    I think the biggest challenge in sounding like Danny Carey is both his snare sound but also the tuning. The man tunes his toms differently depending on the song, making roto toms pretty much a necessity in fully capturing his sound.
    As far as this goes though, it’s probably as close as you can get on the budget.

      Thanks so much! He has one of the most unique drum sounds and it's so difficult to replicate on a budget. Just wait until we can bust the bank!

    Clear heads and an 8 inch tom is a signature sound of DC. Should've tuned that snare way higher too

    The biggest problem here is the snare sound, it has to be a bronze shell and tuned much tighter...

      Miloš Topić That would blow the budget. Actually you don’t have to tune the head up on a cast bronze shell up very high to get Carey’s tuning.

    Kind of a cool story but Danny Carey played in my drum kit at a show for one of his family members wedding. My brother and all his buddies played cover songs with Danny all night and he's a super cool guy. I can post the link if anyone's interested.

      I'd say the tuning isn't too off, but the snare itself just sounds a bit "cheap".

      Bottom head is tuned lower than the top head so youre getting that weird falling away kind of resonance. They even mention cranking the snare when they pick it out. Gotta crank both sides or it sounds like something bought at a toy store.

      @@ColtonWeeks17 maybe with the snares off a moon gel might work but idk if that would work for his normal snare sound. The one they're using sounds way off to me but that's just my personal opinion. Perfect example listen when he plays sober i don't think just putting a moon gel on it will fix the tone just stop the ring, I'll agree just adding the moon gel would sound much better but idk if id say it sounds like Danny's.

    Danny is by far my favorite drummer and musician, he is just unbelievable! I can’t wait to see when you do the next one without a budget. Another drummer I’d like to see you guys build a sounds like kit is Tre Cool from Green Day.

    Toms sound right, snare sounds close aside from that horrid horrid "whaaang" sound. Gotta get an EQ1 or like a power stroke head for the front of that bass drum though and cut away everything except the muffle ring.

    IMO the one thing you can't cheap out on is the ride cymbal. To me it's the most recognizable and best sounding ride cymbal ever made. But I also know a new one is as expensive as a cheap drum kit the old signature version that I have has always been super hard to find because Paiste stopping making it in 22" in the 90s for some reason

    Tool are an awesome group. Love how they are not afraid of weird time signatures and his drumming is something to inspire future drummers.

    As far as the tom tuning is concerned, how many turns for batter and resonant would you recommend with 2 rack toms and 2 floor toms? Sizes listed are diameter x depth: 10 x 8, 12 x 9, 14 x 12, 16 x 14.

    I love that his kit is large but he uses like 3 to 4 actual toms and the rest looks like pads.

    Cool video. The snare clearly was very far. I think a thick metal one would have worked better. A cast bronze would be quite expensive. TAMA John Tempesta, that Pearl Phosphorus Bronze, DW brass or copper. Those might work. Still not cheap but better priced than any cast bronze I believe. The ride needs to be a very thick cymbal with no wash. The 900 is not that ride at all. Soundcaster by Meinl perhaps in budget. Crashes could have been the thin RUDE, and a bright one from Paiste in the PST series (so so), or again maybe in Meinl Customs.
    Drums were not bad.

      While Portnoy is a fantastic drummer, he doesn't come close to Danny's polyrhythmic independence and finesse. Power is another thing where Portnoy falls short when compared to Danny.
      When talking about Neil, I believe Neil and Danny were friends; it's also known that Neil was a massive influence to him. In terms of playing, I'd say Neil is slightly below Danny. BUT Neil did pave the way for generations of drummers like Mike and Danny and countless others.
