My Audi S5 V8 has not been the cheapest build to say the least. But what has it been like to live with, maintain & service. I go through all of the common problems and reliability issues with the S5 and talk about the insurance, fuel costs & driving experience.

Well done young man, as others have said, nothing seems to phase you and you remain good humoured throughout. I am severely sight impaired and no longer drive. However, I'm still a petrol head at heart and channels such as yours have become my new, "car magazines" because I cant see to read anymore. I was expecting a detailed breakdown mate as an example:
£800 wheels
£300 engine mods
£550 wrap
£600 coil overs
But with the price of a mechanic that's going to be around £3,000?
Something like: ££££ custom mods
££££ essential maintenance
Would be ace to see this combined with fuel costs over 6months?
I know these things can all be found online and are easily calculated with online tools but it would have been ace to see it in the video.

It is not really an estimate because the abilities and prices of tuning parts and choices very a lot. Essential maintenance on any german car will be high if people can't afford then there is no point of looking in to it.
Depends on how much and where you drive it. I have to say it's hard to keep under the speed limit. I've never drove a car that can tease you into giving it gas like this thing.
This guy is entertaining and nice. Compared to the bigger youtubers, this guy puts more work into his vids and cares about his community. Much respect my dude 👍

This is so accurate with the common problems. A5 2008 here and I can say - Yup, had to replace 1 door lock. Yup, had to replace upper arms which are 4 in total. The chain is actually good but what makes noise in my car is the belt tensioner. But thats part of the timing chain. So even the chain itself is good, your engine, transmission, exhaust, everything has to go out of your car. But I never heard of nor had any manual transmission issue myself.

First off, great video and content as always. Hello from Alberta, Canada. I'm 40. I pay 1200 CAD for full coverage insurance, 94 per year to plate it. My 09 s5 has push button start. I did have to replace the door handle sensors for keyless entry. There aren't many places for aftermarket Audi stuff here. If you do find something, its very expensive. I didn't know that the timing guide issue was fixed. Thanks again for the great content. Stay safe.

There is no depth to the sound though when you hear it in person (especially for a v8) as they are muffled and filtered to death. Also the auto gearbox makes the sound very flat and unexciting.
Listen to an e.g. TVR Chimera, that's how a V8 should sound.

I have a 2010 s5 4.2 v8. Best advice I can give is don’t cheap out and skip on maintenance.. one thing Audi loves is their maintenance!!! Keep up with and she’ll love ya in return :) such a little amazing car!

PVC issues are tricky. For me i had hesitation at 2k rpm. Fuel pumps, carb clean, sparks, fuel injectors, 60k miles. So far runs well.

great video.. keep it up. really enjoyed it. i have the A5 in red, but too scared to modify it as i dont want the insurance to increase an also dont want to mess up the car functionality, i would love to modify the car door to open with audi lights showing on the floor, fold out mirrors and some other inspirational stuff.
Only happened to stumble accross a one series episode and got sub’d instantly and went back and watched everything else. The content is absolutely spot on here like and as mentioned here definitely a very likeable relatable guy who hasn’t let the CZcams life go to the head. Keep it up and keep smashing it. Can’t wait to see what comes next. More subs than other similar channels and not a mention of fucking patreon in sight 🙌

Great work Mat. Biggest thing to watch out for will be a failure of the mechatronic resulting in inability to change gears - had to replace this on my 2011 A4 after 7 years, cost around £4000. Ouch.

Great videos on the S5. I have a 59 plate S5 and love it. I will be taking a different direction to Matt for two reasons: 1. Without discount, and even if I do the work myself, the costs of modding an S5 can mount up very rapidly. 2. The V8 S5s will be something of a dying breed. Normally aspirated, large capacity V8s were a brief flash of wonderful in the 00's. It couldn't last long before the killjoys got their knickers in a bunch and either taxed or legislated the car makers back into the land of boring 4 and 6 cylinder fare. Over time I feel that original, stock V8s will become, like an unmodded Mk1 Golf GTi, increasingly quite rare and difficult to find. I have kept mine completely stock other than running the RS4s 20in alloys rather than the 18/19 inch that were stock for the car. Even my exhaust is OEM (probably the first thing that new owners kick to the kerb). In time I think original V8s will become much more desirable than the later supercharged V6s (in spite of the V6 being arguable the better vehicle). In the land of forced induction a big, breathy V8 will become a king.

The S5's got upgraded guides for the timing chains, it was the older 4.2's in the s4 that had the timing chain issues.

Not massively expensive, but worth it. Agree with you that £12k for a supercharger ain't worth it. Keep the videos coming, really enjoy watching them!

The true cost is learning to drive chilled like, as fuel goes quickly. I have the manual shift V6 3.2 and love it on the German Autobahn. Will chip her soon to improve the beast! Like the wrap colour and grill bruv! Good job.
I had a 2010 s5 for my first car, had it for several years and didn't have any issues, just kept up with services and it was great. insurence was just over 3k but was at 1700 when I sold it

Been looking around for one. Some nice ones for sale at the min, cheap too. I thought my 3.2 V6 A4 sounded good, that V8 is amazing 👌
Love my Audi S5 2010 , i put ArmyTrix Valve-tronic exhaust on it and it sounds so Fucking amazing. I don't even listen to the stereo anymore , witch is Bang & Olefson, just the sweet sound of the exhaust.
Was there a video on upgrading the MMI or sound system that I missed? My S5 still has a CD player 🤷♂️
That door lock actuator is a really common Audi/VW problem. In everything, from Amaroks to Golfs to Rs4s, everyone seems to have the issue at some point!

Just bought one!! Looking at exhaust options 😰🤑🤕.. Love the sound of yours, which exhaust is that?
The microswitch inside the door lock is really "fun" one. You can get the switch alone and it costs about 3 €. However, to replace it, you need around 4 hours per door minimum. If there was as an upgraded switch that would last, it would be worth doing. Most of the time, it's easier to replace the whole lock (which still takes hours) and the lock body should cost around 70 € if I remember correctly.

Depending on year/model, they turned the 4.2L V8 around to better fit the engine compartment. But as a result, it's an engine out service if you have to replace the timing chain guides. This can run you $4-5,000 😢

The front OEM suspension arms are not solid enough. WHEN you replace those, always go for aftermarked upgraded parts even if you use it as daily driver.
Some say that you can reduce the wear of those suspension arms a lot if you don't rotate the wheel while pressing the brake at parking lots. This supposedly causes damage to nylon inlining within those ball joints.

I have A5. 3,2 fsi. Now for 1 year. Only problem is winter. Those windows have to lover so that doors could be open. But that glass freezes. Sooo yea, there were 2 times i had to go thought trunk. Now in winters i left one window a little bit open.

S5 was my first car and I bought it 3 years ago for 18k 2010 in white + red leather interior, some carbon fiber trim. Insurance was total rip off 1300£ quote on go compare, but ended up paid 2600£/annually due to "lack of driving experience" I commute 35miles to work a day + some social driving what cost me around 300£ for petrol (shell V Power) Due to this I sold car after 6 months of ownership, but it was by far the best car I ever driven. Currently have Jaguar XFS, but still missing "fan" part of the Audi.

Personally I think that your S5 series of videos has kickstarted your channel to what it is now, I know that you had that baby BMW before but this is the real deal not a little toy. I’ve really enjoyed your videos on this car and am a little sad that it’s come or coming to an end but you have def started something now, so hurry up and finish the Q5 and lets have a proper car
