The Problem With Unturned

  • Unturned is an amazing game that I have spent countless hours playing and enjoying, but it has changed. While it is still a great game, it no longer feels like a survival game. The focus of Unturned is now becoming a PvP game instead of a survival game, and I talk about how that has happened in this video.

    You know what. I am in the same boat. I started playing when it was an unpolished, buggy mess, but still a blast. Then early on 3.0 hit and it was my favourite game on PC at that time. Me and my friends made so many great memories on it, and now I find it to be full of toxic PVP players, who don't really care for survival, but for PVP combat. I feel as though Nelson has just gone with what the modern community seems to like, rather than what he would want to add to the game himself. It's a real shame. I remember when i was a kid, i didnt had money for minecraft or rust, so i selected unturned for being free, and for being atractive (the video on steam mostly). So i whould scavange for itens and clothes for bandages, and guns for my arsenal. I made a base in a house with a fence (in witch i made a plantation that the zombies turned out to outsmart the fence, so i coverd it with the barbred wire) I often got impressed with little (like when I discovered that the canteen could get infinite water and that I could place a door, A DOOR) and when I was going to sleep or quit playing, I found a bed in the game and placed it in my base, and (literally) every time I whould log out, I left my survivor laying down on that bed (witch in my imagination, I whould think he would sleep, and in the next time I would play again, my survivor whould "wake up" and I would play another long day of looting. I returned playing for a day and it feels strange with all new mechanics and stuff, but I should go back to vanilla server, go back to the city I made my base, and eventually get nostalgic again, I feel these days 😢

    Children typically don't appreciate the small things and just want to get right into the meat of the action.
    Edit: This is the same reason why faction servers fell out of popularity in minecraft and servers these days now run with formula of quick and repetitive minigames.

    I try to only play Vanilla. When I play TPA servers, you end up fighting one guy and then 4 people teleport. I remember a time when you were better off making friends then enemies. I remember when finding a server with slots was difficult. I remember the hype of Washington. I remember when you would leave a fight, because it wasn't worth losing gear. I remember when there wasn't clans, just players wandering alone, trading when they found each other.

      I do agree with you but I have a problem with the “clans” part. I’m not in a clan but me and my friends play together talking or helping each other. That’s why I believe the game is so fun. Survival games are really boring when you don’t have friends to play with. But there is still a small community of people who will spend time collecting and building. Me and my friends both agreed that 10x loot or pvp servers were too easy. And my friend had barely joined while I was a 2014 player. I also played a server that had no zombies or pve and about 5 minutes in, I left.

    It sounds almost exactly like what's happened with Minecraft. Younger community moves in, and the focus shifts from survival to pvp. Even in places like factions servers, people concentrate on raiding and hunting players, turning Minecraft into Planet of the Murder Hobos. It's probably a common trend with open world survival games, really.

You aren't worried about exploring areas or making a house. You are worried about finding your next meal. Wondering if you are gonna eat today. Wondering if you will even be alive tomorrow. A true survival experience will not be a fun one.

    You make some good points, and I agree with you. I just feel like the majority of the problems you explained are due to the servers that are available to play on, not necessarily how Nelson has made the game. I feel like it's down to some of the players who've made the game something it's not really supposed to be. It's great that we have all this freedom with it but the game has basically been turned from an apocalyptic survival game into a doughnut shop rp simulator, and it's all down to the servers that people make available. I recently opened a whitelisted server which focuses heavily on survival, I'd totally recommend something like that to anyone who feels the same way as you do in this video.

      Nylex +1 I am on the Whitelist. The server is unique. Offline raiding isn't allowed and people follow the rules. It is hardcore survival making it actually fun. Mods make it more fun. You don't spawn with GPS so you don't know where you are. KOS isn't allowed. And the best part is stealy wheely are rare af. Cars don't spawn crazily which promotes players to hunt for stuff for a makeshift vehicle. The community is great.

    This happens with most “hardcore survival games” with pvp. Everyone starts off casually exploring, playing with friends figuring out how survive, finding and interacting with other players. Everyone slowly learns how to cheese or make the game as easy as possible so that they can solely focus on finding people to pvp with. Sucks that it always ends this way with these games but until someone who makes these games realizes that we need good and in-depth non pvp mechanics to play and mess around with or pvp will be the only thing people will care about. Base building, art creation, gun customization, maybe make crafting more in depth, etc. just need more shit to fo and give me a reason to do said shit

    I still remember playing Unturned around 2015, it was my first experience playing with my friends (as it was the first time I got a PC that could handle it.) and we definitely had fun, the thing is, we had a pretense of "survival zombie game" and we remember always having to anticipate being frightened or pressured by the zombies and also the fact that there are other players. It kind of saddens me to see how much that shifted, and we do usually attribute these types of game shifts to new major communities, right? My only problem is that, well, what DOES define the game in general? Today's/During this video's Unturned? Or the Unturned many years ago? I think a lot of problems we do have with games we got to love early is the fact that the devs might be looking for something else, or worse, they come by a different perspective for their game which changes how it plays and deviates from the original game.
    The only personal experience of this is with GTA 5, It's a vastly different game but it went through such a player shift, the game went from grinding then being able to have absolute fun by car races and police chases, to dimwits finding it fun to take their air bike over LS and gun down every living player "for fun" as if it was the only point of the game.
    We can definitely attribute this to the shifting of the player population from one type of audience to another, accelerated by the fact that old players who enjoyed the old environment will hate this new environment and leave.
    I hope that we still get the Unturned you mentioned that focused on the survival and especially zombie aspect because at this point I don't think the game has it's identity in Lobbies where you find mere satisfaction in being OP. Now, I totally get why the younger viewers and players like this, they grew up being set in games that have this clear progression where at some point nothing is hard in the game, but my problem with that (Maybe it's just a generational thing...) is the original fun and thrill of the game is gone and now I'm treating it as a sport or a competitive ranking and not as a zombie survival game. Even though it doesn't seem that way a lot of the philosophies of todays' gamers usually like to align with that.
    Hence I drove off and switched to Simulators or RPGs or games that have an absolutely clear path to what kind of experience you will have and not drive you to immediately pace out the game to quickly get above, the fun isn't there anymore of the game itself because it ends up that players just flock the game and enjoy it because they found a stable source of dopamine from being a highly skilled player, I'm not saying no one deserves that point, they totally do, but I think if you took out the main unique points of the game that make it such a unique game (Zombie survival with blocky graphics and Multiplayer) then you are still striving for the same thing and able to maintain the same status quo. I want the game to still give me the thrill of the ever-lasting zombie horde and the rush of getting above the zombies and winning over the other players rather than going on and having a typical day in the base maintaining my dopamine generators.
    Edit: I definitely did not phrase my point perfectly but I hope it gets what I think across. And note; I have not played Unturned since the aformentioned 2015 first time experiences with friends.

    Generally, young kids means no money,

      EJB9 Unturned is unoptimized as hell. At first I didn't really realize it, but my computer with a GTX 1060 and i5 could run the game at ~60 fps at medium/high graphics. But then when you don't have a dedicated graphics card, even if you have a strong I7 processor, Unturned drops to like 20-30 fps which should not happen with the graphics of this game running on an I7. Nelson said optimization will be better on 4.0 so, meh.

    This reminds me of Minecraft a lot and I'm not talking about the graphics, but how this game has evolved.
    I used to play Minecraft beta 1.7 and some earlier versions and it was a great, pure survival where you could do basically anything. Beta 1.8 implemented a lot of new things that were really cool and everyone was happy about it, but I already felt that something was not right because so much have been changed. And I wasn't wrong, a few updates later more and more people were realising that Minecraft is more of an RPG than survival, which is probably great for the new players, but older players(that played before September 2011) can clearly see it's a different game now.
    Unturned was pretty much the same: game wasn't very good at the beginning, but it was super enjoyable and nobody cared if it's polished or no, it was just fun. Since then I haven't played a lot, but I can see that new patches and tons of new stuff pretty much...maybe not ruined the game, but took away it's charm.
    In both games developers wanted to make good, big changes, but they completly changed the whole game and it wasn't good for many players.

I play now on the Nylex Whitelisted RP server and the good majority of the players that go to apply try and force a military/bandit background, and every time I go onto a public server, people ask if I want to raid/PvP with them, you cant talk to anyone anymore on any server without getting robbed or shot. As Nylex said, the term RP has gone from Roleplay to 'Rob People', and unfortunately its true these days.

    • @Artrysa
      @Artrysa Před 6 lety +2

      I never said realism always makes a game better. However in survival games this is 9 out of 10 times the case. Because most of the times these games are centered around some kind of realism. Also the weight in Skyrim was not meant to be realistic. Can you carry 400 pounds? No, it was meant to limit the player so they couldn't pick up every single thing. Otherwise you'd be sitting on over 10k in your first 5 levels.

    Here's how I'll put it.
    I've been around a long time, 2,300+ hours. I've seen this game change a lot.
    PvP has always been apart of Unturned's identity and basically defines why it's a such a fun game. The survival aspect of Unturned has always been shallow. Name one thing that Unturned does better than any other survival game. I've never seen Unturned as a survival game, I've seen it as a sort of whacky free for all open world murder fest with survival aspects. That's what it is, that's what it has always sort have been even way back in the 2.0 or 1.0 days. It didn't need to be a good survival game because it's charm was in player interaction. Whether you like it or not Vanilla PvP is unturned
    Vanilla
    V. A. N. I. L. L. A
    That's where this post shifts
    Rocket ruined pvp. In a vanilla setting, the smartest player would thrive, not the most mechanically skilled. Dying mattered. There was risk involved when dealing with players, there was just risk in general. You played smart because you didn't want those hours of looting, pvp, and survival to go to waste. Under the blocky graphics, goofy little gumbi-looking zombies and the 10 yr old squeakers you had killed a couple of minutes attempting to roast you was a game that was rough around the edges, surprisingly deep in execution while remaining simple to understand, and just plain mean to you if you decided to be stupid. That's the game that charmed me into putting 95+ DAYS of time into it. Vanilla pvp is the Unturned I remember and love and Rocket....is not that. All the thought and risk is gone. If you die, you type /kit military and you are back in business. It's basically the Unturned equivalent of a TF2 mario kart server. It feels...wrong. That type of gameplay has it's place I would be lying if I had said I have never enjoyed playing a rocket server. But it's not what I play Unturned for. The sad part is that I can't even find a Vanilla pvp server with either 12 people on, or less than 200 ping.
    The Unturned I know and love is effectively dead and all I can do is wait for 4.0.

    • @NeonTheWolf
      @NeonTheWolf Před 6 lety

      Colonel Crossfire it was only a PVP game since the beginning because thats how you chose to play it, it was a survival game in the beginning where you could make friends or make enemies, help people in need or take advantage, etc. back then you could actually play the game the correct way how Nelson wanted us to play it but now all the needy kids ruined the game by using kits and item/vehicle spawners that drown out survival servers which is how this game died. The only way to actually play the game now is to play singleplayer because survival servers ceased to exist at least until 4.0 if 4.0 does anything to help

    Recent changes are mostly new maps with diffrent crafting recipes for each map thus i think at some point they should rework each map to introduce crafting stations making the game harder, but also allowing you to craft items from other maps. It would introduce a new step in the progression (that sometimes makes you use more materials since every maps crafting recipes do not cost the same some maps have more material requierments, but also give more space, or more structure health) The servers you play would be more diverse since the bases would not all be the same.

  • @AddisonMorse
    @AddisonMorse Před 6 lety +8

    I agree that the authentic survival has died out on most public servers, but I stopped playing on those a while ago. Currently, the only time I play is on my own private server that I designed to be a fairly realistic and challenging experience. That's my personal solution.
    *edit*
    I've also been personally working on a mod that puts a lot more crafting and stuff into the game, with the idea of also making a map with virtually no loot spawns: everything would be based on what you can build. I haven't gotten too far into development yet, as I'm inexperienced with the tools for making something like this, but it seems like an important and interesting thing to try to do.

    i really liked the game bc it was so much fun playing with friends and surving
    this is what i think they should add in 4.0:
    - make zombies stronger everyday
    - make new zombies (can only be found in specific places in the map)
    - events that spawn zombies everywere (so you have to make a base to defende )
    - more missions
    - and maybe make a couple of places with tons of zombies in order to get rare items
    and with those items you can kill a very strong boss (and that will complete the last mission) something like that
    (sorry if my english damaged your eyes reading this)

    Fun fact: Unturned actually started as a small zombie apocalypse game on Roblox named "Deadzone". In the early days of Roblox this was a front page hit and I have such good memories about it. The creator DeadzoneZacZack (A.k.a Nelson, don't know if I got his user correct) eventually left Roblox to make Unturned in the Unity game engine for Steam, the game was entirely free to play and one of the Steam free-games-you-must-own.
    I have such great memories and Nelson was a pretty nice dude, he'd add ideas that were suggested to the game and generally really enjoyed working on it.

    @storm_epidemic Před 6 lety +4

    I honestly couldn't agree more with these points.
    I really feel that the way Unturned has it's maps set up is also how the game has changed. When every house is so large compared to 2.0, there is more loot. The player base wanted bigger towns than 2.0, so combine the more loot from larger houses and then having more of those large houses, it made exploring towns you come to completely pointless because you got everything you needed from the last towns. In 2.0, the houses were small and were easy to quickly loot for the one or two items in each house, which made it all much easier and honestly I prefer the smaller towns like 2.0. Items are just far too easy to get in 3.0, which I believe is a large issue.
    Although, I also feel the amount of content in the game itself also muddled 3.0 for me. In 2.0, there were rather few guns and items. When there are so many different items that function differently in your inventory it makes all of them have less value to you, its the same issue games like Minecraft and Terraria have where by the end of the game you are carrying so many tools you might as well have been losing inventory spaces permanently as you go through the game.
    I played on The Driftless and it really brought back survival feelings of 2.0. I may be biased (since I made the thing :P ) but I sincerely enjoyed the much larger map and spread out locations. It felt like you were actually having to save materials just to travel across the map, much like 2.0. If 3.0 had more spread out locations and larger maps, I almost feel like the higher loot system may work out. But alas, Unity has many issues with larger maps which is why I am excited for 4.0, also the improved engine makes more things possible than before. However, I also feel an issue with 3.0 is that there isn't a good vanilla map that plays on the game's weaknesses and puts them into a context where they could be seen as strengths. PEI and Washington are not even slightly viable singleplayer survival maps. Russia and Hawaii (while very well made) I feel are too redundant with too much to do, that if you die there is almost no point in restarting as you just lost all your high end loot you spent days collecting.
    Those are just my opinions on it so take it as you will.

    • @ARandomUser6969
      @ARandomUser6969 Před 6 lety

      honestly the military locations on washington are to much and modded survival lasts longer than plain vanilla and its very boring just grinding for hours on vanilla so i guess there has to be some sort of compromise somewhere to fix the issues

So pvp didn’t ruin the game but the plugins that let u spawn stuff ruins the suspense when the stuff u spent finding for hours is at risk.

    I started out being a Bukkit server admin/wannabe back in 2012 but now I can fully develop my own plugins and soon SMPEarth will be brought to it's knees (they seriously have only 2 notable plugins which I could make in a week). I plan on making a server that incorporates huge elements from Minecraft factions, Rust bases--raiding--claiming, RuneScape(2007-09) map and lore/quests, Unturned nostalgia, and I can do it all with Java. I guarantee YOU could make an Unturned server that YOU develop to make a more permanent, Minecraft-like save state to the game. A perma-base everyone keeps their survival going, and a raidable base for the PVP/economy. This is a great example of a better mechanic, can't totally lose your stuff like Rust, keeps players in the game long-term because they literally have a reserved space on your hard drive.. With being a server admin the ceiling is as high as the developers, but as a developer the ceiling is infinite. #LearnToCode

      You speak the truth, I used to love pvp before bullet drop, it single-handedly ruined the game for me. I haven't really played it since. I remember when bullets actually hit what you aimed at.

      AManNamed2 Honestly tho, why would anyone want realism in their game if it ruins the fun? Bullet drop is by far the dumbest mechanic I have ever heard and I never even played Unturned.

    I like the game just the way it is, I sneak around collecting items, exploring the maps finding out about the outbreak. I am NOT going to get bored with the way the game is right now for a LOOONG time. There are a lot of people out there that say that "oh, well this needs to be different and that should not be like that" or some other things. I do not want to see very many more drastic changes to the game any time soon. And if Nelson does make 4.0 way different, than I hope I can come back to 3.0 to play the Unturned I know and love.

  • @SweetFried
    @SweetFried Před 6 lety +5

    I completely agree, all the servers nowadays are kit servers or kos (kill on sight) servers that give no freedom or challenge at all. Pve servers for me just don't fit right, everyone has bases that they don't use anymore just scattered around the map and a lot of loot spawns are blocked off. When I play Unturned I only play singleplayer. Nelson should add easy to make LAN servers or free private servers.

    I remember playing in a server in that one snow map, i build a cool ass base, 2 floors, 1 living room, bedroom on 2 floor, 1 storage room on first floor, i worked my ass of to make metal walls, and then I left, next day I lost everything because someone glitched inside my base with the /tp, i instantly stopped playing that server

    This was a very educated discussion that touched only on topics that actually existed. Nice. You get a sub and a bell ring. I used to play unturned all the time, and back in the day that was easy. But one day, my friends and I were looking for a server to play on. And all we found were kit servers. Every single one.

    Well I think the Raiding overhaul was a step towards the more survival style as before it,anything could destroy structures. Now players have to grind for the Charges,Dragonfangs,Ect. Also I remember hearing somewhere that Nelson was taking Unturned II into a more survival focused game,which hopefully will bring back the older good members who don’t complain over everything and Unturned will be amazing and populated again.

    I personally really like /home and respawning at my home but otherwise I like everything being vanilla. I don't dislike PvP but I prefer PvE. My favorite server was a PvE server that had a purge every Friday where they turned on PvP. I'd always avoid playing on that day but I still appreciated having the ability to PvP every once and a while if I wanted to.

      with out pvp the game would feel dull and like not being able to fight over resources is stupid but you don't have to make a survival game only have pvp and pvp servers only are the worst likei wanna have fun with a clan or raids not just fightin over loot for nothin

    The thing I liked the most about 2.0 was how challenging this game was. Like I was soo proud of myself for building my first base and being able to settle down for the first time. It was actual challange. I even made a server for me and my friend on the world I built the base, becouse even though I had a base I still found that there is a challange to this game. Rn When you play singleplayer, you do everything you had to do in like an hour and there is no challanges left.

    I hate kits, sandbox and other things like that! Now im only playing on Froshington Vanilla server on Russia. (For me its the best map in unturned) But there's one problem... Its just... easy! I preffer hardcore! There's no hardcore vanilla server! Only easy! I'm actually preparing a server like this, but making it is expensive, very expensive, so unfortunately I'll probably need to scrap this idea... You're right, I'll share this video to all my friends!

    I played Unturned since mid 2.0 but i quit during 3.0 because i thought it was too hard. Such a game requires grind and that in turn requires a lot of time and dedication.You grind to get rare loot but you lose it in a easely in a pvp confrontation. Unturned seamed lacked a casual scene so the community made up by creating these fast, easy to play kit/home/arena servers.

    • @iulianion5565
      @iulianion5565 Před 6 lety +1

      And there is also the fact that you need to take care of so much stuff: hunger, thirst, radiation, weapon and armor condition, ammo, health, gas for your ride (cold on Yukon) all while trying to find good loot and exploring. Then when using weapons you need to account for bulletdrop travel time and accuracy all while not wasting valuable ammo.

      True. It got to the point for me where I killed anyone I saw on sight due to the simple fact that they were a threat to me alive. Too many times have I lost hours of progress to some guy camping behind a tree.

    I thing the same way as you do but my friends like pvp more then survival and they think that survival is kinda boring, i can agree with then at some point do to the fact that the maps are too small and the zombies are way too easy to kill but when i know there are some people roaming around the map ready to hunt me down when i have a bunch of loot on a vanilla server is scaring me, cause i don't wanna lose my stuff and at this point it's all about pvp.

    The farming and rainwater is mostly used in the winter maps I believe. It's been a while since I played but I think you can't grow crops in snow so you need lots of farm plots and rainbarrels.... you could go loot but becoming self sufficient in a winter wasteland is almost a little game in itself.
