I would just buy the authentic version, then request a pirate to teach me how to hack the DRM out of the equation, then patch the game onto a private server or local machine, therefore bypassing the traditional opt-out/lease structure and retaining legitimate ownership of the game in case the company belly-flops into a pool of razor blades.

That and I think it has something to do with the fact that hackers generally need couple or few days to crack it (varies a lot). So say a game get's released but the pirates can't get the game for couple of days some of them might grow impatient and buy the game instead. That's a win for the drm. I think the logic for shareholders etc is probably thinking this way. Remember, humans are weak and simple minded.

Akella, the developer and official owner/supporter of the title, is defunct. I contacted both Valve and Running With Scissors (Publisher), but neither could help me outside of Valve offering a refund. Just goes to show that DRM is not future-proof and can leave you with a product that doesn't work anymore, which modders have to fix. We could still technically own them and keep playing them years down the road.

Mostly agree on physical games being worse, except with Nintendo. For many reasons. Since the switch has very little amount of space, buying the physical game is cheaper in the long run (1), but IT'S CHEAPER ANYWAY(2): The prices on the Nintendo eshop for most games are usually ABSURD. Quite often you can buy a digital game on the Nintendo eshop for 60 bucks, or for 45 bucks on Amazon., physical. I mean, wtf.
Then, Nintendo is not reliable (3). I have bought Ocarina of times WAY TOO MANY TIMES. When I got it on wii, I should have kept it on wiiu. Well, I didn't. In fact, I lost my entire library of digital games for wii, and I had jewels.
Nintendo is just not to be trusted when it comes to this topic. I hope that changes, but I won't believe it if I don't see it.

I think it should speak volumes when a company removes Denuvo from their games a little while after release. DRM sucks. I like that game companies can patch out bugs and such, but the problem is, most physical games ship in an unplayable state, or the latest version of the firmware on your console won't let you launch the game without updating it. I usually buy physical games because I can get them cheaper than MSRP if it's on a console. Otherwise, I usually buy games on sale on steam, and there aren't a lot of new games that come out that I'm interested in... so... whatever. This is why I'm a proponent of modding your systems and making your own backups. Until these companies decide to take down sites that would back up the updates/DLC (still requiring you to have your own copy of the game) or they decide to (for some reason) take down custom firmwares for dead systems that were installed by modding, I have no issues with circumventing their nonsense. It does suck that your entire gaming collection with the 360 onward could become unplayable.

After Sony fixed the PS5 and PS4 CBOMB issue, the PlayStation physical game discs contain the full games playable offline (not a license code to download) so you can play these games in the future which is a step forward towards game preservation.

@@quatjohn4375, You can play digital games you bought in your library even if the CMOS battery dies, and earn trophies without a date and time. I'm talking about physical games if for some theoretical reason our world becomes like The Last of Us world where an apocalypse happens and servers, online stores, data centers around the world shut down, you can still play your PS4 and PS5 physical copy games on your PS5 (and PS4 for PS4 games).

Many people have said it before, and many people will say it again, but piracy is a service issue. Good policies and keeping your games available will do more to curb piracy than any DRM will.

DRM needs to have a death date.
If you put DRM on your game, the DRM goes ineffective after so many years, if the game is not updated.

All DRM does is punish honest customers and embolden pirates because their cracked copy which they did not pay a cent for runs faster.

this is a big reason why a lot of people are bringing out patches for old physical pc games, Because of DRM, for example I bought a physical copy of Sega Rally Revo for PC a while back and it has a form of DRM known as securom which is unsupported in Windows 10, which makes the main executable of the game unusable, the only way you could play the game was by using the SSE executable
