    Sleeper, Planetary, and The Authority were some of my favorite comic series growing up. This takes me back.

    I love stories like this. Stories from the perspective of someone in a superhero universe where the superheroes showing up is the ultimate "oh shit" moment. The heroes are there to do the good work, nobody is questioning that, and we get to see what happens when they bust in through the skylight and all hell breaks loose.

    "Sleeper" is the best work of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. I love the art, the characters. They should bring this back!

    Brubaker and Phillips are a total power couple. Their work in Reckless is some of the best detective fiction I've read in a long time. Then again, Ed Brubaker has always been the best writer of crime/noir comic books around and his multiple works with Phillips are always excellent.

    Wow, this sounds like a series I can get into! I've been looking for something that is mature, intriguing and that is from a time when I was still reading comics when younger, and this seems to meet those demands. A complete noir-y spy storyline (yes, that rhymed nicely, in my opinion) that is composed of self-contained episodes? Yes, sir.
    I would also like to thank my fellow supporters of this channel. You help allows me and others to enjoy fine comic book analysis.
    Until next time. 🖖

    Tom Kings Human Targets seems to be trying to channel Brubaker and Phillips Sleeper, and fails in the process. Thanks to bring this book to the light of readers who might have missed out in its original run.

    As a fan of the original Wildstorm Universe (warts and all), it's great to see someone taking the time to delve into one of it's coolest books. Sleeper is great work, and easily read outside of the Wildstorm universe, though it's a great story if you're a reader of the other titles.
    It's a shame the Eye of the Storm/adults only era for Wildstorm didn't last longer. It was, by far, the best creative direction for a universe that had outgrown it's Image years silliness.

    I read all of Brubaker/Philips work in order of publication and before reading I expected Sleeper to be of the least interest to me because I knew nothing about Wildstorm. It didn’t matter whatsoever and can be read completely independent of any other books in the imprint, not only that but it’s a genuinely riveting story that keeps you turning the page. They have been a golden collaboration from Day 1.
    I would love to see this channel look at their whole career through to Reckless, their Gotham Noir graphic novel is also worth a read

      You are not delusional. At least, not regarding WildCATS 3.0. I might redo it, though. But I do believe someone pointed out a very problematic area of the title, so I think that's why I originally pulled it? I can't recall.

    I'm sure you're drowning in enough comics at the moment but I thought I'd chip in and recommend a great noir comic from 2000AD, Button Man by John Wagner and Arthur Ranson (Although Book IV's art is done by Frazer Irving, with colours by... Fiona Staples? Huh, that's a surprise). Basically, hitmen are hired to hunt each other down for sport, with a "3 times and you're out" rule. Would recommend.

    Great video! What are your thoughts on comic-arcs being presented as seasons of stand alone comics or limited series as seen in Gerber's Hard Time and Brubaker's Criminal?
    Also, in an earlier Q&A you mentioned that Sleeper was a comic you were shocked got cancelled, are there any other comics extinguished in their prime you liked or were shocked were unpopular? A personal favorite is Gerber's Hard Time

    • @StrangeBrainParts
      @StrangeBrainParts  Před rokem +1

      I'm good with the Season type of arc. As long as that's the plan from the beginning and the creative teams wants/needs time to recharge. If I remember correctly, Sleeper was broken into seasons in the hopes that a new number #1 would give it a sales boost. (Citation needed. Heh.)
      Hard Time is another good example, but I wasn't shocked it got cancelled. Just dismayed when it was. Clean Room is another one. Saucer Country I also mentioned in that livestream. Captain Britain And MI-6 (I think that was its title). Young Liars. Those would be a few examples. Oh, and Gerber's and Skrene's Omega The Unknown, too.
