I don't know why they didn't spend episode 1 of Season 5 cataloguing the events of the 6 years they couldn't cover by extending the series. They rushed the season anyway so at least give us a rushed episode where we get to see Rothstein's downfall and murder

Even as the series was airing I knew the initial plan to make each Season cover a year (Season 1 = 1920, Season 2 = 1921 and Season 3 = 1922) was a mistake. Prohibition last for 13 years and the series was always going to end at the end of it; but was was unlikely to make 13 seasons. Had they made each Season cover 2 years of events they could have got away with 6 seasons (one would have to cover 3) and we could have seen Rothstein's demise, the St Valentines Day Massacre etc

Gillian Darmody isn't even mentioned in these reviews. Ultimately, she's a heartbreaking character and Gretchen Mol gives a great performance. I love the ending of this show. It's very close to a perfect ending. Thanks for the reviews. The first two seasons are much better than they're given credit for here.

Disagree. Whilst I don't mind them subverting history and killing Nucky off (he died of old age in reality), I felt they his killer (Jimmy's son) was done to shut up the people who moaned about Jimmy being killed off in Season 2. The show did the right thing by killing off a character (Jimmy) that was wrongly getting too much attention and his son getting the last laugh sent the statement (that they'd corrected previously I felt) that ultimately the show was about Darmody

I'm fresh off my third viewing of the series and the ending makes so little sense to me. It is implied that Gillian was imprisoned and Tommy spent most of his time with the Sagorskys and Richards sister. The ending of season four shows her in a jail cell and the next we see of her she is in a mental ward. Where/when/how would Tommy have any positive interaction with Gillian since the trauma he suffered at her hands as a child? Are we meant to believe that a series of letters from a mental institution spawned this hatred within him? My first viewing I thought it was a good twist and a great parallel, but the more I watch the series, the less I understand the ending. This is also the first time I've noticed that Nucky's child does not die in the flashbacks the way he described it to Margaret; maybe that's intentional to paint him as a liar, maybe not.

Tommy killing Nucky makes the plot come full circle, Nucky's flashbacks paints the picture of how a man ruined three generations of a family lives. Which he himself has PTSD over. Nucky has regrets, but one of the biggest is not doing better by Jimmy and Gillian.

After recently rewatching this series, I have made some adjustments regarding my view point on certain characters. All in all personally, I really did like this Show. I feel you belittled it more then necessary and because it wasn’t your favorite, you kinda provide a weaker then normal review of the series. Overall it can be in HBO’s Top 5 best TV Shows at worst it’ll get an honorable mention maybe at #6.
I use to be a huge fan of Chalkey, however again after this rewatch, I must say, I truly hate that he gave up everything that was important to him, cause of Daughter. He had family, money, respect, resources, he built his life up very lovely, and threw it all away, in the most reckless manor.
Harold had become my new favorite character, I really wished things had turned out differently for him.
Gillian, I previously had a lot of sympathy for. I do feel that it was a cruel way in which to get her to confess her crime and I’m sure it broke the last bit of hope she had for a decent life, nonetheless I also feel it was just for her un-alive-ing that innocent boy.
Oh and lastly, I almost forgot. I could not stand Margaret. She by far stood out to me as a terrible person… She was truly very selfish and only did what her feeling’s suggested her to do at the time.

I felt dissatisfied with the ending where Tommy kills Nucky, not so much that he was the killer but the whole Memaw thing. Tommy didn't really seem to like his grandmother, at parts he seemed afraid of her. There was no indication that he had any contact with her after she was locked away. He struggled to remember his own mother, Gillian constantly makes the point that she doesn't want to be forgotten. I doubt that Richard was telling him as a kid that Nucky killed Jimmy, Richard had no major quarell with how Jimmy died because of the line of work he was in, he was a soldier who was killed in battle in his eyes. Tommy specifically says that it's because of his grandmother. It just seemed like a quick fix to me, dunno, felt it could have been handled better.
Also I doubt that Julia would bring up Tommy so he wanted to throw his life away at 16, even if he was hell bent on killing Nucky, there was plenty of times prior to when he actually did it.

what killed Boardwalk Empire was two things that happened in season 2 and 3; killing Jimmy Darmoty and the Gyp Rosetti storyline.
Producers and writers really didn't want to kill Jimmy; he was a fan favorite with tons of potential plot lines, but Michael Pitt was a very difficult actor to work with and they were very close to firing him on season 1.
Gyp Rosetti storyline in season 3 is where they really started to lose viewers; viewers wanted to see more Lucky and Capone, but they wasted so much screen time on a brand new character that they ended killing anyways at the end of the season.
They tried to get back on track on season 4 and showing us more of what we wanted to see, but by then most of the viewers were already gone.

Couldn't disagree more. The show was supposed to be about the life and times of Nucky Johnson (Thompson in the show). Jimmy, a fictional character, was getting was too much air time and character development. The only reason he was regarded as a "fan favourite" was because he was eye candy for the female fans. The Thompson bodyguard role was done much better by Owen Slater, who had his own side-stories (bedding Margaret and being disloyal to Nucky that way) but it never felt like he was a main character like it did with Jimmy. Season 3 with Gyp is a bit movie-style cliche, in the sense Gyp was the typical "baddie" that arrives at the start of the season and is killed in the last episode but his acting and portrayal of the character was brilliant.

His relationship with the Patricia Arquette character which felt more like filler. The waste of the Chalky White character, who the writers just gave up on. The confusing conclusion of Richard Harrow, which was one of the more compelling characters on the show. It just seems like everyone died in a few weeks span. I agree with the narrator that it seemed like the showeunners and writers wanted to quickly wrap everything up and move on to other projects. Such a shame because the acting was terrific and this could’ve been one of the all time best series, up there with The Sopranos and Breaking Bad. Like that series and I was very surprised when it abruptly ended.
Another series that ended abruptly and it didn't have to because it was there was a plethora of information many of the characters had actually lived and they could follow it right down to the end. That series was Deadwood the Marshall, "Seth Bullock," played by Timothy Olyphant, actually fought with future United States President, Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War. Al Swearington, played by Ian McShane, was one of the central and real life characters, who owned the Gem, a Bar/Brothel and was the hub of the town. In short I swear again was a gangster pimp in the gaming, dope booze and broads. That's how he made his money and very successfully I might add.
Before he became Mayor of Deadwood, Sol Star was a business partner with Seth Bullock, they owned and operated the town's General Store.. Other real life Deadwood characters were, Empresario, E.B.Farnum, A.W. Merrick, Charlie Utter, & George Hearst, father of newspaper magnet,, Randolph Hearst.
Some of the characters were fictitional as The thin, blonde prostitute, "Trixie Star," played by Joanie Stubbs. Her character represented the bleakness of life for women who came out West and found there was nothing for them but prostitution.
There was a plethora of plots characters that could be pulled from real life for the Deadwood Series, it could have gone on for years and years like The Sopranos. Deadwood was a gold mine I think it came out around the same time as a Sopranos I don't know if it was before or after, I think it was slightly after, in any case, I don't know why they pulled the plug on it. Maybe you could do some research and fill us in on that I for one would love to know the backstory on all this.

When I Google “best TV drama series”, Boardwalk Empire usually does not make the list. However, many far inferior shows make the cut. I’m not sure why Boardwalk is so underrated. In some ways, I enjoy it more than the Sopranos. For one thing, Boardwalk had the guts to kill off the protagonist whereas The Sopranos didn’t give us a real and satisfying ending.
There were a few things I didn’t like about Season 5. I hated the way Chalky’s character was killed off. He went out like a b*tch and I found it very uncharacteristic and just lame overall. I didn’t think the flashbacks were necessary. We didn’t learn anything new. They do, however, make Gillian a more sympathetic character as we get to see things from her point of view.

It's too bad we didn't start with Rothstein, Lucky/Lansky, Joe Masseria, and the forming of the commission and get to the early 50s. Along the way, we could have met Frank Costello, Albert Anastasia, Carlo Gambino, and Vincent the Chin. I would have loved for any show to have featured Tommy Lucchese, the ultra secretive godfather of the family featured in Goodfellas. It almost seems like maybe the crew wanted to build to that but the show didn't do well enough in the first seasons. It seemed like the Republican Party bit got cut real fast after season 1, lol.
