this car! Im at 60.000km now:D
zerro problems in 12.000 km
great to hear mate! amazing machines
Absolutely love them
Really looking forward to this Ross Reviews. Please make sure you bring out the 40K celebration 🎉 and the 20’000 Kilometre VE SS really soon’ thank you.
To Ross Reviews
From Jordan’s car reviews
He did have a clip of a blue VE2 SS, I don't know if that's what you're referring to...
Cheers jordan!
These things got hit the hardest with covid tax. They where $30,000-$40,000 here in Canada a year ago and now they are $15,000 for one with very low KM Or mileage. Now that things with covid cooled down so did the price… big time. Idk what u taking about
Beautiful car, I have the 2012 A5 coupe and I love it but I really wish I had bought the manual S5 to enjoy that amazing V8 engine
Manual would be best but kinda rare
Germans know how to put that power down and go you have that sense of security,Falcons Commodores great for doing wheel spin and trying to kill you but you still love them😂
🤣 that’s very true! I reckon if these were RWD Aussies would have loved them a lot more 🇦🇺🇲🇽
I just got done essentially saying this in my own post. These cars aren't built to win drag races. They're built to let you drive with absolute peace of mind at some very high speeds for as long as you'd like to do so.
Hadn’t seen one of these in a while. After watching your vid this morning I hit the road and within 15 mins was sat next to a white one at the lights also with some exhaust mods. He saw me keen to hear it rev and absolutely sent it and geeze it was a glorious sound. Awesome vid as always Ross!
Cheers! They sound amazing
Very nice bro. Try to review the a5 3.0tdi
Cheers bro I’ll keep an eye out for one
i have a black one in Manual and it is absolutely amazing
That’s what you want
Awesome video
Thanks mate!
Awesome review! I drove one of there before buying the RS5 and it’s just as fun. The RS5 only feels better when you’re absolutely ripping its neck out to 8500 rpm and the DSG is more crisp and engaging. From memory the S5 has more torque and develops it at lower rpm so it felt better to drive on the road. You have to push the RS5 to get the best out of it.
Cheers Oli hope your doing well mate! I really enjoyed this car! Not quite as much as yours of course 🤣 but man this in a manual would be something special 👏
These are beautiful cars, and the design has aged so well, it looks like the new Audi's if you don't pay attention... Though some of the things that may go wrong scare me, like the timing chains which are on the back of the engine, especially if it's poorly maintained... Great review 👍
For 2008 it’s a bloody space ship so ahead of its time.. but yes finding a well maintained one with good service is key! N you need some cash or a good warranty to make sure your covered if something does go wrong.. but for 30k man it’s good!
Mate of mine bought a small 10 year old Audi for about $12k, probably an A3 not sure. Timing chain snapped and he’s up for a $6k bill.
@@shanecameron7869 R.I.P
Timing chain issues are only a problem on the b7 gen v8s not the updated b8 version
@@draggy6544 Aren't they still on the back of the engine in the B8?
Owning 2009, installed retrofit CarPlay and it's just awesome GT car, maybe one little thing is missing - fully open hatch
I've had a few Audi's. Great cars just a bit needy. Ross to engage launch control put the trans in s mode and hold the stability button for 5 seconds and launch control activation comes up. Then you can launch of at 5k rpm. That'll get the 0-100 in 5 seconds. These are great V8s but I do enjoy the lazy torque in my tuned VE SS. Maybe I'm getting old lol. Great review mate. Cheers
Damn! I tried looking that up and no one told me how to launch it! I knew there had to be away it’s a shame they didn’t make it easier to launch
@@RossReviewsau Yeah they didn't really advertise it at the time. Not sure why. I use to live in WA. Great place, I miss the summers. I'm on the Gold coast now. Your vids look like they are done in Swan Valley?
Launch Control is - tunr traction control off go into Sport/manual hold brake down and hit the Accelerator. should allow you to build Revs like my Mk6R
Had a black on cream A5 coupe with the V6 3.2 and optional 19's beautiful car with a little less weight over the front end compared to the V8 and still a great GT .
Interesting I’ll have to test one
@@RossReviewsau once my 2005 R53 Mini Cooper S is finished you might enjoy reviewing that.. it's kinda got the works and just waiting on the new Harrop Supercharger and ecu...I think you would enjoy a blast through the hills.
Love these NA V8s! Another great alternative is the Mercedes C207 E550 coupe although it’s not AWD. NA V8 until 2011, in 2012 they went with a bi-turbo V8 (at least here in the US).
Thanks for sharing!
Run away from those unless they have normal suspension the airomatic air suspension on those damn things is a money pit
For a better value v8 I’m happy with my LS1 shift kitted Holden Adventra. I know it’s not as sporty as that Audi but I got to say she’s still a weapon and I love the practicality of her too.
Can’t beat a good old LS1
I currently own a 2008 manual in the UK great cars but make sure you have deep pockets, high fuel costs (obviously) and they are at that age now where things WILL go wrong and when they do some of the bills can be eye watering
How many miles do you get to a tank? I'm really thinking of getting one
@@stevenlonsdale1154 depends on the type of journeys, best I’ve had is 422 miles which was all motorway/dual carriageway. If it’s lots of stop-start city driving you’re looking at half the above amount
I'm looking into converting an s5 to lpg. I've not really seen any of these that have been converted but there is a place near me that say it can be done.
Nice ...the lay out and design they're user friendly the Audi and gòod technology
It’s very ahead of it’s time
Any ideas what brand the exhaust was?
what exhuast system is on this? it sounds great and im looking to install a new exhaust on my B8
WOW What a Noise!
Beast eh
That exhaust isn't stock...
I might need to do something about my own 2008 6MT!! 😆
Just been looking at these around 2008 for 6 grand!
Cheap!
I got one at 3k... But lot of things to get fix...
Yeah why is he saying $25 k
You said to name a comparable car… 2007-2008 Mercedes CLK500. 5.5 V8 285kw around 1650 kg.
Mercedes claimed 0-100 in 5.2 when it was faster because Mercedes didn’t want it compared to the new CLK63. Same AMG body kit, except front bumper, AMG suspension, AMG wheels, Brembo brakes, Best bang for dollar that almost no-one knows about.
Classic Mercedes’ shape that is bound to be a a collectable.
Damn that’s a great competitor I didn’t know about! I’m keen to find one now and show it off!
Yep, nice call, the CLK is a beautiful car. For a V8 GT you could also shop a newer (2010) E500 coupe for around 40k. It's no V8 but I reckon the C350 is a bargain coupe and will match the 2008 S5 for performance and quality. I owned a 2013 C350 and loved it, now I own a 2013 S5 with the supercharged V6 and DSG, the S5 is really a step-up in performance and what it loses in V8 symphony it gains in DSG farts and low down torque, and fuel economy if that's your thing. After driving these its so hard to look at ford's and holdens, the interiors are just horrible, and if I pay 5k for a high maintenance bill then I remember I've saved about 80k on new car cost and get over it.
How would you rate the S5 V8 sgainst Jaguar XKR coupe?
Dayum. Even with all my used car surfing every week over the years, I never realised this was such a bargain. Makes me really wish I was in the market!
Only a bargain due to massive high maintenance costs.
@@MarkSmith455 Oh, good point 👌
It’s a bargain considering they come in manual with such nice design.. yes maintenance you need to be looking out for but if you get a looked after one definitely one to consider
@jx9971 this is not true only when its an engine out issue, i service my own and its quite easy i would say as easy a honda to service.
Great review mate, everything you said made a lot of sense to me. The only car maybe I could think of is a v8 statesman. I don’t understand how the statesman v8 is still so cheap. Considering the majority of statesman were owned by responsible owners and not flogged like the ss
Very hard to find an LS1 statesman that's under 200,000kms but yes great value for money
Cheers Matt! Glad you agreed with the review.. statesman’s are the last cheap Holden V8 for sure! But very difficult to find in good nick these days sadly 🥲
@@RossReviewsau I have one with 102,000 kms in amazing condition with a lumpy cam and tuned to 300kw. Maybe one day when you're in Sydney you can check it out!
Was going to get one of these but honestly the price of fixing anything on these was such a turn off so I went with a ss vf instead 😂
39k for a first gen s5 and it doesn't even have the manual transmission 😅 i mean i get that it's a really good car but at that price tag you can get an 8.5 rs5 with relatively low mileage
So blessed here in New Zealand we can get 2008 S5 Coupes for around $10-14k USD, b8 RS5 for around 30k usd and B8.5 RS5 for 40k usd.
i've found them under 10k in my city!
Jaguar XKR 4.2 or the XL base with the 5.0
Sounds good
Very
These actually didn't continue on that long at all - they only made them for a few years. The facelift (I think it was 2011 or 2012) replaced the V8 with a supercharged V6.
2012 was the last year for the V8..
Was gonna say…. Chopped one of these multiple times in my FG Turbo, the guy was pissed!!!
What size wheels are those and is it lowered? Sits really nice in those side shots
Believe it was lowered I think 19” not sure tho
Hey how about a BMW 6 series??? Coupe or convertible...I have both an S5 and a 645Ci.....awesome cars
260kw is respectable for a 4.2L NA. Holden had 6Ls just hitting that mark at the time. I guess for those happy to keep it basically stock its a decent amount of ponies. Biggest downfall with German is the repair bills. Even doing the work yourself it's expensive for parts and Euro import delivery times can be shocking with automotive. Forget about a mechanic as they see everything Euro as a big bag of gold ingots. Decent price to snag one but you will need a healthy wallet to keep it on the road.
Your right for the 4.2 it goes well! But as always with high end euros you gotta pay to play if something goes wrong 💰 still a decent deal I feel
Awesome until you have to service/replace parts...
Yes that will be expensive if something goes wrong
Mate what app are you using for your drag information? I was looking some up the other day but they were crap. Link bro?

ouch! lol fun cars tho
How many miles does it do to a full tank? Really thinking of getting one of these. They're dirt cheap in the UK at the minute but it's now or never.
Using cruise control at 140 km/h the distance range is about 560-570 Km s with a full tank.
They look good but give me a Barra any day
BEST AUSTRALIAN CLASSIC FUN ENGINE FULL STOP!
I 've had several Barra's and the 5.4 V8 for comparison. Yes I love my current straight 6 e90... Miss that barra engine still 🙂
Can’t go wrong with a Barra
for v8 engines, they all develop excess carbon build up. carbon cleaning is a necessary maintenance that most owners dont do which results to sluggish performance and power loss. its also alot of labor hours to carbon clean. so if you arent capable of doing it yourself, expect a $1000 bill just to clean the intake where the carbon resides. i passed on an 09 s5 6mt with 88k. it was in beautiful condition with a great service history. but its 2023 and the bushings had never been replaced nor did it have any mentions of carbon cleaning done. i didnt want to be the guy stuck with that repair bill.
Got my 2011 S5 for 15k with 98k miles so far I’ve put almost 22k on it since buying it in November 2022. I drive this baby all over the country and it’s AMAZING! 120k miles later and this baby feels like new make sure to maintain correctly if you plan on buying one
What would you consider good maintence besides the obvious oil coolant ??
@@OnlinevF control arms are one to watch out for once you reach the 90-120k mark I had my replaced with upgraded O34 extra stability control arms. Sadly I had to get my Air compressor replaced too but I wouldn’t say that for everyone maybe I was unlucky and had a leaking compressor.

Timing chains is always a pricey job but once done should last the life of the car

How much does it cost to carbon clean these?
No idea
You must be in Australia because those prices are mental 35k in the uk can buy you an good RS5
Yes we are in Australia 🥲
No they are slept on, they are just not worth owning because of maintenance nightmares and horror stories, hence why hsv and fpv’s are a much better choice.
I love my Fpv but these ain’t cheap cars anymore either let’s not forget.. especially Fpv and HSV 🥲
Bro you can get them under 10k! huge value but high service costs so find one thats had the expensive services done i.e carbon cleaning and timing belts
in australia? def high service cost and parts tho
Until something breaks,ur wallet will have holes hahahahah
Warranty warranty warranty.. but yes make sure you don’t buy a lemon 🍋
They are affordable because they are a money pit repair wise. Basic maintenance is criminally priced
Gotta pay to play with almost anything.. but definitely if parts need replacement it’s expensive in a high end German
lol just got mine couple of weeks ago
How good eh
Like 7k in the uk 😅
Welcome to Australia 🥲
One of the biggest reasons these are a bit cheaper is because of the outlay later on you risk in paying for repairs... almost any job is an engine out situation, including the timing chains which is part-and-parcel of owning an Audi it seems.
This is a bollocks comment from someone who probably never seen one in person.
I have 150k miles on my 6MT. I drive it daily, and hard. The clutch is original. This generation engine does not have the timing chain issues of earlier v8s.
They do require carbon cleaning due to direct injection and owners driving it at low RPMs.
I've been instructed to drive it hard every once and a while to keep it clean which isn't hard to do!
🤦🏻♂️ Timing chains weren’t an issue on this generation, that was the older V8s. Also, not everything is an engine out job, many of the common problems they have aren’t even that expensive to rectify
tune
It’s definitely not slept on trust me
Yeah its not 360kw
Issues i heard
Better value, Jag XFR Supercharged V8
They are expensive
Way too low to be useful on Aussie roads lol
this one has lowering springs so a little lower than factory
Not really.
Plenty of lower cars than this cruising around.
Just don't take it into a shopping centre carpark.
I'll take my 2010 Lexus ISF over that junky over priced money pit of an Audi your driving any day of the week. It will run circles around your car in every way. There is absolutely nothing that the Audi S5 has that is better than the Lexus ISF and I can be rest assured that my Lexus will never leave me stranded somewhere with a massive repair bill like all Audi's eventually will. I was never told by Lexus owners that I should set aside 10k for repairs if I plan to buy a Lexus. That's something that you only hear from people who have owned Audi's and BMW's because those cars were not built to last over 50k miles before you risk having their design flawed engines grenade themselves out with no warning what so ever. I bet the only reason that car your driving only has 49k is because the owner is too scared to drive it everyday for fear of it having catastrophic engine failure now that it's reaching it's 50k failure mark. The only reason he is letting you do a review on it is because he knows that it will help him sell it to some dummy who doesn't know that Audi's like this are going to die a quick death on them 4 months after they buy one. And you would need to have your head examined to purchase a vehicle that only sounds like it performs well but actually doesn't perform well at all. It would be different if it actually performs as well as it sounds but it doesn't and you will be left in the dust by countless other vehicles that do like my Lexus ISF does and my Lexus sounds just as good and you can pick one up for about the same price.as that Audi S5 and probably even less with a little bit more miles if you can even find one that has that low milage on it. They are hard to find with very low miles because people are not scared to drive them because they know their Lexus will have no problem getting to 300k miles while only doing regular oil changes and thats about it. I used to think that I wanted a manual transmission in my Lexus but the 8 speed automatic transmission it comes with was surprisingly quick to shift and I wouldn't change a thing about it. My Lexus bone stock will do 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds which is a respectable number for a stock V8 compared to that Audi which has a hard time doing it in 6.5 seconds. LOL That car is for suckers who don't know better and end up selling them for scrap way before they get to even 100k because they are not worth the repair costs to fix them. So you really need to take this video down and let your friend sell that piece of shit on his own if he even can because your only hurting your reputation doing him this favor of advertising that car as being something special and a great buy because who ever buys that car will be getting into that long line of ex-Audi owners who were screwed and will now swear to never own another Audi again. LOL LOL The poor bastards. I would rather buy a BMW M car so that I could at least get some real performance from it before it too will die an early death. At least i wouldn't look like a moron every time someone would blow by me in a race. Whoever buys that car better record that engine sound quickly so that he will be able to take it with him when he needs to start taking the bus to get to work because his engine blew up on him and he can't afford to spend what it will cost to repair it and now he is stuck with a car that he will have a hard time selling for even 10k because it won't run anymore. The only thing Audi's are quicker to do than other cars is having some catastrophic engine failure that will cost as much as what you will pay for a used one to repair it. LOL LOL and anyone who is foolish enough to take your advice on buying one of these cars will soon enough hate you and will be mad enough at you to hunt you down for putting this video up. In your video you use say "if something goes wrong" when everyone knows that you should have warned everybody by saying "something will definitely go wrong" instead. You just ruined your reputation by pushing that hunk of junk here and I hope it was worth it for you to do that .
Holy sh*t dude no one cares!!!! Lol
Not bad for a 253!
Ross is looking for a RS6 to review
Bring ‘em out!!!
