  • Jim Bachor's artwork has been filling the streets of Chicago - literally! Dozens of his mosaics have been appearing around the city, dotting the roads where potholes used to exist. Lee Cowan goes with Bachor as he adds a little color to Chicago's thoroughfares.

This is beautiful...but for a 10hr work a-piece- of-art just for the city to cover it at some point in time, is probably not practical. Maybe he should work with the district's parks and rec to transfer his work in the parks (millennium park for instance) or walks/bike lanes. Tourists as well as locals would love his work and we can enjoy it for a lifetime. I love the crunch! It's so pop-arty.

Vesuvius hes not removing the gravel from the bottom or anything. The cement chunks he is putting in will get water under them and it will freeze. the ice will expand end it will come loose. if the city wants to actually fix them then they have to chip it out.

About 5 days ago I spent a day leveling a private road that leads into a driveway using "random assorted asphault", I asked my buddy: "what would you use to fill pot holes" he said "I would use this stuff". After that day went, I think he is right. That asphault stuff is really good at leveling the road and by the looks of it, you could use it to fill pot holes as a really good temporary fix and it wouldn't do any more harm to it than the rain erosion is currently doing to the pothole (by making it bigger). You could just fill potholes on public roads with aspault (rocks) with a shovel for a temporary fix, then when the official people who fix the potholes on public roads come to fix it, all they really have to do is scoop it out with a mud shovel and put it in a bucket, fill the pothole with cement or do whatever it is that they do to fix the pothole, and then take bucket of asphault with em'. This could work. See the problem here is that there is so many potholes and not enough people fixing em' (which demand direct action). We need to create a mechanism which allows ordinary people to do non-harmful temporary fixes. One example would be the official road repairers to suggest publicly (on the news or whatever) what ordinary people can and should use for non-harmful temporary fixes. Like they would say: "if you want to fix roads yourself, atleast use this stuff instead" ex: asphault. Anyways, I am just afraid that the conservatives are saying "don't fix it yourself" because they are coming from an irrational position of keeping the existing jobs alive and well to the point of preventing potential productivity. I am not a leftist, but I agree with the anarchist left ethic of _direct action_ . Productive direct action that improves the community should be welcomed rather than trying to keep problems alive and well in order to save jobs, it shouldn't be about that, it should be about making the community better in freedom of association and direct action, that is the type of free-market I support. As long as you are not intentionally trying to harm people, then yes, your volunteering efforts are welcome.
