    Thank you for your terrific video, it is just super. I remember having to shorten my future sister-in-law's wedding dress (at a time when CZcams tutorials were not in existence 😮). It was the most nerve-wracking job as I was not an experienced sewer at the time. I approached the task by measuring how much it needed to be shortened, cut it and then tried to create a rolled hem. I did get the dress done but I think I aged 10 years in the process and swore never to undertake anything like that again. Now, after seeing your video it makes so much sense. Great job 😁

    This is exactly what I needed! I am making a circle skirt from scratch with a chiffon top layer that I was really struggling to do a rolled hem on. Thankfully I cut the skirt too long, so I should have enough fabric at the bottom to do it this way.

    Oh my goodness!!!! I hem A LOT of these and this should work perfectly. The problem with even just stitching one time, trimming, then rolling is the material stretches or frays and it is too easy to make an uneven or wonky hem. Hope this works when only hemming the front of a dress that angles to the sides, therefore creating a bias section.

    • @HouseofMissSew
      @HouseofMissSew  Před rokem +1

      I’ve not tried only hemming one side but hopefully the method will work for you 🤞 I find it’s so much easier than trimming first and have had no issues with hems stretching out of shape (which would happen if I did a normal rolled hem approach!) ☺️

      @@HouseofMissSew I don’t know you , you don’t know me , I don’t know where this idea came from but I want to say thanks for sharing this simple quick and clear way of doing this hem on these dresses. I have sewn dresses before (long time ago with patterns and watching sewers since I was a kid) but fixing dresses with these materials have never been an easy thing to do and I had a dress I never fixed because I was afraid of damaging the dress 👗. Well , I started with a dress I’m planing to wear tomorrow and thanks to you I did it! 😃 I’m ready to tackle the other dress ☺️ Thanks again for sharing this for free. 🙃

    I’ve got to do this to my wedding dress which is identical to the one you are altering only white. I’m going to have a little less to take off but I need as much as possible because I’m going to make a tiered short sleeve with the off cut.

    Can't wait to try this as I am beginner to all of this. Do you have any tutorials on shortening shoulders on formal chiffon dress?

    • @HouseofMissSew
      @HouseofMissSew  Před rokem

      I’m sorry, I don’t have any shoulder shortening videos. Depending on the style you can unpick the previous seam and re sew this at the correct position. Depending on the layers it can be a little tricky.
      For a quick fix just stitch the seam where you need it to be (without any unpicking) and then sew the part of the strap that is excess along the sides to hold it in place. I did this for my own bridesmaid when I had only a few hours left before the wedding to fit the dress correctly!

  • @jacihope
    @jacihope Před 2 lety +6

    I feel like I could do this!! Have a bridesmaid dress I need to hem and have a tight budget! I do some sewing, but never a hem before! Are you marking and sewing on the outside or inside of the dress?

    • @HouseofMissSew
      @HouseofMissSew  Před 2 lety +5

      You can do this! Just take your time, measure and cut carefully. 😊
      I’m marking onto the right side of the fabric, then folding along that line so the wrong sides come together, then I stitch on the right side. Once the fabric is trimmed I fold the fabric and sew from the wrong side to make sure I’m stitching along the edge of the fold correctly.
      Good luck 🤞

    Oh my gosh you are a lifesaver I told a friend I could hem her garment I had no idea it was a bridesmaid dress just like the pretty teal one in your video lol seriously I would have told her just have the shop you bought it from hem it but here I am lol. I have a question I noticed on her skirt towards about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom on both side hems of the dress are stay chains/ tack chains, its like holding the chiffon and satin together so they don't separate a lot?? should I add these on to the new hem or just say forget it and not worry about it? Its like when you buy a trench coat or really nice garment and they tack the pockets closed (does that make sense?). Thank you so much for your video I really appreciate it. You now have another subscriber for life :)

      You can leave off the thread chains/ swing tacks as the layers will probably stay in the right place without needing them. But, if you want to add them back in, I have another video showing how to sew a thread chain. You can find it here:
      czcams.com/video/RsYbwPUBL8M/video.html
      I hope that helps ✂️😀

    Thank you so much for your excellent tutorial. I sew a lot but have almost zero experience of chiffon and agreed to take up a prom dress 🤪so really needed to watch your video. I had already purchased a rolled hem foot thinking I needed that but it looks like you did it with a standard foot? Do you have any views on a rolled hem foot (like/dislike) or do you just think it’s not necessary? Really appreciate your thoughts, thank you!!

    • @HouseofMissSew
      @HouseofMissSew  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you for such wonderful feedback! A standard foot is best for this method. I’ve hemmed chiffon with a rolled hemming foot but it can be more fiddly and depending on your experience of using the foot and working with chiffon it can end up creating a wavy or stretched out hem. For slippery fabrics, particular those on the bias I find a standard foot easier.
      I’ve made 2 other videos on how to do a rolled hem with the rolled hemming foot and one using a different method and a standard foot. Let me know if you need more help ☺️

    thank you for this lovely tutorial!! two quick questions from a newbie sewist:
    1. what is "right side" and "wrong side"? is right side the outside of the garment and wrong side the inside?
    2. how do you "back tack" at the end? my machine only pulls the fabric one way (brother SE600 I think) and I don't want to break a needle by attempting to get it to move backwards without any guidance first haha

    • @HouseofMissSew
      @HouseofMissSew  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for your feedback ☺️
      You’re correct, the ‘right side’ is the outside of the garment and ‘wrong side’ is inside the garment.
      Back tacking is to take a few stitches back and forth to secure the stitching at the start and end of sewing. Your machine may have a button to press to secure stitching.
      Hope that helps 😊

    Thank you so much for this video, you just saved my life! I have been recovering from an injury and I haven’t had money or time to get anything done for my brother’s wedding. Not cutting the hem is genius, and definitely easier for someone like me who hasn’t sewn in a while. I’m curious if it’ll still work okay if I don’t have an iron? I’d get one if I could afford the extra spending, but funds are low from being on medical leave.

    • @HouseofMissSew
      @HouseofMissSew  Před 2 lety +12

      Thanks for watching 😊
      Since the lining is already shorter on the original dress, I decide how much the outer layer needs to be shortened by and then shorten all layers by the same amount.

    Thank you so much for this video! I’ve always cut before making the hem and my machine would grab the threads of the chiffon and bunch them, making the dress look terrible. Does this technique stop that?

    • @HouseofMissSew
      @HouseofMissSew  Před 5 dny

      I’ve tried both ways and it’s much easier to cut after you’ve stitched. You have more control over the fabric and it’s easier to handle. I think this method would avoid the bunching that you describe 🤞🤞
