- The district of Bermondsey lies in south east London, just south of the River Thames around, and to the east of, Tower Bridge.
Its name is believed to be derived from 'Beornmund's island', Beornmund referring to an Old English personal name. The River Neckinger, one of London's subterranean rivers, runs through Bermondsey. We see what remains of this river shortly after the 5-minute mark.
The street, Shad Thames, was home to the largest warehouse complex in London in the 19th century. This includes Butler's Wharf, a Victorian era shipping wharf. Many of the buildings appear much as they would have in Victorian times, at least from the outside. This includes the prominent writing painted straight onto the brickwork - a typical style of the time. The walkways spanning Shad Thames were originally used to roll barrels between Butler's Wharf and the various warehouses.
The walk also takes a look at Tanner Street and Maltby Street, the latter of which is home to Maltby Street Market. This originally came into being in 2009 following a dispute regarding the rising rent at Borough Market just to the west. Although closed on Mondays (the day of filming), the market sells an eclectic mix of street food.
The football club, Millwall F.C play in Bermondsey. The area known as Millwall is actually north of the river on the Isle of Dogs near Canary Wharf. The club moved out in 1910 due to limited space for expansion, ending up in New Cross. In 1993 they relocated again, this time to Bermondsey with the opening of The New Den. Millwall have one of the fiercest rivalries in all of football with West Ham, who also don't play where their name suggests, but in Stratford. Long story!

London is absolutely the best city in the world!!!!
That's true
I think the same
How lovely is this - my wonderful Bermondsey Thank you so much. I'd love to go there again
I used to run Bermondsey adventure playground in the late seventies and early eighties. Those old warehouses off Jamaica Road and Tooley Street smelled wonderful as a lot of them had been spice warehouses until the sixties in some cases.
You didn't walk through those Wharves at night - not safe but a good welcome from the factory staff during the day. My uncle worked in the spice factory and came home from work bright yellow from the turmeric ( even his eyeballs were yellow. How I loved Bermondsy - once known as the Larder of London.
I can't thank you enough for this delightful trip. IMy secondary school was in Tooley Street- a tiny victoriana school wedged in a tiny alleyway between the NAAFI warehouse and a doss house where the author of Down& Out in London& & stayed.
My great uncle Jim Dibley was the Bermondsey Scout district Commissioner. He lived in Druid Street
So great virtual downtown walk tour. Thanks for sharing
Hey, thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this great walk video. I was in London in 99 and did some self guided tours from my lonely planet guide with dear friends I met in the hostel. I no longer have the guide book and sadly lost contact with those friends. I looked back at those 20 year old photos I took of this area and the distinctive buildings but sadly had no idea where it was other than somewhere along the river. Today your video gives me the answers and brings tears to me eyes with happy memories. You're a legend! I hope your channel keeps growing and please continue on with your priceless walk videos.
Wow, thanks for the kind words! Always nice to hear about past memories like this. Hope you have a good day. :)
My Bermondsey

Thanks, I appreciate it! :)
Never been in the UK but now i’m sure that will be the first place i’m going to visit there.
thank you very nice 👍
Interesting walk. I presume that a lot of the warehouses are currently posh lofts?
If by posh you mean selling for about 2 or 3 million pounds, then yeah exactly that!
I want to live in Shad Thames!
My parents lived in Devon Mansions
Very nice, but so sad cuz silen
i still don´t understand why they like this dark brick so much
London was bombed during the war so I don’t know what was rebuilt. These streets look very old.
I'd say as a general rule, if there's nice architecture in London then the Luftwaffe missed it!
I wont to go to London.
