  • Farmer farms 1200 acres in Washtenaw county, Michigan. They own 2 Gleaner L3's and 2 F2's (one is used for spare parts). I hope this area in Washtenaw county stays farmland and not turned into another subdivision.
    The Gleaner Manufacturing Company is an American manufacturer of combine harvesters. Gleaner has been a popular brand of combine harvester particularly in the Midwestern United States for many decades, first as an independent firm, and later as a division of Allis-Chalmers. The Gleaner brand continues today under the ownership of AGCO.
    Gleaner combines date from 1923, when the Baldwin brothers of Nickerson, Kansas, created a high-quality and reliable self-propelled combine harvester. They decided to use the "Gleaner" name for their radically redesigned grain harvesting machine based on inspiration from "The Gleaners", an 1857 painting by Jean-François Millet. Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farm fields after they have been commercially harvested, or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. In the broadest sense, it is the act of frugally recovering resources from low-yield contexts. Thus, with the Gleaner name, the company evoked a positive connotation in potential customers' minds, of a brand of harvester that would leave none of the grain behind. A combine harvester combines the reaping (plus or minus binding), threshing, and winnowing functions into one machine, hence the "combine" part of its name. To that list, the Baldwin brothers' Gleaner added self-propulsion. Earlier combines, the so-called pull-type or tractor-drawn combines, were towed by tractors.
    The original Gleaner design was mounted on a Fordson Model F. It had a retail price of USD $950 FOB at the factory in Nickerson. This design was manufactured between 1923 and 1928.
    The Gleaner was one of the pioneers in self-propelled combines. They were often considered the "Cadillac" of the industry because of this feature and because of their solid engineering. Buescher (1991) credited the design principally to one of the brothers, Curt Baldwin, and explained that it focused on the needs of custom cutters like the Baldwin brothers themselves: contractors who move north with the harvest season, providing harvesting services to farmers. It resulted in machines that were reliable and useful, which benefited not only custom cutters but anyone who bought a Gleaner. The short wheelbase and axle track allowed the combine to fit on a truck. The grain header did not need to be detached for transit, because it fit over the cab of the truck Buescher said, "Since custom cutters didn't know where their next parts supply source would be, Baldwin designed his combine so that it wouldn't need parts." (Buescher's tongue-in-cheek point is that the machines were designed and built well so that need for repairs would be minimal.) The frame was "like a bridge" in its strength. The bearings were chosen with service in mind: large and good quality (to obviate failure) and of common sizes (so that the operator could carry a small stock of spares in his truck, and have the size needed when a replacement became necessary). The Gleaner's exterior sheet metal was galvanized (zinc plated), providing superior weather resistance. As Buescher said, "Baldwin reasoned that most of his combines would sit outdoors. Texas and Oklahoma dust storms have a way of peeling paint off of machinery." As a result of the silver color of the zinc plating, the Gleaner brand ended up having a distinctive color (just as Allis had Persian Orange, IH had red, and John Deere had green), despite the sheet metal not even having any paint.

    I just cant believe how they have access to just such a large variety of fruits , trees and plants. Feels like they live in paradise. Fresh produce right on their door step , surrounded by nature and enjoyed together in a close knit family and community! All the money in the world cant buy what they have.

    I miss the old days of farming, this kind of equipment is what my grandpa would have had. Now we need newer machines to keep up with the extra land. Seems like the old stuff just lasted longer and was easy to work on.

    Nice to see the old AC Equipment still putting in a days work. Really surprised the L3 is working harder, our M2 was easy to spot in the field. The harder you worked, the more it smoked. I grew up on AC Equipment, miss farming more and more every year.

    My L2 and L3 always used a 24' wheat header and an 8 row corn head. I used my machines for 3 years on the custom harvest runs and the only combine that could keep up with my Gleaners was the JD 7700 Turbo. The L2 and L3 had a 48" cylinder while the JD 7700 had 50" cylinder. My Gleaners had no feeder house chains to fool with and the cleaning sieves and fans could blow more air for cleaning. In my experience, the L2 and L3 Gleaners would compete equally with the JD 7700 except for two areas. My Gleaners used less diesel than the JD but the main area where I could always out harvest Deere 7700 was when the JD broke down in the field it was down for hours versus my Gleaner that might take 20 minutes to repair. Both combines were great machines but in all fairness to John Deere, if you were a custom harvester you usually ran John Deere's because of their dealer network.

      The 7700 wasn't made when the L3 was or even the later L2. Capacity wise a 7720 T2 couldn't run toe to toe with an L3

      Back in the L/L2 days, the custom operators ran Gleaners over every other brand and back then Gleaner had a good dealer network with a big harvest caravan that followed the custom harvesters.

    ran AC and GLEANER all my years farming in the 60 70 80 90 and retired 2002 last combine l owned was an N6 great combine also ran 7060 7045 190 185s l now have a hobby farm and collect ACs found your channel becauce of the GLEANER combines!! so l will be watchin!!

    I like the extra fuel tank on the back to keep that rear end down with that 8 row header. The long finger sieves, good clean grain elevator paddles and maybe sped up just a tad and you could really shell some major corn. Those 426 ci engines in the tractors from the d21,210-20 on up to the 7080 were great sounds of power.

    Cool video, and a cool combine. If I might make a suggestion, though, you might try turning the fisheye effect off on your GoPro. I don't know if it will make the videos better, but it might be worth trying. To be honest, the fisheye in this video isn't anywhere near as bad as what I've had in some of my attempts with my GoPro, so maybe you've already turned it off or your GoPro is better about minimizing it than mine is.

    Real question is how does be her an 8 row 3000 series gleaner corn header to mount to that combine and how can it handle it. We have an r52 and it barely takes a 6 row

    I once saw a farmer who's L2 or L3 blew the engine about wheat harvest time. He had an AC tractor - 7030 or so, and broke the tractor down to put it's engine on the combine. The carcass of the tractor sat in the same location for years. Improvisation.

    Don't see too many of those with 8R corn heads on them. Keep an eye on the left inside bearing on the rattle chain. I had to replace the one on mine 3 times in one year. They tend to pull unevenly since the drum is off center it puts more stress on that side. You don't want to smoke it and cause a combine fire.

      On my L2 I never had to replace anything more than the idler bearings for the raddles and I did that when I replaced my worn raddle chains. Only ever had one idler bearing actually go out. Also I don't see how the drum is off center. It looks dead center to me.

    How shit! I have never see that large of a header on a L3 before and it looks like it handles it quite well! Before this the biggest I've seen was 6 narrow row header. It's pretty amazing what those gleaners can do having the inline rotor it's amazing how such a smaller machine can keep up with the larger ones just because the crop doesn't change direction by 180 because of this the smaller ones have such a great capacity I really don't understand why they aren't more popular like they deserve to be. I see a video on the news where the reps say they can completely pull the rotor out I'm ten minutes in reality it's probably closer to 20 but that's stills amazing for maintenance and repairs

      Back in the haydays of Gleaner, the 1960's and 1970's, Gleaner was #1 in units sold and in resale value in the United States. That's from the era of the A through the L2 and until Deutz destroyed them, and in the 1980's Gleaner was still neck in neck with the rest while the others were catching up in features and capacity to match Gleaner.

    This is beautiful to see!
    I sure wish they would have kept the Allis-orange tractors! There was no reason to discontinue that color; a lot of people cringed over that move!
    Today's entire Agco brand started with Allis Chalmers orange paint! And what do the idiots do? They discontinue the orange paint!
