      U might not get that the ring can control the bearers actions with his own evil will of sauron, because he wants back to sauron. So the ring took control of frodo the longest time yet in ozgiliath to deliver himself to the nazgul and kill sam, but then frodo regained control. Also, the many times where frodo almost took the ring on his finger, it wasnt him doing it conciously, it was the ring fighting his will not to do it, the ring wanted him to get detected. At the inn of the prancing pony, the ring changed his size to slip on frodos finger instead of getting caught in frodos palm like frodo intended. Same story was when the ring betrayed isildur. he changed its size, was getting bigger, so it would slip from the finger and reveal isildur.

      They're probably volunteers. I don't see the Elf high command being assholes and forcing them to fight knowing they're immortal and knowing they're so close from leaving to the Undying Lands.
      Also earlier in their lives, these elves probably volunteered to join the army (I don't think they were drafted and forced into it) - they are professional soldiers after all, you can tell by the way they carry themselves (discipline) and how accurate they are with a bow. And soldiers sometimes prefer to fight for a good cause and risk dying, over living an uneventful boring life forever (boring to a soldier that is).

    Sam’s speech makes me tear up every time!:
    “It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened?
    But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why.
    But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back. Only they didn’t, because they were holding on to something…That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”

    The nazgul rides Fell beasts, the dragons of middle earth are much larger and very intelligent. If you decide to watch The Hobbit series you will see a real dragon.
    The trees surrounding Helms deep are actually sent by Treebeard and are wild trees called Huorns. As you noticed, they will kill anything that enters their midst. They weren't there at the start of the battle, they came during the last night of battle, as Huorns can move quickly if angered, if I remember my Tolkien lore correctly.

The (male) ents were mighty beings, with much in common with trees, that might become more and more like them over long millennia (sleepy, lazy, or rooted), while the huorns began as trees, but became more active over time, with voices and movement, and some, apparent magical power.

    In case you are wondering why the dwarves weren't in any of the films other than gimli is because they were fighting a very intense war in the North at the lonely mountain but a few years earlier sauron said he wouldnt attack them and would help them if they pointed them in the direction of the ring and if the dwarves found it for him he would give them 3 of the dwarven rings of power. The king sent the messenger back with no answer and then sent gimli to the council of elrond and prepered the lonely mountain for war. Souron sent a large force of easterlings (men who served him) to go and kill all of the dwarves in erebor (which is the kingdom of the dwarves in the lonely mountain) and the dwarves had very good human friends in Dale (right next to them) and they helped the dwarves. The king of Dale died in the mountain and the dwarven king died defending his body.

    The scene with Aragorn falling off the cliff is not in the book. They added that to the movie so they could fill in some more of the backstory of his relationship with Arwen.
    The movie version of Faramir is very different from the book. In the book, he was not for even a moment tempted by the ring. He never took Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath. He was wiser, calmer, and humbler than his brother, and much beloved and respected by the people of Gondor.
    Re: The Battle of Helm's Deep, a siege battle is not the same as a battle on an open field. One-thousand vs ten-thousand on an open field, obviously the ten-thousand win easily. But if the one thousand are inside a fortified castle, it's much more evenly matched. The whole reason for castles is to be easy to defend against a larger force. That being said, the army of orcs was still a serious threat. And the people being sieged have one serious disadvantage - no way to get more supplies. If the siege goes on long enough, they'll run out of food, and arrows, and everything else. It's much easier for the people outside the castle to get more of whatever they need.

    Gollum is my favorite character in the series. Smeagol temporarily overcomes his split personality in this one because of Frodo's kindness but then the betrayal causes Gollum to return. His Smeagol personality is too weak and needs the stronger Gollum to handle the traumatic situations for him. No spoilers for the next movie but I don't think there's ever been a character quite like Gollum in fantasy or otherwise. He's not an antihero, he's not fully an antagonist, but he's extremely complex and has more layers than an onion in the Shrek films.

    About the opening of the film, one of the best things in this part is the soundtrack. Here are the lyrics from when they are about to fall into the water:
    Mettanna
    Nárendur
    An mauya
    Mahtie
    Mettana
    "Mettana" translates as "to the end" in quenya, and the word is related to the task that Gandalf has: to assist men in the war against Sauron. He can't give up.
    The source of the lyrics entirely recites:
    Cuiva Olórin
    Nárendur
    Tira nottolya
    Tulta tuolya
    An mauya mahtie
    Ter oiomornie
    Ter ondicilyar
    Mettanna
    Nurunna!
    That is in quenya:
    Awake Olórin (Olórin = Gandalf)
    Servant of fire
    Face your foe
    Summon forth your strength
    For you must fight
    Through endless dark
    Through chasms of stone
    To the end
    To the death!

    Numenor was an island kingdom of the 2nd age (we are in the 3rd in the movies). Located in the middle of the ocean, it was inhabited by men who helped the elves and the Valar (highspirits sort of gods of middle earth) against evil during the 1st age. So at the end of that age beginming of the 2nd, they were given this marvelous island as well as long life (up to 500 years if you were a king). They were corrupted by Sauron to seek inmortality and because of that the island was doomed and sank into the ocean. The survivors came to Middle Earth and founded Gondor and Arnor. The blood diluted except for some few families and the royal line (that of Aragorn).

    These are my favourite films, but one gripe I have is how much they changed the character of Faramir. In the books, he is the purest sunshine child you could meet, who was able to resist the lure of the ring. The filmwriters feared that keeping that characterisation would weaken the audience's view of the power of the ring, so made him a lot harsher.
    Interestingly, they also change Aragorn's characterisation in the other direction - in the books, he is a lot haughtier and prouder, initially unwilling to lay down his sword to enter Theoden's hall, having to be persuaded by Gandalf.

    • @MsNanceePants
      @MsNanceePants Před 3 lety +7

      Yes, Yes, Yes! Faramir is my favorite of the secondary characters (in the books):
      “Here was one with an air of high nobility such as Aragorn at times revealed, less high perhaps, yet also less incalculable and remote: one of the Kings of Men born into a later time, but touched with the wisdom and sadness of the Eldar Race. [Pippen] knew now why Beregond spoke his name with love. [Faramir] was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings.”

    • @miraculousninja1739
      @miraculousninja1739 Před 2 lety +4

      True, remember those points in the book.
      I wish they made Faramir a little more humble and respectable. He wasn’t as cruel as he is in the film, but I don’t hold it against Peter. The audience would wonder if he was more like Boromir, especially if they didn’t watch the extended version.

  • @evenmoor
    @evenmoor Před 3 lety +16

    9:18 This flashback scene adds so much context to the actions of Boromir and Faramir that this is one of the huge reasons I recommend the EE over the theatrical version for The Two Towers. The theatrical version goes basically from Faramir revealing that he's Boromir's brother to him being informed that his rangers have found Gollum.
    11:22 It's not that Theoden necessarily thinks they can win against an army of 10,000 Uruk-hai, but that the only alternative they have to fighting them when they get there is to just give up and die. As far as the Rohirrim are concerned, they'd much rather fight and die than give up and die.
    11:54 In the books, the one problem was that the forces of Rohan in the region were scattered. Helm's Deep is too far from Gondor for aid to come from there in time, but the scattered soldiers of Rohan could be regrouped. It's these men who Gandalf left to find and gather in the book, who show up to help end the battle (as opposed to Eomer, who was actually at Helm's Deep the whole time in the book).
    12:40 Well, yes, they're young. The alternative is to fighting is just dying, so... Also, the young man that Aragorn talks to? That's Haleth, the son of Hama, the guy who was the door warden of Edoras and got killed first during the warg attack.
    13:06 One of the (many) things I love about this film trilogy is the use of music. Even if you don't instantly recognize the reinforcements as elves by looking at the, the distinctive musical theme tells you exactly what you're looking at.
    16:18 This uruk-hai we affectionately call "the Olympic torch-runner." There's no real reason for him to be carrying an extra-sparky torch. I guess they were just feeling a little dramatic, as if an exploding wall (remember, gunpowder was practically unheard of in Middle-Earth!) wasn't dramatic enough.
    11:53 The dragon left because Faramir shot it with an arrow. Fell beast or not, it's still a living creature (unlike the Ringwraith who rides it). Faramir was basically the only Man able to keep his head in the presence of the Ringwraith and actually fight back in a meaningful way. He couldn't kill the Nazgul, but he could definitely do damage to its mount.
    23:52 I love this moment. Pippin finds an apple and looks skyward. Remember the first movie? Pippin was complaining about Strider not knowing about second breakfast, and Strider helpfully tosses a couple of apples back at them (one of which hit Pippin in the head because he wasn't looking).

  • @v0dka885
    @v0dka885 Před 3 lety +22

    I love how Peter Jackson managed to compile everything in order since the book told 3 different stories in the second book, 1 portion told in Aragon, Gimli, and Legolas perspective in meeting Gandalf, the other is Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard and the Ents and the 3rd is Frodo, Sam, and Gollum traveling with the ring. It seemed confusing reading it until you realized it's the same time frame but told from different perspectives.

      The elves in Helms Deep is visually stunning, to bad they werent there in the books.
      I think Jackson decided to mix the battle of Helms Deep with the attack on Lothlorien, since he couldnt fit both in one movie, to show that the elves were also effected by Saurons corruption.
      In the novel the rohirim fight alone, and are on the verge of total destruction when Gandalf shows up with reinforcements in the very last minute.

    Explanation for Aragorn’s age and the destruction of his homeland:
    In ages past, the Edain (some of the first men that came into being) were gifted long life and the Island of Númenor by the Valar (Spirits that existed before time, and brought the world into existence) for their part in defeating Morgoth (A fallen Valar and previous master of Sauron) and eventually became known as the Númenoreans.
    The Númenoreans in time became envious of the elves for their Immortality. The last king of the Númenoreans Ar-Pharazôn was power hungry and prideful, and when he heard of Sauron’s expanding power in Middle-Earth and him being named Lord of Men, he sailed to Middle Earth to challenge Sauron. The vastness of Ar-Pharazôn’s army was such that Sauron’s army abandoned him and Sauron was captured and brought back to Númenor. Sauron corrupted Ar-Pharazôn and convinced him to attack Valinor (“The undying Lands” where the Valar reside and immortal beings return to when they die) to force the Valar into giving him immortal life. Men weren’t allowed to enter Valinor, let alone try to conquer it, so Eru (The god who created the Valar and other spirits) turned the world from a flat disk into a globe. This resulted in the continent of Aman (which includes Valinor) being removed from the world and Númenor sinking into the sea. Aragorn is descended from Isildur, one of the Númenoreans who fled Númenor and took refuge in Middle-Earth.

    Something you don't get in the movies is that all realms are under siege, all the elve kingdoms, the mens kingdoms in the North, and the Dwave Kingdoms. In the Books it is Roman alone with the trees doing cleanup, but the forces is Sauraman never take the keep, even though they do blow the gate and piles of stone they make at the gate. The caves are actually in cliffs behind the feeling wall, but most of the women an children are at Fungal low which is in the next movie.

    0:54 One of the major themes in Tolkien's works is longevity (alongside immortality). Aragorn and Bilbo are hardly standouts of being older than they look.
    Chronologically, Frodo was 33 when he took up the Ring (which is, by Hobbit standards, coming of age) and had his aging slowed over the 17 years he spent carrying the Ring. A nice tidbit from the books is that Frodo was about a decade older than Boromir.

    Not sure if anyone I said it yet, but the wizards have hierarchy:the white is the leader, followed by the grey, then the brown, and the two blues (which we never see) and so when Gandolf is reborn after vanquishing the Balrog he gets promoted to the white, which is why he says “I am Saruman, at least how he should’ve been.”

    The character of 'Treebeard' which is the common-speech translation of 'Fangorn' the forest the Ents inhabit, Tolkien based on his old friend C.S. Lewis, the writer of the Narnia Chronicles and many other great books. He had a rather booming voice and it was said that his students (he too was an Oxford College Don, like Tolkien) could hear him coming down the corridor, his deep voice sounding like the 'Hroom, Hroom' noise Treebeard is said to make as he speaks.

    22:21 to answer it basically when the line that Gandalf gave " The ring , it wants to be found " basically with the power of Sauron and The Ringwraiths , it's basically putting a spell or kind of like hypnotizing type of effect , Sauron was speaking sort of . Making Frodo stand still , trying to give the ringwraith the ring so it can be brung back . Hence why the rage he had on Sam when he dragged him down . The ring/Sauron is slightly controlling him . Basically it wasn't Frodos doing . Just the same way it controlled Boromir and others . It gets them mad in different ways , different effects. It goes so deep and hard to explain , lots of lore in the books , if you know how powerful Sauron was in that prologue ( very soon we'll get to see him more physically in the second age tv show by Amazon soon 😁 ) you'll know how hard it is dealing with his spirit .
