    I don’t think there are any parallels. I think this was just a “tangent” if you will, as Sim was won’t to do. Beautifully done, mind you, but I don’t think there’s any point trying to read something into the larger narrative, since there isn’t one.

  • @alaenamcdonald1877
    @alaenamcdonald1877 Před 9 hodinami

    I think if there is any kind of overall “story arch” to Cerebus at the culmination of Mothers and Daughters, it’s that Cerebus being revealed as a hermaphrodite is a reflection of Sim’s projection of anything having to do with “feelings”s being “female” and male qualities being “rational” in his mind, with Cerebus clearly being a stand in for himself, he is saying the male qualities he has defined are exemplary and that female traits as defined by him are not only negative, but pernicious. It’s almost textbook case of mommy issues and wanting to dominate women younger or less powerful than you.

  • @alaenamcdonald1877
    @alaenamcdonald1877 Před 9 hodinami

    Cerebus is one of those most infuriating literary journeys where the payoff ends up being nothing more than watching a talented artist masturbate on page for decades. There is no message in the end and you end up feeling drained you devoted that much of your life and time to such 💩.

  • @alaenamcdonald1877

    Of all the good things he had done in his work, he had to re-con to justify his increasing mental deterioration. It’s unfortunate and devastating, really.

    I always found Aknaton a rather tragic character. I think he desrved more of a mention in this. He undertook the Infinity Horn task out of mercy rather than revenge, and one can see when he communes with his god Ra on whether or not he's right to use the Horn, it's obvious what he wants is for Ra to give him a third alternative: stop the Zygoteans without destroying everything. His method reminded me of the aliens from _2001,_ who birthed sentience and sapience in the races they came across and left them to interpret the Universe as they were. Aknaton struck ne as someone who would've spent his time enlightening and empowering others to pursue their own destinies if the Zygoteans hadn't been on the scene. Murder, especially cosmic scale mass murder, went against his karma, and if he had been forced to live with destroying the Milky Way, he might've turned into a Zygotean himself (figuratively), imho.

    I've read Brother Power's original issues, Neil Gaiman story and Vertigo one-shot, and I've honestly become a non-ironic fan of the character, both for his inherently goofy nature, but also for the potential his character could have in the modern era under proper care! There's a lot to talk about with the hippie movement, like why it failed and how many of the people involved have abandoned it or become what they had once hated, and I think a reimagined Brother Power having to deal with this in the modern era and become better than his creators while still retaining his soul and optimism in a much darker world (hence "a thing that fights and lives for it's soul") could be really resonant and interesting!

    I've seen the dog-headed style character around a fair amount, but I've never read any of this guys comics. It's interesting then, given how seemingly well known his drawings are, he's apparently obscure outside of Europe.

    Jason’s style has always reminded me of the movies by Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismäki, those directors are masters of deadpan humor, narrative economy and minimal simplicity. My favorite Jason book is The Last Musketeer.

    I would highly recommend up to, and including "High Society" - I did find "Church and State" started well enough, but became rather long in the tooth as it trundled along. I jumped off when that concluded simply because I was bored. I have, later in life, read Cerebus in its entirety, it was a slog, especially the latter half, Sim going slowly nuts was painful to watch.

  • @mrtchadd

    One of the things I love about Jason is the malleability of his style. He does genres ranging from Noir to Horror to Scifi to Memoir to Absurdist comedy and every variation in between, but he draws the same animal-ish characters and the same angle on the action and the same limited emotions. He rarely even does more than 4 panels a page at this point. It shows that a lot detail and rendering and visual excess isn't necessary and may even detract from storytelling. It's pure cartooning. Thanks for highlighting him, I hope more people give his work a try.
