This is Part Two of a Two Part review.
It's the summer of 1989 and a slew of highly anticipated and popular movies arrive that would make it a banner summer for movie fans everywhere. However, there is one film that will stand out and be the biggest blockbuster of the year - Batman.
I take a look back at the summer of '89, revisit the anticipation, controversy and excitement of seeing the big-budget superhero film Batman directed by Tim Burton, starring Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger.
I made this project back in 2016. Since then I've had issues with it being taken down. This is somewhat annoying. So I did some re-editing and tweaking to it with the hopes that maybe it will be allowed to stay up and available to watch - at least for awhile.

After Batman ‘89, most of the major comic book characters’ film rights were obtained and languished in development hell until they were made. This one took ten years to be released, so it wasn’t a question of WHY there weren’t more comic book based films, it was a question of WHEN.

I think you honestly gave it a fair analysis. The movie doesn’t really have a rock solid story. It’s just Joker’s one off plots and Batman stopping him along with Vale being a damsel in distress. That’s really the story.

Burton's Bruce Wayne is like Howard Hughes - an eccentric recluse billionaire. His name is famous for the Wayne Enterprises businesses and the philanthropic Wayne Foundation, and fundraising charity balls, but he's so reclusive that the general public don't easily recognize him if do they see him.

I don’t think this Joker was supposed to have a real motive besides being insane from falling into the tank of chemicals and blaming Batman. Also, when Vicky asks him what he wants, he spontaneously comes up with the answer of having his face on the one dollar bill meaning that he hasn’t put much thought on what he actually wants.
That was my take on it anyway, great videos by the way.

The reason Joker has the weird smile is because his nerves where severed and he physically can’t move it

In those days, they didn't have Thursday evening "preview" showings. You had to wait until Friday. So went to a 12:01 a.m. Friday showing.

There WERE successful comic book movies in the 90s:
    - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    - Dick Tracy
    - The Rocketeer
    - The Addams Family
    - The Mask
    - Men In Black
    - Blade

That Teen Spirit rendition... feels more haunting hearing it in this review, after hearing another Nirvana track rendition, being used for the new Batman trailer

Great review, but I think you're missing the point about Nicholson's Joker. It's not like any of the more modern variations where Joker has a purpose or constantly whips out his Psychology For Dummies book and preaches about society(which is what every new version of Joker has done ever since Ledger, let's be honest). The Joker is at his best when he's unpredictable and you don't know what his end goal is. He should be the psychopath that tries to blow up an orphanage because it's Tuesday or something. With the exception of Mark Hamill, I still feel Nicholson is the best and most faithful version of The Joker. At least in my opinion.

With a lot of the behind the scenes material there was a lot of in the moment creative decisions done thinking it would make the movie a bigger hit. Producer John Peters and Jack Nicholson watched Phantom of the Opera and then the confrontation between Batman and the Joker at the end was changed to emulate it.

10:52 I never heard of this classical version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” very cool and very fitting to the tone of this video review.

Nicholson's Joker needs the appliance because Napier was very vain. Just white skin and green hair might have upset him but hair dye and make-up could cover that. No, he needs the disfigurement for that crime doctor scene to work and for Napier have that psychotic break.
The reason there weren't more superheroes movies in the 90's? STAR WARS. Every sci-fi movie and tv show released after Star Wars was labelled a rip off regardless of how similar or different it was. And few of them were successful. There was something about certain genres (sci fi/fantasy/horror) that got extra critical scorn for making similar movies, as well as disinterest from the public. I think Hollywood looked at big budget genre successes as wonderful one-offs for a while. "Great we made money, but let's not risk money making pricey fantasy picks for a fickle public that will be picked apart by professional critics."

  • @thethinkingcatakaneonormie3527

Great video of the 1990's this And Dick Tracy even the crow I found massively overrated as I prefer darkman the shadow the phantom and my favourite the Rocketeer, I think my problem with this movie and all that followed is barman and live action really doesn't work as the need to make a movie they remove everything that makes barman work in the comics. The best cinematic barman movie that still works is the Mask of Phantasm as it has a great plot and gives backstory.

I wanna know your thoughts on Batman Returns. I'm not a huge fan of it but I appreciate what Burton did there. It just went... too far in a few places. Always preferred the first film. The less said about the other two after Returns the better.

Warner Bros. gave him the keys to the castle on that film....since he was not happy with Batman 89....I like Returns but loses steam with the rocket penguins.

I agree if they tone down the unnecessary blood and gore sexual tension between Catwoman Batman and Penguin and bought back the tone from 89 it would have been better batman returns

Yeah, they did the Joker's face on the bills in the comic. So I'm pretty sure it was in the script. 13thdimension.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/comic4.png
