Best kind of exercise and mental stimulation for a blood hound. Training and tracking a hidden old smelly toy while my working GSD was harnessed and on a loose leash while I ran behind her was one of my favorite things to do years ago bc it made her so happy. That joy is even bigger for blood hounds. ❀

Literally number one dog I want. Then a bluetick and a redbone.
Hounds, they are the best dog. Easy as a golden to take care of, provides more than any other dog could.

I used to do that with my shepherd. She'd put her nose down ,and look up 2 feet away.

I found an old basset hound years and while we didn’t have him for many years (he was 12), he demonstrated what made scent hounds so remarkable. Bassets are only second the blood hound, it’s insane to think that the can both smell from far away.

Bloodhounds have the strongest nose of any dog and is something like 1,000,000x more sensitive than a humans 😂

That isn't true, a bloodhounds nose is us about 40 times more sensitive than a human Where did you get a million, a bloodhound would be able to smell someone in outer space if that was the case 😅😅

If you had a bunch of people walk around the the yard after you leave can he still find you? I’m just asking because I’m looking to train one for search and rescue and most of the time the scene has already had a lot of people walk around it sometimes up to 24 hours after the person walked away.

What did you think you were getting across when you commented this lmao. Bloodhounds were BRED specifically for their amazing sense of smell and were used for it for centuries.

It takes plenty for any dog and owner to do this especially that quickly. Dogs cannot read our minds. We teach them to communicate with us and vise versa. The dog needs to understand what we want them to do and that takes a strong bond, work, patience, exercise, obedience training, scent and tracking training and more. It takes a lot of obedience training for a dog and owner to understand how to communicate anything including basic cues/commands. Once they understand what they’re supposed to be sniffing through scent training, they need tracking training to go certain distances without giving up and what to do if/when they lose the scent. Many dogs will give up after a certain time and length, or if another scent crosses the path, or if the scent scatters in different directions, etc. It takes a lot of training to build the kind of trust between each other for both to stick with it, for a dog to understand our cues, what to do if they lose the scent and doesn’t just take off running after a wild animal or
Some dogs pick it up easier than others but it always takes a strong bond, tons of patience, exercise, a positive fun energetic attitude, lots of obedience training and at least basic scent and tracking training to accomplish this and to this degree. Yes, she could’ve made it harder like going deeper in the corn field, or over a stream, with misc distractions along the way, etc. She clearly knew her dog’s strengths and short comings when she didn’t go far into the corn stalks.
But considering all it takes to get any dog to track for that length of time and distance so quickly without taking off, this lady did a fantastic job just knowing how much fun this could be for the both of them. ❀
