One of the most dangerous diseases that can affect your skin is skin cancer. Skin cancer is not a single disease cancer is of different types and depending on which type of cell is causing the cancer we classify the cancers. So in skin cancers we have melanomas and we have non- melanoma skin cancer melanoma is skin cancer which arises from melanocytes or the colour producing cells. This is a very rare type of cancer in Indian skin it's very common in us and European countries in Caucasians who have very fair skin. So because they don't have good sun protection and their ability to produce melanin is less they get more affected with these skin cancers in India. One of the commonest types of skin cancer we see is basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is also a type of sunlight related skin cancer you may see dark patches near the nose area below the eyelid near the corner of the eyelid or in this corner of the eyelid so black patches and sometimes they bleed from the center there's an ulcer. So that Basal cell carcinoma is one of the commonest and even as dermatologist we treat basal cell carcinoma commonly in our Clinic. Another type of cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the next commonest and melanoma that occurs in Indians is a different type of melanoma it's called acral lentiginous melanoma which means it's a type of melanoma which affects the extremities on the palms or on the feet and there black patches on the palms and feet and this is usually not related to sunlight. So how do you protect yourself from skin cancer? The most dangerous thing is having habit of smoking. Smoking can cause all types of skin cancers second thing is sunlight exposure people who are working in farms daily for many years people who are having outdoor jobs drivers or those who are into marketing field, sales traveling a lot meeting people these are the people who are more likely to have basal cell carcinoma. Incidence increases with age and if there is family history and if they are of very fair skin type. So any suspicious black thing on your face or anything which is bleeding which is is not responding to treatment in one or two weeks please visit a skin doctor near you. You can show a general physician initially. But if it is not responding please visit a dermatologist. The dermatologist might perform a test called dermatoscopy. This is a dermatoscope now dermatoscopes will be able to see microscopic changes and to confirm the diagnosis. They may take a small sample of that tissue called biopsy. So a biopsy is examined by a pathologist and they give the report of whether it's a cancer whether it's non-cancerous condition and if it is a cancer what type of cancer. So depending on what type of cancer, the treatment varies it may be surgical it may be having chemotherapy and it may be having radiation or radiotherapy . So depending on the cancer the treatment varies and often we consult with other specialists like plastic surgeons if you have to repair a basal cell carcinoma which is removed or for squamous cell carcinoma we may consult a radiotherapist to do radiation therapy. For melanomaa we may require chemotherapy they are very very rare melanomas in my practice in 11 years I've have seen only two cases of melanoma in India. So if you have anything suspicious on your face that doesn't look like a normal mole which has different shapes different size which is growing very rapidly which has come only in the last 2 weeks or 2 months then visit a dermatologist and get it evaluated.
