This song is iconic. Even today you go to rural villages in the north and play this song, people will remember it. Not bad for something made almost 47 years ago.
There is a trivia regarding kishore kumar too. Initially he argued with the lyricist for giving complicated lyrics in a different dialect. Then he asked to bring paan so that he can chew while singing and make certain chewing sounds. He also warned musicians that whole song will be recorded in only one take so if anyone makes mistake while playing instrument, they will have to sing it. He got filmfare award for his renedition. He was known to be an eccentric genius.
He was the only singer, actor, producer, director, composer, lyricist who excelled in all disciplines. Later farhan akhtar tried his hands in all fields but not to his level
This song was the main attraction for the masses. It played a huge role in the film's success, and is credited for generating extra revenue due to the "repeat audience". Even today, in Indian weddings, it is played by the band.

Perhaps the best crime action thriller in the 70s with a great emotional core at it's base. Even the Srk remakes couldn't recreate the emotional core that this one had

The tamil remake movie of Don is Billa (1980) starring Rajinikanth. Vethalaya potendi would be the replacement song of this song in tamil. Please watch that song. It was composed by MS Viswanathan.
Why this song is relevant not just a filler?
Varanasi(old name: Banaras or Benares) is one of the world's oldest(from 1200 BC) continually inhabited cities. It is situated on the bank of the Ganges.
The Paan(betel leaf) from Banaras is very famous in India. The character Vijay is fond of that paan. the lyrics "The boy from the shores of river Ganges" is true for Vijay and Amitabh Bachchan himself. Vijay speaks in same dialect used in Banaras and so is in the lyrics.
The best ever song, this one is the original DON movie which is 1000 times better than any copied version.

Still I would make it more easy for you, see him in films where he is sharing screen with all time best actors and you wouldn't find a single instance of him being overshadowed but you would find him overshadowing them in some cases. You can watch Sarkaar ( Kay Kay menon) , Dev ( Om Puri) or Piku ( Irfan Khan) and see for yourself
