      I'm not in favor of Draco, but I remember reading that part and really being disturbed by it.
      Teachers abusing their power to humiliate students and (don't remember if this was only film or also book) forcing them to shrink and be pushed into each others clothes or undergarments, being bounced around on the rock floor, squeaking in pain..I don't know, I can only imagine that fueled Draco's feelings of hatred even more.
      I mean, I'm a friendly girl and I was a friendly girl during 'highschool' times, but if someone turned me into a ferret, threw me on the pavement while the rest laughed at my shrieking and then stuffed me in the trousers of my friend, forcing me to crawl around there, I would probably set fire to the school, no further information needed.

    26:04 Yes, Barty Crouch Jr, together with a few other Death Eaters, used the Cruciatus Curse to torture Neville's parents to the point of insanity. That's why Neville was so affected when he saw Moody demonstrate that curse on the spider in class.

      Bellatrix Lestrange (Draco's aunt, his mother's sister) was also a very active participant in the torture of Neville's parents. They are never seen in the movies, but in the books, they're essentially in a mental ward for life, their minds all but gone. This scene is before the trio stumble upon Neville and his grandmother during a visit when they're visiting Arthur Weasley in St Mungo's wizarding hospital, so they don't yet know why Neville is so traumatized by seeing Crucio in action. Gildroy Lockhart is also present in the mental ward, still minus his memories, but with his massive ego back.

      @@SebScreen in the fifth book (it's not in the movies) you actually meet Neville's parents in St. Mungo's, the magical hospital. They live there permanently in their version of the psych ward. It's a really sweet scene where Neville's mother gives him a gum wrapper, and his grandmother tells him to throw it out, he has a bunch of them, and at the last minute when she's not looking he slips it in his pocket. It really shows how much love and pride Neville has for his parents, and its a great small insight into who Neville is as a person. I wish it was in the movies.

    30:00 Yup, all the Dark Mark tattoos are linked. When Voldemort presses on the tattoo here, every other person with one feels it burn (they change colour also). Every Death Eater gets branded with one by Voldemort when they are accepted into the ranks.
    The tattoos are the result of a powerful curse so there is no way to remove them completely. The tattoos did fade somewhat while Voldemort was without a body, then started to become more vivid again as Voldemort got closer to regaining his body.
    That's what Karkaroff was freaking out about with Snape in the store cupboard at 26:10 (since they both have one, though neither showed up when Voldemort summoned the Death Eaters this time).

    • @HealhoeGaming
      @HealhoeGaming Před 3 lety +2

      they darken/fade depending on how much power voldemort has, jk rowling later said they eventually fade into a scar almost like harry's scar so assuming this is true as harry got rid of the things (trying not to spoil anything) in the later movies the dark mark started to fade and after voldemort dies it eventually fades away into a scar over a few years of him being gone.

Every single wand. It so happens that the phoenix whose tail feather is in your wand, gave another feather - just one other. It is very curious indeed that you should be destined for this wand when its brother - why, its brother gave you that scar.” but it is never implied or stated what phoenix they came from. to end this with a fun fact, there were only 2 wands ever made using a phoenix feather as the core which are obviously harry's and voldemort's wands as phoenix's are EXTREMELY hard to domesticate/tame with only 2 phoenix's ever being domesticated with one being fawkes (dumbledore's) who donated only 2 feathers and the other being sparky (mascot for new zealand's quidditch team) who as far as we know has never donated a feather.

    awesome reaction! by the way, something you might find interesting: the reason that harry saw the ghosts of the people voldemort had killed when they were fighting is the reverse spell effect or priori incantatem, a very rare effect that occurs when two wands with the same core attempt to duel each other (you might remember from the first movie that harry’s and voldemort’s wands are “brothers”)! the winner's wand forces the loser's wand to produce "echoes" of the most recent spells it had performed in reverse order. the ghosts we see are the “echoes” of the people murdered by voldemort.

      just want to add to this by saying the priori incantatem produces echoes in reverse order of ANY spell but since voldemort only ever uses his wand to use the killing curse on someone that is why the ghosts appear, if he used other spells it would show echoes of those spells too but since voldemort is a 1-trick pony and only ever uses the killing curse thats why they appeared and its actually extremely rare in the potterverse.

The class is a bit dark but has the sunlight coming through. It starts off telling you that there is magic both beautiful, fun, dark, & even deadly. Lastly we have the hero & his legend, "the only one to survive the killing curse...and he's sitting in this room." Also my favorite line.

    If you check back to the previous film, when Lucius Malfoy draws his wand on Harry, it sounds as though he's going to use the Killing Curse - which would surely be a bit drastic. [lol it'd make for a very short series if he'd finished the spell!]
    When Harry got his wand in the first film, he was told that Voldemort's wand had the other phoenix feather from Fawkes. In the graveyard fight, the two wands recognised their relationship and connected. The power exchange caused Prior Incantato, revealing the spells the wand had performed in reverse order: so Cedric appeared first, then the old man, then Harry's parents.
    The actor playing Mr Diggory gives his all in his grief: we'd only seen him a couple of times, for no more than a couple of minutes, yet you really feel for him.
    ps: In the book, the words "Did you put your name in the goblet?" are followed by "Dumbledore asked calmly"

To the point that he prepares all his own food and drink to avoid poisonings. So it was the perfect cover for polyjuice potion that Moody only drank from his own hipflask

    Great reaction. Some more info the films don't tell you, what happened in the graveyard is called Priori Incantatem, a rare manifestation that occurrs when two wands with the same core (taken from the same animal) attempt to duel each other. If you remember, Ollivander tells Harry that his and Voldemorts wand have the same core, this means the wands will refuse to properly duel each other. Instead, the two wand holders are forced to compete in a battle of wills. When one wand manages to overcome the other, it forces the losing wand to regurgitate "echoes" of the most recent spells it had cast, in reverse order. If the last spell was the Killing Curse, then a ghostly "echo" of the murdered person will emerge from the killer's wand. These retain the appearance and character of the deceased person, and are able to hold conversations and could remember the events leading up to and following their deaths.

  • @ChrissonatorOFL
    @ChrissonatorOFL Před 3 lety +4

    Yep, in the duel, with Harry and Voldie's wands having the same core, the duel becomes a battle of will... and since Voldie was losing that battle, it caused their wands to link and forced his wand to regurgitate the last spells performed by the wand, which had all been killing curses.

    Something that really bothers me is the period where the Death Eaters show up at the beginning. In the book, they're torturing muggles for entertainment, defending against the authorities, and yes causing some damage and lighting some fires. But in the movie, they are all out attacking the camp for like, no reason. My other is of the casting of the dark mark itself. In the book, it's seen as something so terrifying that it even scares the Death Eaters away. In the movie, it just kind of happens. This entire portion of the movie plays out like their only basis for the scene is "Death Eaters, damage, fire, dark mark"

    You've officially made it halfway through this series, 4/8 films! I still think they should have made two movies out of this one because of how much was in this book though. I mean, even the books literally doubled in pages! I still remember how excited I was for this film to be released way back then when we had to wait a full year in-between movies, wondering how they would portray all the challenges and Voldemort's return.
    Oh yeah, good news: After the main Harry Potter series there's actually a spin-off series called Fantastic Beasts that takes place about 70 years prior to the HP era, and there's a total of five films planned for it. Bad news: only two of the five have released so far (2016, 2018). The third was supposed to be in 2020 but covid probably delayed it to 2022, so I'm guessing 2024 and 2026 till it comes to an end.

    @nicolasbls1738 Před 3 lety +16

    A few elements of the plot to better understand, I hope you will take the time to read everything if you are interested in it:
    The story of the Crouch family is much more complex but they have simplified it in the film because of the format. When Bartemius Crouch sent his son to Azkaban, it was just after the time of the first Wizarding War, he was at that time head of the Department of Magical Justice and sent Deatheaters to prison without trial (including Sirius Black, wrongly accused as we know). Moody was the most powerful and feared auror by the Deatheaters. Crouch who was intractable however agreed to drag his son to a trial when he was captured by Moody along with three other Deatheaters : Bellatrix Lestrange, her husband and her brother-in-law for using the Crucio Curse on two other aurors (who were Neville's parents), until they lost their minds (Frank and Alice can’t even recognize Neville now). Crouch made this trial public so that everyone could see that he despised dark arts to the point of sending his own son to Azkaban. His wife, whom he loved deeply more than his son, asked him, as a last wish before dying of the disease that was eating away at her, to find a way to free their son. Reluctantly, Crouch agreed and during a visit to his son in Azkaban, Crouch's wife, in secret of course, exchanged places with Barty Jr. in his cell, taking great care to take Polyjuice potion until the end. His wife thus died in Azkaban under the guise of Barty Crouch Jr. Bartemius Crouch freed his son but subjected him to the Imperius Curse to prevent him from succumbing to his past follies and going in search of Lord Voldemort. For his part, Bartemius lost his notoriety at the ministry because of his son's reputation and found himself director of the Department of Magic Cooperation when everyone saw him as the next minister.
    The problem was that a witch in the Ministry, Bertha Jorkins, had accidentally bumped into Barty Crouch Jr. when she visited Bartemius who was the head of his department (Bertha was nosy and sneakingly listened to the Crouch's house-elf who was talking to Barty Jr, hidden under a cloak of invisibility), when Bartemius noticed, he put a Confondus Charm on Bertha so that she would not reveal what she saw to everyone. When she went to visit a family member in Albania (where Voldemort was hiding from the first Harry potter volume), she came across Wormtail, who was at this time in search of Voldemort. He captured her and brought her to his master. Using his powers, Voldemort was able to search in Bertha's memories. Bertha, working in the Department of Magical Games and Sports, knew that the Three Wizards Tournament would be held at Hogwarts this year, that Alastor Moody would be appointed professor of defence against the dark arts, and on top of that Voldemort discovered that a loyal deatheater was ready to serve him but subject to the Imperius Curse by his father. So Voldemort killed Bertha and found Barty Jr. who was beginning to resist his father's spell in his house. Barty Jr. and Wormtail are subjected Bartemius to the Imperius Curse. That's how they set up this trap. Barty Jr. did everything in his power to ensure that Harry won and was transported to the graveyard. Harry's blood wasn't necessary for the potion that was to revive Voldemort, any other enemy would have sufficed, but the only way Voldemort could get past the protection of Harry’s mom was to use Harry's blood.
    Another thing too, Bartemius (the father) had taken his son to the Quidditch World Cup, at this point Voldemort had not yet released Barty Jr., so it was in a moment of sudden lucidity that Barty Jr. quietly escaped to invoke the Dark Mark in the sky. The truth is, he did this to scare the other Deatheaters who showed up at the Quidditch World Cup, because they, never risked their lives to find their master or face Azkaban like himself or the Lestranges. Indeed, the Deatheaters we see during the World Cup are those who declared to have been manipulated by the Imperius during the fall of Voldemort (like Lucius Malfoy for example) and who were acquitted. That's why at the end of the movie, we see the fake Moody who looks so eager to know who else was in the graveyard that night. He wanted to know if Voldemort had forgiven them.
    Finally, the explanation for why it’s indeed so strange that the death of Bartemius Crouch doesn’t affect anyone in the movie, is because, in the book, we learn that at the end (when Barty Jr. confesses under the effects of Veritaserum) that it was him who killed his own father without anyone knowing it. Indeed, Bartemius doesn’t normally even attend the second tournament task in the book, he’s under the influence of the Wormtail's Imperius Curse and remains cloistered at home. However, like his son, Bartemius succeeded, soon after the second task, to resist the curse and made it to Hogwarts to try and warn Dumbledore about everything he had been hiding. However, it’s Harry and Krum who find him at the edge of the forbidden forest and when Harry goes to warn Dumbledore, Barty Jr. in the guise of Moody takes the opportunity to get rid of his father in good faith for all and make his body disappear in the forest right after killing him.
    There you have it, all the Crouch's story is fascinating but it would have required 10-minute dialogue scenes, that's why they summed it up with the synecdoche of the lick tongue and why they insisted on the disappearance of ingredients for the preparation of the polyjuice potion in the movie, it allowed, like you, to capture the main plot.
    I would add that THE MOST IMPORTANT THING the movie failed to show is that after the third task, Cornelius Fudge entered Hogwarts with a dementor to interrogate Barty Jr., and the dementor instantly subjected Barty Jr. to a kiss as punishment (because he supposed to be dead in Azkaban), so unlike Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall or Harry, Fudge couldn't get Barty Jr.'s confession, proving that all the disappearances and murders that took place were just a side effect of the plan to restore Voldemort to his full power. So be aware that Fudge and the entire Ministry have no proof of Voldemort's return because Barty Jr. can no longer testify and that Fudge doesn’t believe Harry’s testify (he's too scared to find himself in a world where Voldemort is back again) and he’s convinced that Barty Jr. was just a dangerous madman and acted of his own free will. So, at the end of the Goblet of Fire, considers that the only proof of Voldemort's return is the Harry's testimony.

    Side-note from history - Krum was the name of probably the most powerful Khan (King/Ruler) of the Bulgarian Khanate ruling from c. AD 796 until his death in AD 814. He was known as "Krum the Fearsome" and during his rule he doubled the size of the Khanate. The Bulgars were a semi-nomadic Turkic Steppe tribe - they eventually settled in the lands north of the Danube and give their name to the modern nation of Bulgaria.
    The Quidditch World Cup final was won by Ireland 170-160. Ireland was leading Bulgaria 170 to 10 - so Krum, probably thinking Ireland were going to win anyway, catches the Snitch for Bulgaria and ends the game.
    The old man (Caretaker) that was killed at the beginning of the movie was played by Eric Sykes. He was a radio, stage, television and film writer, comedian, actor, and director whose performing career spanned more than 50 years. He became a UK TV star in his own right in the 1960s & 1970s. He was a frequent collaborator with UK comedy greats including Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Hattie Jacques, Tony Hancock, Tommy Cooper, John Antrobus, and Johnny Speight. Just another example of how great even the "supporting" cast in these movies were.

    Ok so it's been a year so I'm guessing you probably already know this (maybe you've read the books too already), but :
    In the books it's not neville that gives the plant to Harry it's actually Dobby ! There's a whole storyline revolved around house elves, with Barty Croupton's elf accused of casting the Dark Mark, Dobby now working (paid) in Hogwarts cooking meals, Hermione creating an association to free house elves (which isn't of big importance to the overall story but since it's brought up often in the next books it's honestly a neet detail and gives more depth to Hermione's character).
    I get why they did that honestly, they couldn't possibly fit everything into the movie, and as it is the movie is honestly fine and coherent, and adding the entire elf arc would've been too much.
    Anyway I'd really suggest reading the books when you have time. They're really fun and as someone who's read the books after watching the movies, I can tell you this order is honestly better, because the books have so much more informations, lore and foreshadowing that you understand because you know the entire storyline, but also more interesting character arcs for some character who are kind of just background in the movies.
    (from exemple from this book onwards you start having flash-backs about Voldemort and his family.

  • @Elanchana
    @Elanchana Před 3 lety +6

    31:37 There’s a good reason you didn’t know they could do that - it’s because 99% of the time, they can’t. It only happened because of a wand glitch called Priori Incantatem, the thing Dumbledore mutters near the end.
    (I looked through the comments and it seems like no one has mentioned this yet.) In the first book/movie, Ollivander said that the phoenix feather in the wand that chose Harry comes from the same phoenix as the one in Voldemort’s wand. An exact DNA match, if you will. If the two wands go up against each other, their spells will cancel each other out and one of the wands will start running in reverse - possibly the wand of the weakest-willed caster. That’s why Cedric, Frank, Lily, and James made brief appearances, because they were Voldemort’s most recent kills.

    This is definitely one of those movies where you really need to read the book to fully understand what's going on. There's so much more to the maze than is seen in the movie.
    But of course, the Tri-Wizard Tournament is rather weird - two out of the three events can't be seen at all by the spectators. A whole bunch of people are sitting around staring at water, waiting for something to happen. They can't see whatever action is happening under the lake. And then they sit around staring at a large hedge on the edge of the maze, waiting for something to happen. They can't see what's happening in the maze.

    Fun fact: Miranda Richardson, aka Rita Skeeter, is also Madame Tracy in Good Omens!

    Great reaction as always, thank you! I‘m proud to be one of your first patreons and look forward to watch the Order of the Phoenix in full length with you! But I’m gonna do it tomorrow morning I guess - already late here now and I should probably catch a few hours sleep 😅. Thank you for sharing your thoughts after the movie here, too - yes, they get darker every movie now, but don‘t worry, there will always be some happy moments in between. I think they have a good balance wit that, although with Voldemort returned, it’s bound to have a more serious atmosphere now in general. Take care and have a wonderful day! ☀️
