Connections is an engaging word game from the New York Times. Presented with 16 words, you are challenged to find "connections" among four groups of four words each.

This was a fast one for me today. The one I worried about was chestnut, because that's another type of tree, so I avoided connecting the trees until I had eliminated at least one of them. :-) I got purple first, then yellow, green, blue. Maybe you have to be of a certain age to know the phrase, "That old chestnut?"
Trees was the most obvious for me, and realising chestnut went with adage and maxim, I got that one first!
As a 64 year old Australian, I have to say I have never heard the word saw used to mean a saying!!! I got that one last, as there was no other option to go with the other three words. And sorry Doug, even this old Aussie knew it was Washington that supposedly cut down the cherry tree 😂
As a musician I thought Doug would know about ebony. I thought the beartrap in this puzzle for most folk would be " that old chestnut".

Purple was actually my first solve today, but I was only able to get green afterwards. Never heard of chestnut or saw in that context and was totally convinced chestnut would be with the other trees
"Water" could predeed all the words in purple.
That was my call.
Got green and purple today, but "Chestnut" and "Saw" were the ones that really tripped me up today. Those seem like really obscure terms! I've heard the former but not the latter.
I thought one of the categories was "hair colors" with ash, ebony, jet and chestnut.
Very obscure. Should not have been yellow.
Never heard of an Ebony tree. Oh well, I learned something new so that's good! Hot tub was easiest for me.
I’m over 40 and I’ve never once heard “saw” used in that sense. I could probably have gotten chestnut if I had the 3 word context. I know it’s inevitable that they use regional/cultural connections, but it’s a little annoying when they do so for yellow.
Never heard it used that way either.

That was a hard one. I got the grill one but didn’t get category right. I knew trees and old sayings but couldn’t find all 4. Chestnut was always in my tree group. Another day tomorrow!

This was an easy one for me but you know what I’m better at? Choosing which puzzles will stump Doug! These puzzles generally favor certain generations over others.

Yes I remember my Dad popping his head round the bathroom door ( my brother and I were in the bath ) and telling us that President Kennedy had been assassinated - the news broke in the mid evening in the UK. I had no idea what assassinated meant.
Let's just say that I have my good/bad days in Connections, Wordle is my best game as I do the five and six letters. In regards to Strands, I am starting to enjoy this game more. 😊

I got them in the same order you did but I didn't struggle. I burned through two guesses at the beginning as follows:
CHERRY GUM CHESTNUT ASH : Trees (one away!)
EBONY CHERRY ASH CHESTNUT : Types of wood (one away!)
Funny how we solve things differently.
You have to go back further than Grover Cleveland...all the way back to #1. It was George Washington who chopped down the 🍒 tree, and even owned up to it.. 😊
Why did I never koew "One Away" meant you were one item away from the right category !! I always thought it meant one guess was taken away. Smh
The Tree category did me in. I was certain Chestnut was in the tree category and it caused me to end up with 1.25 out of 4. (Taking .25 on the purple since I thought it was Water ___ and was at least in the ballpark, lol)
I also went with water____ for the purple.
I did Blue, Yellow, Green, Purple.
My first guess I included Chestnut in the trees. (I don't remember what one I replaced, Maybe GUM?)
(This is advantage to recording / writing this down... You can go back and see what you guessed.)
Once I got all 4 trees, and realized chestnut, I realized the other 3 SAYINGS words. (I didn't append OLD in my head when hitting enter.)
I was more general with the COOKING FUEL SOURCES. didn't get grill.
And I was thinking more parts of an aquarium, rather than Hot Tub... but close.
I got them but with the wrong labels. Green I thought was fuels for heating a room. Purple I thought was components of an automotive fuel line (including fuel injector).
Automotive engine components is not wrong for purple. It's what I said to myself.
My initial approach was the same as Doug, but I knew the alternate meaning of Chestnut, which removed the distractor and let me get the remaining trees. A very quick game for me, although I didn't identify the other bits as being a hot tub specifically, so I was just thinking of some kind of HVAC system.
Wyna Liu has lost it by putting that category as yellow. These comments here (including Doug) prove that. I got purple quickly, having owned a hot tub in the past. The only difficulty with the trees was ruling out which one went with yellow.
I kept saying grill, yes Doug, only not even once.
Well done, Doug! This was a tough one, and you got it!
