  • In this video I describe several methods for distributing video locally. How to integrate your video system and your projection system and send a camera to your projectors, how to send video to many devices, like a record deck and TVs near by, and finally how to send video over long distances to a lot of destinations.

    Question re: SDI runs
    Is it 300ft total length of the run? Or can I run 300ft SDI to the AJA, and then another 300ft run to a TV/Projector/etc?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 6 lety

      As long as the "intermediate" device is what they call "re-clocking" then yes, you get another 300ft on it's output. That is one way to extend SDI to longer distances. And the AJA listed above is a re-clocking device.

    Hello Stephen, I was looking for solution on how to send video to our overflow room with lowerthirds and came across your video. I have a question, on your BlackMagic switcher, you have a upto 6 Aux, how did you do that? As we are using the BlackMagic Television Studio H|D which only have one Aux hence only letting us send full graphics to our projectors but we want to send video and lower thirds to other rooms as well. Thanks

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 10 měsíci

      The number of Aux outputs depends on the model of atem switcher you have. The TVS HD only has one Aux out. If you are just sending the same thing as your program out to the other rooms, just use an SDI distributor on your program out from the switcher. amzn.to/47a4hYg

    If I have a live streaming setup already in place and needed to feed an overflow room, couldn’t I bypass the switcher and feet of cable and related components and simply use a smart TV logged into the livestream broadcast? Or would I be better off to hard wire it?
    My church doesn’t have either in place now but we want to feed the overflow room once installed, as well as have the potential to stream to the web. So I’m trying to figure out the best system to feed the overflow room as first priority, and then also stream to our website or social media, if we do choose. And great videos, btw.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 4 lety +1

      Give it a try and see how reliable it is. Kind of depends on your tolerance for things like buffering, etc happening in the overflow room. Also, I wouldn't have those two operations, live stream upload and Smart TV download, happening on the same network connection, while they are theoretically going different directions, it's two high bit rate operations that need constant uninterrupted data flow to work.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 5 lety

      I'm not a fan of video over cat6. It's been nothing but problematic for me eventually. Video over IP is different, and that will be the way to go in the future, right now it's a bit cost prohibitive. Yes, quality will be maintained if the RF is done properly.

      @@BallastMedia What HDMI modulator do you recommend? I will copy your configuration. Hopefully I can get one for $400-500? :) So stereo mixed audio with 50hz bass and kick drum will be in tack. I love it! I will get my pencil and calculator out then and do a simple test with RF modulation. If I'm lucky, I may be able to use the existing cable there ( not sure if RG59 used). I take it you are referring to the same technology that Netflix and other streaming media use when you speak of video over IP?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 5 lety

      @@derickmcwilliams8089 I've been using a ZeeVee modulator for several years now and have been really happy with it. Even ZV is moving more towards IP based solutions. IP just means it's actually sending the video over your network, not a "cat6 converter" that's a point to point solution. Both ZeeVee and VSICam have some interesting solutions that look promising and cost effective for IP video distribution.

      Unfortunately the only output from the Mini line is the single hdmi output. Depending on distances, you could convert that to sdi and use an sdi distributor to send sdi to the TVs and then convert back to hdmi at the TV. I usually tell people that when they want to distribute video locally they have outgrown the Mini line of switchers.

      I'd have to know more about your entire signal path from input to output to really tell you what the issue is. That being said, HDMI in to a consumer level TV is going to introduce some latency. Consumer TVs aren't made with much respect to latency because in most situations a second or two of processing time isn't a big deal (watching a movie, tv channels, etc).

Whereas the live stream gets the stable, single choice of audio as specified in the OBS software. May be answering my own question here... but, can the single preferred audio source be set to come out of the ATEM switcher to the HD5DA, so that is only audio that comes out of the PGM feed from the ATEM? In which case the computer is only getting the single preferred source of audio, and the local TV's are also getting only that same source?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 2 lety

      What all is the signal running through? What's your path? You'll need to figure out what devices in your path are adding latency, and remember latency is cumulative, so if each device in the path adds some latency, you get the total amount added up. Usually for IMAG situations you need to have cameras and switcher genlocked together for the least amount of latency, and only use distribution devices that don't add significant amounts of latency to the path. Also, your display device may be adding processing delay as well, if your projectors or TVs are "consumer" grade and not pro grade they could add a significant amount of processing delay to the image.

      The Mini Pro switcher only has the one HDMI output that you'll most likely want to use for it's multi-view. Usually when you are trying to distribute video locally (and not just to a stream or recording) is when I tell people they have outgrown the Mini line of switchers. The Mini Extreme has more outputs, but still HDMI which isn't the best for distribution.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 6 lety

      We just stream at 1 bit rate, the computer is nothing special. I think it's an older generation i7 with 8GB of RAM. Built in GPU. We use the Livestream Producer app, which is different from Studio. Streaming 3 or 4 bit rates is asking a lot of your computer, it has to encode each one of those separately. And your internet connection has to be able to stream all those as well

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 5 lety

      You could add a decklink card to that computer and use the decklink output feature in OBS. As long as this output doesn't need to be seen in the room live because it will have significant latency.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 4 lety

      How do you plan to generate that content? Where will the TV content originate from, and where will the lower thirds come from? One way to do this would be to have the TV content be what you show on your main screens as well, so it would just be your "worship presentation software" feeding that. Then have a 2nd computer that is generating your lower thirds content. So those would be two inputs to your video switcher. Computer one would still be routed to the AUX output of the switcher which would run to a distributor to go to the TV and your projection screens. In the switcher you would setup your Keys to use the lower third content from computer 2.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 3 lety

      Think of a.2ME as two complete switchers, that just share the same inputs. One way to utilize that is to have 1 of the MEs mix the broadcast feed, and the 2nd ME mix the IMAG feed. That way you share all the same sources, but can send different things at different times to the two destinations. For instance in imag you may stay on a close up shot more, while the broadcast cuts away to wide shots more often.

    Hi
    I can't figure out how to do this(I tried video switchers but it's not working as we would), I have a computer running wirecast with 2 types of video feeds (PTZ cameras + a screen capture through NDI of a powerpoint presentation computer).
    the Power point presentation is sending it's HDMI signal (through HDMI extender to ethernet) to a TV and a wall projector.
    What i'm trying to achieve is to control what to show on the TV and to the Projector.
    Scenarios :
    Case 1 : Person is presenting on Powerpoint ==> Both the TV and the Projector are showing what the computer is presenting (PowerPoint) to the live audience.
    Case 2 : No one is Presenting ==> TV shows the actual wirecast feed (the live video that everyone on youtube is watching)+ the Projector is showing just a logo or a background of our choice.
    Case 3 : No one is Presenting ==> TV shows the actual wirecast feed (the live video that everyone on youtube is watching) + the Projector is showing a feed from one of the cameras.

      Are you wanting the output of the switcher (cameras) go to your projectors with lyrics overlayed? I'm not quite following your last sentence. If your switcher doesn't have an AUX output, then you'll need to take a different approach. Probably splitting your computer signal to go to the projection system and also to your video switcher. Or using a completely separate lyrics computer for your video and your projection.

If I'm understanding your setup correctly, I think the problem is that your sending video to your projectors from your switcher, but adding the titles downstream later in vMix. You'll probably need to rethink how you are getting your titles in to the video, use a computer upstream as an input to your switcher as your lyrics source and overlayed in the switcher. Hi Mr Ballard, How can do this using the Atem Mini?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  Před 4 lety

      The ATEM Mini isn't a great solution if you need to distribute video locally. The HDMI out usually needs to be used to see what you are doing (preview, etc). If you must, set the HDMI output of the Mini to Program and you'll get your program out, and you can distribute that, but then you are kind of flying blind. If you need to distribute to projectors, I'd go with a "bigger" setup, use at least the ATEM TVS HD switcher, and then you'll need a separate capture device to stream.

      I'm sure there is a way you could hack it. OBS is currently working on an "output" module that will allow you to send the output video to something like a Blackmagic Mini Monitor card. You can also send the video to a display output. (monitor output, but that doesn't include audio I believe.) In your situation you'd probably be best off finding a way to "stream" it locally over your network, something like this: obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-studio-send-an-udp-stream-to-a-second-pc-using-obs.455/
