- FX's new series "Shogun" (2024) isn't just a story of a lone westerner in a forbidden land. It's a tale of clashing cultures and hidden agendas, where the arrival of a shipwrecked Englishman throws a wrench into the delicate political balance of 17th-century Japan.
"Shogun" promises to be a thrilling exploration of a pivotal moment in Japanese history. It's a story where the clash of steel and the clash of ideals will determine the fate of a nation. Will Japan succumb to the influence of European powers, or will it find a way to preserve its traditions in the face of a growing external threat?
Go watch to whole episode on Hulu.

Buntaro is a man of flaws, but undoubtedly full of honor
he's vastly more interesting, complex, and nuanced in this series than in the books or prior TV series, they made a magnificent upgrade in his character, kudos to the show & actor for such a fine job.
@@The_Humaning yeah, his portrayal in the book is of a semi ape with good fighting skills

Three men.

She was so much more than just a woman.
@@Ron-oe7hg He didn't imply otherwise and she got outplayed kek, overrated
Idc what people say. This ending was perfect
Absolutely. And the fact that a second season is coming ruins this perfect ending.
Shogun was perfect in its storytelling, written, acted and filmed to show something precise that didn't need any continuity.
It's a shame that, once more, profit takes the lead over quality ...
@@Casimir2811Yeah, that’s a real shame. Plenty of material left in Clavell’s Asian saga to adapt if they needed to go to the well again. Blackthorne and Toranaga’s story is finished, and it’s hard to see anything good coming out of artificially extending it.
@@Casimir2811when was a season 2 announced
I'd like to believe that these two became bros over the next few decades.
idk if i cant be bros with the person who cucked me and i find out my contractual spouse would rather die than live with me but is happy with this man but at least we'll bond over the fact that nothing not even this cuck could stop them from dying
that is just wrong. 😂😂😂😂😂
@@viewer9932this is about real people you know.
@@Mthammere2010 Yes and Tokugawa Ieyasu was no one's "bro", he was aiming for the title of sei-i taishōgun, and that's what he got. He had vassals not bros

Absolutely perfect note to end on
The composers nailed the entire series, but the last episode especially. Just fantastic!
i wish mariko-sama was there to witness this 🥺
It took me an ENTIRE goddamn season to realise that John Blackthorne aka Anjin-sama is NOT the protagonist. He's the MAIN CHARACTER. Toranaga-sama is the PROTAGONIST and always has been since the very first episode.
The realisation hit me like a truck during the zoom out scene of Toranaga before the goddamn title-drop. This is TORANAGA'S STORY supported by JOHN'S JOURNEY
You got it mixed up
Anjin is the protagonist, but Toranaga is the main character
@@cyvader101 nah i didnt. Main character is the character the story follows. Protagonists are characters that progress the narrative objective of the story.
Hell, the coffin in the nail for me was the fact that the description the show gave of itself literally talks about Toranaga and not even the Anjin and my my mind went wtf at the realisation.
@@therabbidt you still got it mixed, Toranaga is the main character... with John or not he would have still achieved his goal, the guy is a strategist, he would have found other ways to be the Shōgun, it just happened that John was there and Toranaga didn't miss the chance.
@@TheJessy8888 Thats what I mean actually. Though, Im pretty sure its called protagonist and not main character.
John saw a sunken ship
Toranaga saw a man who can lead his war to victory
Самураи не должны работать, это дело крестьян, тут он выражает свое уважение
man...the show was great but it really could have used some more time to cook. kinda rushed some stuff. read the book if you loved it. the book is extraordinary.
Agreed. I read the book years ago and can still remember exact words to so many passages. Powerful.
That seems all too common in modern screenwriting.
Originally they only planned this for one season, so they had to rush it.
@@atticstatticYeah. Some stuff was far, far more powerful in the books. Like Blackthorne's suicide scene (which happens before the romance with Mariko in the books). Blackthorne's actually a much better man in the books too, Clavell makes a point of distinguishing Blackthorne's protestant ethics to bushido, and all the samurai in the book are always puzzled by how kind Blackthorne is too peasants and dying people. They probably thought that would be racist or something to portray.

Good points
Thank you that's way better than the other uploader who puts some crap idiot music in the ending
Does it say in the book whether or not Blackthorne suspected Toranaga burned his ship?
The best thing that's been produced in the last 30 years, and I'm rather depressed that it has ended.
Well said. I've watched it twice and the struggle to not watch it again is real.
I think fx would do well to cover the entire "noble house" series.
I loved shogun but it kinda felt like the show ends the same second it gets going.
They could have done much more; I hope they have a season 2, there's way more history to these characters: literally...
It’s a book. A near perfect rendition of a book. And this is how it ends.
The book is a fictional book based on history.
You guys! IMDB score dropped lets get those votes back up to 9.2 again 😊😊 lets work together for the amazing actors reputation
Incredible show!! Thats hows entertainment is created!!
Masterpiece
Where do I watch this ? Netflix available?
No, not on Netflix. It is on Hulu, though.
I wish they could've at least added 1 or 2 more episodes otherwise amazing show ❤❤❤
03:44 Cross of Mariko.
I hope they can find a good story and script for season 2
story became wonderful because it has an ending
It's always better when we can work together
Season 2 is signed
The general joy of achieving something together reminds me of the barn-raising scene in Witness:

No Horses or oxen ?
Yes 😂 but let’s be real this scene with men is much better
Rope pulling was the highlight of the whole season
I feel like I'm shouting at the clouds here, but what the fuck. I spent the whole show excited for this huge climax, and the climax is 2 dudes smiling at eachother. And remember everyone, there isn't gonna be a season 2 (atleast they say there isn't, maybe they'll change their mind)
This is the END
Well yeah, this is exactly where the book ended. There’s an epilogue that’s like, 300 words long-ish, talks about Toranaga winning the battle, but that’s about it. The implication is ofc that he becomes Shogun and unites Japan, which he admits was his deepest desire all along. (As his irl analogue, Tokugawa Ieyasu, did)
Sorry but not showing us the battle that was built up for several episodes was such a cheap and bad twist, the show had massive build up that got completely wasted. The book mentions the battle so why not show it.
I’d argue the show accomplished what it set out to do and that was clearly to subvert audience expectations. I feel like everyone went into this expecting, wanting some final epic battle that just never comes… on the same note, we start the story believing blackthorne to be the key to toranaga winning, but instead it’s mariko, blackthorne spends the later half of the show wandering around aimlessly (don’t get me wrong it’s beyond enjoyable😂) but that’s definitely not what the audience had in mind. Beautiful storytelling in my eyes
@@culleno872 to me it felt unresolved and disappointing. I don’t see anything clever about not showing a big battle, its just a cheap way out. Subverting expecations shouldn’t come at the price of letting the story play out. It would in no way undermine Mariko’s sacrifice. This way we only are told that eventually Toranaga wins but we dont see it. Might as well say that in episode 5, he’s gonna win so why bother showing anything. I liked the series and I will rewatch it in a few years but it could’ve been cemented as a generational epic.
@@DutchPlanDerLinde Why would there be a big battle though? Toranaga has already won before the battle even takes place. He has managed to keep the heirs forces away from the upcoming battle and managed to break up the council of regents, leaving Ishido by himself. The show isn't an action film, it's a drama.
