Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated alternative history documentary series focusing on the Mongol Invasion of Europe and asking What if the Mongols invaded Europe. In our scenario, Ogedei Khan doesn't die in 1241, which allows the Mongols to retain their unity and continue their incursions into Europe and Middle East. In 1245, the Mongols under the leadership of Batu Khan invade central Europe leading to the intense battles in medieval Bohemia. At the battle of Olomouc in 1246, the allied armies of the Holy Roman Empire attempted to stop the Mongol invasion ( • What if the Mongols At... ). The defeat here didn't stop the Mongols who were now full of wrath. And although the Europeans were now preparing a Crusade, this wrath will bring them to Bohemia and the siege of Prague will make things even worse ( • What if the Mongols At... ). At the same time, a group of Mongols led by Batu Khan moved south to attack Italy and sacked Rome. We at Kings and Generals hope that you will enjoy this video!

That Louis the IX is the one to participate in the crusade so bravely warms my heart. He never had his dreams of crusades in holy land satisfied, but here, he fought against ennemies threatening the heart of christianity.
Robert of Artois battle at Jena made me smile! His sacrifice shall be remembered.

By the time this series end you would have become experts in the political world of the 1250s (Which also happens to be one of the most underrated), both in this alternative timeline, as well as in our own.

Modern popular historians tend to downplay the amount/importance of faith in older eras, applying modern cynicism to our ancestors. I would think that the sack of Rome presented here would almost certainly be a unifying and enraging force for the remaining Christian lands and probably would have led to immediate rebellions in the Italian states that had previously submitted. I would suspect that the Mongols in Rome would find themselves trapped in Rome, cut off by now hostile city-states in the north and entrenched Naples and Sicily in the south. With no naval support to speak of, they would be starved.

It is all speculative either way. Constantinople was sacked by "fellow" Christians. Intrigue, avarice and politics continued nonetheless. Opinions on taking down the chronically corrupt and scheming papacy would be mixed. The systematic destruction of churches and icons is perhaps another level. Some would be galvanized to increased direct resistance. Others would be pragmatic and think of survival.

The worldbuilding and politics of this episode is just so staggeringly awesome! And with Rome sacked and King James of Aragon died, this will have an immense impact on not just Christian Europe but also on the Iberian peninsula and Morocco. The death of the King of Aragon in Rome might led to the invasion by the Emirate of Granada into the Aragonese territories such as Murcia and Valencia. Of course, Castile might come to Aragon's aid if the ruling elites in Aragon happened to remember that their recently deceased King happened to have his daughter married to the King of Castile. But if they remembered and fell to infighting because of political intrigue, then Granada most likely will gained the significant amount of territories back from Aragon. Heck, the Marinid Sultanate might feel embolden to invade with the pretext to restore al-Andalus. As for Portugal, I have no idea how will this effect the expansion into Algarve by King Alfonso III of Portugal.
And since Rome has been sacked by the Mongols in this timeline, will the Pope of Avignon become a thing a lot faster in this timeline? I sure hoped it did because Christian Europe is in need of the new religious leader fast if the coalition against the Mongols is to be organized.
Also, how will this Sack of Rome have impact on Abaqa Khan's diplomatic missions to Christian Europe? Last time I checked, he tried to ask for Pope Clement IV to call for a crusade against the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Syria with promise that his troops personally led by him will be there to assist them.
Who knows, maybe the new form of Mongol Civil War will happened because of the conflicting interests between Abaqa Khan and Batu Khan. And if such civil war happened, the Christian rulers of Europe, or in Granada's case, a Muslim ruler, will not let such a chance go for sure.
By the way, will King James of Aragon be canonized as a saintly king who died bravely in defending Rome from the Mongols in this timeline?
Edition: While it is possible that the Latin Empire and the other Crusader states in the Balkans might still be bickering among themselves along with the remnants of the Eastern Romans based in Nicea, what happened to Rome will send shocks to all of them. The Romans who lived in Nicea might identified the Sack of Rome as the divine retribution by God for the Sack of Constaninople in 1204 back then. But will they submit themselves to the Mongols and offer the title of Caesar to one of the descendants of Chinggis Khan is still debatable. If they wanted to offer such title to anyone among the House of Borjigin, the most likely candidate is going to be Abaqa Khan for his friendliness toward the Christians. With the help of the Romans, Iranzamin under Abaqa Khan might become an independent nation if the Mongol Civil War between him and Batu Khan actually broke out.

@@georgekolev6247 Thanks for the reply! And I will admitted it, though. I did not think the Mongols will make it pass into Rome like at all. After all, the Mongols usually only negotiated with the "you either surrender or die" type of negotiation an also because I only concerned about Germany's geography and the rest of Europe's politics at the time alone when such crisis happened.
Also, I would like to encourage you guys to do about the aftermath of this Sack of Rome in the eyes of Christian Europe and the Islamic world at the time. Like I said before, the Marinid Sutanate of Morocco and the Emirate of Granada will seized the opportunities to expand their realms while the rest of Europe fell into religious and political turmoils. As for within the Mongol Empire, Abaqa Khan ended up being pissed at what Batu Khan did because his chance to secure the alliance with the Crusader states againts the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Syria was blown away because of his actions against Rome. This will make the crack to form faster within the Mongol Empire and Iranzamin and the Ulug Ulus might go to war against each other, halting the expansion into Europe for the time being and allowing the crusade against the Mongols to actually be organized.

That diplomatic move from Frederick II is literally the greatest thing to have ever been imagined in an alternate history - something so incredible and yet precisely in character for someone like Frederick to do. But burning Rome to the ground would have hit the Christians right in their religious spine. I think that that was a great blunder from Batu. Now, as most of the Mongols are stuck in the heart of Italy, their Italian allies and Frederick will probably turn against them, to exact vengeance for the massacre of their brethren. Burning Rome down really hurt me, I wonder how much the people at that time would have been hurt.

      2. The narration is good.
      3. My favorite character has been Wenceslaus. He has so much potential now as King of Germany, and I look forward to seeing where your story takes him heading the Seventh Crusade.
      4. My favorite episode thus far has been the first where the whole scenario has been set out and the political geography of 13th century Europe set forth in relation to it. I love the intricacy of it all!

Fredrick II saying 'Fuck It' and throwing in with the Mongols honestly didn't surprise me, considering how historically Innocent II kept fucking with him, and his more importance of attention to the kingdom of Sicily and his family made sense.

Fantastic series! I've recently watched the entire thing in one sitting, and this has got to be one of the most comprehensive alternate history videos I've ever had the honour to find! Each battle and action is constructed in such vivid detail, so immersive and structured so immaculately I sometimes forget this is even fiction. Who would think of detailing holdouts on the colosseum that lasted six hours and targeted genocide and refuge of the ruthenians when most would simply say the mongols were overpowered and easily reached the atlantic?

My best guess is that the Nicaeans or the Latins probably made some sort of early deal with the Hordes for non-aggression, non-interference or even facilitated their decision to travel west than south.
Presumably, the Latins or Nicaeans would've already made some sort of deal to prop up their rule, with the Nicaeans on the ascent, and Batu hedging bets, or the Latins leveraging the prestige of their city to allow no opposition to the Mongol forces. Of course, we already saw how THAT strategy went with Rome.
And considering the Roman mentality of the Nicaeans for obvious reasons, I believe they'd have less compulsions with working with eastern steppe armies than the Latins do.
Alternatively, hearing news that Rome was destroyed might've made the Latins, already strangers in a strange land, see the futility of their continued hold on the City.

@@utubrGaming personally i think tha the latin may set up a pope of their own in Constantinople since it's the second rome and all that.
as for the Nicean i don't think they would be happy, you must remember that the byzantine see themself as romans not greeks and till the end they tought rome as rightfull theirs ( and the pope as a usurper) is more likely that they would condamn it while pass it as proof that catholicism is an heresy and that if Rome had been in true roman orthodox hands it would not have fallen (and "accidently" forget about Alaric and Genseric).
finally if Nicea menage to reunite the byzantine remnants it may try to attack the mongols while they are distracted by the crusaders.
