This time, we're covering the FAL OSW.
The 'right arm of the free world' is unlocked at level 22, and is the first of two single-shot assault rifles.
The FAL, or 'Fusil Automatique Leger' is a Belgian weapon, designed at FN Herstal and in production since 1953.
The OSW variant, or 'Operator Specialist Weapon', seen in Black Ops 2 is the 'DSA SA58 Para Elite Compact', an American-built FAL with a short barrel and folding stock.
The OSW's short overall length means it could conceivably be used by paratroopers - as indeed some shortened FAL variants have been.
However, the SA58 is principally designed for police use, and this compact weapon fires the powerful 7.62mm NATO round - a full power rifle cartridge for times when compromising on power isn't an option.
In-game, damage is high - the FAL will kill with just two shots to the body at a close range.
This drops to a 3-hit kill at a middle range, or a two shot kill where one is a headshot - and across the longer sightlines you'll always need 3 shots.
Penetration ability is high, on par with the LMGs, the SWAT-556, and SMR.
Rate of fire is limited to 625 rounds per minute, generous enough for most trigger fingers.
When using the select fire attachment, the FAL will become fully automatic - but will fire at a reduced rate of 468 rounds per minute.
Hipfire performance is poor, due to a larger-than-average spread when compared to the other assault rifles, and the slower rate of fire.
The FAL's recoil is relatively light - almost not a factor when fired semi-automatically at a moderate pace.
When employed as a full-auto weapon via select fire, recoil is much heavier due to reduced centerspeed - but for mid-range engagements is still relatively easy to manage.
Aim time is standard for the class, at 250 milliseconds - and you'll move at 95 percent of the maximum base speed.
Magazine capacity is a little lower than typical for the assault rifles, at 25 rounds: but given the slower rate of fire and higher damage it's rare that you'll need all 25 shots in a single engagement.
In any case, reloads are relatively swift - at just 2.15 seconds to complete.
The two hit kill of the FAL means it can be quite effective up close, but only if you're able to accurately direct your shots - so it's imperative that you make good use of the adjustable stock, keeping your sights up whenever moving into the enemy's domain.
Sprinting is a sure-fire way to get yourself killed, with the FAL left unready and ineffective until you're able to get your sights onto your target - so a modicum of patience is the key, with careful ratcheted progression in favour of a blind rush.
The FAL OSW is a powerful weapon, capable of quickly killing opponents when fired accurately.
Few weapons in its class can kill with just two shots, and paired with the FAL's balanced handling, this weapon boasts a blend of power and flexibility that few can match.
However, there is a trade-off made in exchange for this awesome power - and the slower rate of fire and worse-than average hipfire can hamper your effectiveness up close.
The FAL's need for accuracy does force you to play in a more cautious fashion, too - if you're not able to place shots where they need to be, you'll find the FAL quickly loses its effectiveness.
Still, despite these downsides the FAL remains a terribly effective weapon - with its high damage giving it a noticeable advantage both at a mid-range and at a distance.
Such power is a blessing beyond measure: and this 'FN gun'...
...will be your opponent's curse.

funny how i've almost never seen anyone use it during my time playing bo 2, most people were gravitating towards smgs and AN-94.

Don't bother with the select fire attachment; yes, it makes the gun fire auto, but only at 468 RPM, and it's easy to manually get that or a higher ROF.

I used to use the same loadout, but replace the Executioner with the Five Seven. I find the Five Seven to match the FAL's semi automatic fire better, and find it to be more useful due to its higher ammo count. Stock and the Reflex sight allow me to use the FAL at the range it is meant to be used at more easily, and selective fire is useful for blitzing an objective or if I have to take down several enemies in quick succession. Of course, you could always replace select fire with extended clip, which I've found to be more effective when trying to get longer scorestreaks. I still play Black Ops 2 sometimes, and I still enjoy using the same old classes I made all those years ago. :)
I also used the same loadout, but yes, the Reflex sight is replaced by MMS, with the pistol being changed to a Five-seven and a smoke grenade in place of the frag.
I find it useful to use the MMS due to the heightened penetration of the FAL, the high capacity of the Five-seven, and the smoke grenade covering the sight of the enemy.
This gun was poorly misjudged back in the days. I liked the feature of full-auto. That was really neat. The reload animation was also pretty dope.

I prefer to forgo select fire and throw a hybrid sight (valley/ranger) on it instead, to have both long and close zoom options. That opens up a tactical grenade, and allows for dual-wield Tac-45's-which can kill in one shot when you pull both triggers simultaneously. If the opponent is too far away to accurately hit them with dual-wielded guns, you should be using the FAL on them anyway.
With a good trigger-finger, select fire is useless and only increases recoil and takes up valuable slots.
Now that i gave it a chance, I also like the executioner as a backup.
Before full auto got nerfed it was by far the nastiest weapon in the game. Yes the ttk is slower full auto however was just easier to use. God i miss this game.

I managed to hip-fire people with the fal-osw. I don't know I got lucky with it. I still use scavenger and toughness. Also I have a secondary as a back-up.
I didn't have unlocked when I first used it. I just got lucky with hip firing with the fal osw.

I've always used it like a DMR, with ACOG, front grip and FMJ.
Neither is necessarily better than the other. It all depends on what roles you're intending to fill with each gun. Both the FAL and the SMR are powerful, accurate weapons that are best utilized from a position with cover that overlooks a longer line of sight. When used how XboxAhoy advises, the FAL is a weapon that can actually turn the game to your team's favor. The SMR is better utilized as a scout build, watching your teammates backs and removing enemies from entrenched positions.

I appreciate how xbox ahoy tries to differentiate his class builds and use a wide variety of attachments, but he does so at the cost of effectiveness. An executioner for a sidearm? Are you kidding? We all know that several of his pick-ten slots could have been used much more effectively. Still he emphasizes the unique abilities of each weapon more than anyone else. Those abilities can be used for a good and often overlooked competitive edge. I still subscribe because each of these BO2 class builds is a great starting point for a monster loadout.

I don't understand how you can like the select fire. Semi-auto is much more accurate with a much faster fire rate. Also, fully automatic means more wasted ammo meaning more reloads. I use fast mag and either mms or acog with my FAL OSW.

In the last patch they nerfed the range when dual wielded (just like the KAP-40 I recall), but in the previous one they greatly buffed its mid range damage, making it a 2-3 shot kill within 8-10 meters or so. Its 1-hit kill range was slightly increased too.
Quick Question: which older weapon would you like to see as the next DLC weapon? Personally, I think it's time for the RPD to step into the spotlight once more.

I am 7 years late but hey whatever I miss blackops 2! AR for me was either scar (adaptable weapon - laser sight, GL, acog) FAL was definitely my marksman rifle (acog, fastmag and foregrip)

I can't respect anyone that used the select fire attachment on the FAL. It just removes the skill base for the weapon, making it noob friendly.
it makes it worse for cqc, since I kill people hetter with semi auto fire more in cqc.
+Bulge46 Its actually faster to spam the trigger than it is to use select fire. Trigger spamming lets me fire at the full 625 RPM. Which is how fast I can operate the five-seven.

Iron sights is only your opinion, and also, there is only more recoil on the smr if you use select fire, even if its recoil is higher, they would be already dead alot more time before the recoil kicks in.
Also the range is better

never run select fire on this gun. it takes down the range to a ridiculous level. you basically can only two shot someone at 1.3 meters. you also lose fire rate. also get more recoil. Trust your trigger finger and don't listen to this guy. I usually side with him, but never use select fire on the fal. My class is Fal with quick draw reflex and fast mag. lightweight, toughness, extreme conditioning, dexterity.
you can swap out fast mag for stock as well. I occasionally do that. I never run a primary without quick draw. Reflex is for longer range engagements

***** it's not. Select fire adds more recoil and takes away range. By taking the range to shotgun range. The 2 shot kill goes to 1.3 meters. It will always be a 3 shot kill with select fire. Go test it out in custom games. Have one with select fire shoot at someone too see how many shots it takes to kill them from a distance. Then switch to semi auto and see again. 3 for select fire. 2 for non select fire.

I know what I'm doing and I know what attachments to use. You don't. I was trying to give good advice but you guys wanted to be rude instead of give statistical information as to why you should use select fire instead of not using it.

you could always swap your secondary and nade for another wildcard with scavenger to make sure you don't run empty, or completely leave primary gunfighter as you will most likely only need stock and SF.

if you even happen to run out of bullets while firing at someone you can switch to it. if you hit the opponent even once it could mean a one shot kill with the executioner. any other handgun would requier more shots. the FN and Executioner's firepower synergizes well in that regard. its personal preference though.
With a good trigger finger you're a beast, I only main this gun most of the time, back in the golden days of BOII
This gun is a beast. At least 70 percent of my ruthless and relentless medals have come from using this weapon with Quickdraw, stock, and reflex sight. Never use select fire

A better loudout for rushing is the OSW with Stock and Fast mags (if you are skilled enough to have a fast trigger finger, you will notice that select fire is obsolete, and the reflex is optional.) Next, the perk is Lightweight, then Scavenger. Lastly put on perk 3 Greed. And put Extreme Conditioning, and Tactical Mask. UNLIMITED sprint and reduced overpowered flashbangs. On top of it all, a Five Seven for the backup. To fill the last open filler slot put in a C4 if you know what I mean.
This + reflex sight + stock = godmode on
Pre-ADSing. He does it quite frequently in the video and makes a note of people being able to do that when he talked about toughness. If you're one to be ready for those rounding a corner, you'll have less need of dexterity and quickdraw.
For the actual weapon itself, I actually seem to do better when I run it with a Hybrid Sight, Suppressor, and Fast Mag.
I love the FAL! I don't like select fire though, too much recoil. Plus it's a little cheap to be honest. But hey, to each his own.

Quickdraw Handle is also a good choice for the FAL.
Swap it out with the Quickdraw Handle. It's one of the more useful attachments in the game.
Very nice review, Sir. I just came here from the Drift0r FAL vs. SMR video. I was disappointed with the lack of accurate info and the backwards advice. This video however, is spot on. I just wouldn't recommend SF, (much more recoil, slower RoF, and reduced range doesn't seem like an advantage). QD or Silencer would probably be more effective.

Yes it will, but generally after playing the game for a while you usually won't have a problem with this factor. You could always swap out the reflex sight for another attachment if your worried about that :) but to be honest i generally don't have a problem with this and usually just run the FAL OSW with a reflex and fast mag or drop both and put on select fire and a suppressor :)
see, I always liked the OSW as an ad hoc IAR.. select fire, grip and extended mags, provide constant, slow pressure. scavenger keeps you topped up, tac mask keeps you safe in cover.

DSA bought the old StG58 production line from Steyr-Daimler-Puch. It's a metric-pattern FAL so it can't use Commonwealth inch-pattern parts and magazines.
extended mag, select fire, FMJ is the most terrifying thing you can encounter
Select fire is completely unnecessary on this weapon. the only attachments needed are quick grip and custom stock. the quick grip eliminates the need for a pistol as well. FAL w/ qg and cs, flack jacket, toughness, plus any other equipment and/or perks to round out your build to suit your play style and you'll be unstoppable.
he lists the country of the COMPANY that made it; John Browning was an American, but he designed the gun for FNH, based in Herstal, Belgium
I'll add my 2 cents for those who take to hardcore.
The FAL is most effective in my experience as an anti sniper class.
Primary Gunfighter is essetial
The three attacments that work the best for this build are Target Finder; FMJ; and Fore grip. One shot within the targetfinder's reticle with FMJ will most likely deliver a lethal ill if not a headshot.

I recommend playing on PC. Since with a good mouse you can set up a macro to emulate full auto while not using select fire. I set up mine to have a click time of 59ms and delay of 59ms between another shot
