  • @rictrexell2118
    @rictrexell2118 Před 6 lety

    I heard that little round ball on the end of the cutter is used to tap the score. That puts micro breaks in the glass to insure a good break. You just lightly tap with it, starting on one end and tapping about a half inch along the cut. I don't know if what I'm saying is recommended by experts, but it is what I was told.

    I've bought these cheap glass cutters, and never do they make that "tearing" sound. The wheel-(blade) just drives over it like rubber on the road. Even when new. I hate them. Just wasted another pane of glass. Guess I need to find a more expensive cutter. Thanks for sharing.

    I'm kind of quietly laughing to myself when you mention the "putty" around the glass, but then I can see that the entire window frame looks like all the putty has fallen out decades ago. Did you reglaze the entire thing while you had it down?
    Also, a quick note about the glass cutter. I have a really nice one (same thing with an oil reservoir) but the lady at the stained glass studio where I bought it told me that none of them at their studio use oil in their cutters. They simply use them dry. Oil doesn't hurt, it just makes for a bit more clean-up. I used to dip my cutters in kerosene. The fun with Kerosene is that it evaporates in about a minute, so it's not too messy.

    • @gardenfork
      @gardenfork  Před 8 lety

      +sooth15 yes, i know there isn't any putty on this window ;) but i wanted to make it more about the measuring and cutting. i have an older vid on window glazing that is very popular, and I have to glaze - putty some windows this week and will make a new glazing vid as well. i was never very good at glass cutting until i started using oil, it may be that for the person who only cuts glass a few times a year, the oil helps. thx again, eric.

    The use of oil is overrated. And is a pain in some cases. I worked jn a glass shop and we had a customer who would order hundreds of pieces. 3 X 6's and 6 X 12's. One time a guy cut them and used oil on every cut. Cleaning oil off of 400 pieces of glass is no fun at all and adds tons of time to the job.

    Two mistakes brother. First of all, you are putting too much pressure on a piece of SSB. Second is you should have "ran-out" the cut right after you scored it. I say this in this way because you were trying to cut it instead of just scoring it. If you want to be good at cutting glass you have to understand 2 things. Finesse and quickness.
