You should learn more about Tim. I've been friends with him since the 90s and I can honestly say he's the genuine article. He's written great songs, he's traveled as many miles as anyone I've known and most of those were uncomfortable miles. You should take a deep dive on Tim's music, you won't be disappointed.

I will add one more thing. This is not exactly like Donovan teaching The Beatles how to Travis Pick while in Rishikesh but I did in fact show Beck how to Travis Pick when we were in Paris. I teach it the same way today. CZcams is of course the greatest guitar teacher out there, but what you do is just get your thumb mindlessly bouncing back and forth on the bass strings, and maybe just do that for a few months or years, while you're watching TV or just sitting on the couch. Maybe use an electric guitar unplugged so you don't bother others in the room, and just keep bouncing that thumb back and forth rhythmically on the bass strings until you can do it like a machine without thinking about it. Then you might be ready to start adding in some melody notes, but it all works best when the thumb is a repetitious machine holding down the rhythm. It takes time, but after a while it will become like a steady heartbeat that is undeniable. Listen to Mississippi John Hurt like Beck did. Mance Lipscomb too. I'm going to visit Mance's grave in Navasota, Texas this June after I play Kerville Folk Fest (my debut!) so stay tuned for that action. Folk on friends.
30 years ago I heard Beck’s Odelay album for the first time. I remember thinking it was the most creative, original blend of musical styles that I had ever heard. Hearing this story of connection between Beck and Tim Easton today has just made my musical universe smaller; loved hearing this interview
Wow, 30 years has seemingly flown by. Odelay still sounds fresh.
"Ive been drifting along in the same stale shoes" Strange Invitation could stand on its own as a straight poetic folk song. Always great stories from Easton.
This channel’s about to hit 100K. ‘Bout damn time.
Beck served me espresso at Cafe Troy, Downtown Los Angeles, where Bibi his mom and Sean Carrillo his step dad ran the bohemian cafe…
So happy about this!!! My husband and I met at the Grog Shop in Cleveland OH (January 2001) at a Tim Easton show.
Tim is a true American folkie and poet that probably has fans in every one of our 50 states!
Cool! I’ll play Riverdog near Oberlin in May.
I have in fact been in every state. That happened a while ago, but I have not played shows in these two states: North Dakota and Hawaii. We need to rectify that!
Tim's Storytelling was "Extremely Engaging" and great history. "Thanks Otis!"
These interviews may be the best things on CZcams. Thanks for doing these.
Thank you both for sharing stories that will better document the music we enjoy.
Edit:
Otis you ability to do an interview and hardly intervene with your own persona makes you one of the best to do this kind of work.👍
Beck's " One foot in the Grave " Album - Classic !! well I Guess All his work is Great !! Thanks Otis & Tim.. Hey Tim - you shoulda went to The " Dead" show Man... ** I Believe Beck's Mom was in with the " Warhol Factory" Crowd...
Great interview. I remember feeling so alienated riding alone around northern Vermont the year Odelay came out just wishing enough people would hear it to make it spread. And feeling so happy Johnny Cash covered rowboat
There was a time that, no matter who I went to see, Tim would be playing. It's to the point that I can't even recall who all I was seeing or where, but I recall Tim always being there in some iteration. I saw him at Sundown in the City in Knoxville, opening (maybe) for the old 97s or maybe it was Shooter, who remembers, but this particular time it was just Tim and a guy playing Doghouse who would NOT pay attention to Tim's ques. Tim would turn to the guy, who was in a world of his own, and physically wave at the guy.... still Nothing. He kept slapping away... That guy was playing some other show in his head. Lol. Great show nonetheless. I still play "Don't Walk Alone" everywhere I go and ppl still ask "Is that one of yours? " which always leads to me telling them the first part of this comment👆and ending with me saying that I learned the song without even owning a copy because I saw Tim play it that often. Maybe It really is just circles all the way down. I'd still rather listen to Tim over Beck but maybe that's just me. Thanks for all the great shows, Tim and thanks, Otis for the vid. Crushing it as always.
Beck is the only artist I can think of that has consistently put out excellent music. I’ve never heard a Beck album I didn’t love.
I think my favorite will always be "Mutations."
@@TimEastonSongwritermutations is my favorite too. Discovered it totally by accident as a kid. So so good
First time I saw Tim he opened for Paul Kelly at Barley’s Underground in Columbus.
Nice chat with Tim. had the pleasure of meeting him at a gig in Joshua Tree. Great music and stories from the man. As always,Thanks Otis.
Found out about Tim Easton through your channel. Have subscribed to Tim's channel since, 3 years or so. Love your music and interviews Otis, love Amy's music and Tim's music too. The 3 of you should do some front porch songs together on your channel. It would be fantastic.
I love Tim Easton. I used to hang out at some of the same dives in Columbus, knew some of the same people. I'm really hoping to make it to the retreat with you guys andTodd Snyder.
And it just kept ringing... There is definitely a song in this great interview/story.
I’m sending a link to every musician I know.
This is mind-blowing.
Imagine if Hendrix could write songs like Dylan.
I chose the "LEVON" lid from the store where Mr. Easton got his.
Well, probably did.
yep.. .east nashville drum shop. great place.
Becks a genius
Thanks gentlemen great stuff. I saw Beck in Denver 30+/- years ago @ a show with about 300 people. I remember Beck came out in a '70s leisure suit and did the jerk around the stage for a few minutes. He also later on performed a solo acoustic set....great one of a kind show. Thanks brothers, you're appreciated.
I was at the Beck show at South by Southwest that year. Back then I had an ex-girlfriend that worked for the festival so I got an all-access pass to any show that wasn't passed capacity. Small world.
Always look forward to seeing your posts. 🙏👍
I admit I don’t know Tim Easton, but I’m a huge Beck fan and this is a great interview. I’ll have to check him out.
I like your gumption. Check out the interviews I did with Beck many, many years ago, when he was on the cusp of fame. They are on my channel.
@@TimEastonSongwriter Will do!
Great interview.
❤ my well missed late friend dear dear TomKell ❤️ told me LA composer David Campbell is Becks dad
Thank you. As he was pinning his story to points in time, I was asking myself where was I then, what was I doing? Music has always been a marker for me, in a way it is the ledger for my personal map of time and events.
Loved this story! Thank you so much guys 🥰 Love from 🇸🇪
Great story. I remember that time well and still love listening to Beck’s early work. Thx
Morning, That was fun!
Love hearing the stories about Beck. I've seen him about 8x over the years and he always puts on an amazing concert. I just saw him again about 6 months ago at MSG and he had the whole garden dancing their butts off including me. I also saw him years ago at Jones beach on Long Island on a bill with Neil Young and a couple other bands I'm forgetting at the moment. I can honestly say Beck pretty much blew Neil Young off the stage that night. I love Neil Young but he was in a bad mood.. Probably cause the crowd is pretty lame out there. Almost his whole set was just noise. While Beck was Funky AF! Thankfully I've seen Neil a couple other times and those were incredible shows.
ah the 90s good times
Very cool history here. Tim is a fantastic song writer and an extremely talented guitar player, I very much enjoy his downloads on Patreon.
Amazing stories.
Saw Beck in 96 I believe - and I think it was at the Kent State gymnasium. It was the Odelay tour. The Roots opened for him - way before I knew who The Roots were. That show is foggy for me, and I don't know why. Becks make some great records though. Mutations is a classic late night/early morning record. That one was always a go-to. It's a dark record that makes people happy - or maybe comfortable. Sea Change is borderline timeless. His early records were great to listen to while washing dishes in restaurants. When I hear Mellow Gold, I see myself smoking a Camel Light and taking trash out back doors.
I was there too.
❤
Mr. Gibbs once again excellent, excellent, excellent work!!!
Love this. Thanks.
Great interview!
Got a couple of couches. Sleep on the loveseat.
Is Tim’s hat a reference to Jim Keltner? If so, very cool….😊
yes sir. it's from a drum shop in East Nashville
Tim has a great YT channel.
So wait, did Tim work on Giltflake with Brad Jones?, cause that album is off the chain!
Beck is a genius
Beck slept in my parking lot.
Thanks Otis.
sorry to say im glad he mentioned scientology its a tough thing not to judge parents or not......Loser was an anthem and Beck showed such promise to do that rare thing of our generation of hyrid music...kurt vile does it pretty well and while he seems a bit self important and or just awkward hes not a cult member cant hang with that so had to forget about beck therefore reluctantly clicked hte video but i know very post by brother otis has mertis - sjocr
Nice story!
