- The artificial intelligence revolution is just getting started. But it is already transforming conflict. Militaries all the way from the superpowers to tiny states are seizing on autonomous weapons as essential to surviving the wars of the future. But this mounting arms-race dynamic could lead the world to dangerous places, with algorithms interacting so fast that they are beyond human control. Uncontrolled escalation, even wars that erupt without any human input at all.
DW maps out the future of autonomous warfare, based on conflicts we have already seen - and predictions from experts of what will come next.

Thanks. Already watched, was great!
It's a bit like overwhelming the radar of a country to then throw hundreds of drones in a single wave attack and simple cobglfuse the enemy of the intended target through sheer numbers before striking it out of the blue.🤯 it to me is genius when targets what we couldn't otherwise attack.

"Fire and forget" is a pretty old term within modern self-guiding munitions...

But those still have human in the decision making loop. These may not. 📡
Didn't it originate with the Sidewinder missile in the late 1970s?
@@soyad9840 funny since it existed in ww2 allready
Fire and Forget normally is used to descibe systems like the Javelin AT.
You lock on to a target, fire the rocket, hide or run while the rocket climbs to a ceratin distance and come down again to strike the tank from the top.
But for an atgm the operator need visual first but this drone is using AI 🤙🏾
@@jama5191 yes, but 90% of the time fire and forget does not refer to loitering munitions, but to ATGMs or maybe MANPADs.
This migth change in the future, but if someone at this point of time uses the pharse fire and for get he is not referencing AI controlled weaponry.
@@Trollportphosphat okay but still needs identification before striking it 🤔
It is the wrong term. It should be "Launch and Forget" as autonomous systems can identify targets, lock onto them and decide when to fire. All you have to do is decide how many to launch and where.

The scenario of "Flash wars" reminds me of the book "Fail safe" in which a war by accident happens.
China would never adhere to a ban. Their military has already said they will use banned weapons if they felt it gave them an edge. Banning weapons is wishful thinking unfortunately. When nation states are fighting for survival they will commit any crime required and simply apologize after the war.
just look at ww2 every nation commited a bucket list of war crimes and most didnt even aplogiced for it.
Everyone tried to evade the Washington Naval Treaty. A ban is not going to work.
A World going madder every day.
The old saying is so correct...'if peace were to break out tomorrow, the World would be at War the following day'.
I find it particularly funny that these drones are flying aircraft and a specifically Target air defense units.
ehh the Air defence cost more to shoot down the Mini harpys so it would a waste most times to even attempt to take down the mini harpys unless using smaller arms
the whir of that drone swarm is chilling
There is kind of vague spectrum of definition of AI
from the learning AI via environmental changes to adapt to them and react or simply algorithmic programmed protocols to do or do not react to changes in receiving new data inputs
Marketing kills vocabulary.
Happened in the past to ”Turbo”, ”Quantum”,”Atomic”, ”Titanium”, etc.
One point which to me becomes crystal clear through this example is quite another one.
Not because of AI, but weapons manufacturing countries selling to other countries are meddling in the affairs not only of those they sell to, but also in those who don't buy but are attacked by them later on. Not only Aserbaidschan won here, but Israel or ISraels weapons manufacturer won.
The message from the weapons manufacturer is clear, if you don't buy our gear, you will loose.
The message from Israel is convenient silence as well from any other country not pointing this out.
This is how our systems of renewal work. We do not need to wage war ourselves, aslong someone buys our weapons we can keep inventing new once.
This is what Terrans using scourge looks like.

Swarming reminds me of the famous novel "PREY" by Michael Crichton.

@@TomNook. ya. There should be a movie on that book.
it's not very far away... especially if these drones can be hacked
Germany did develop a loitering weapon a couple of years ago. It was developed by Rhinemettal Defence. I think it was called the KZO.
I find this terrifying!
Don’t worry, the ~14.000 nukes in the world are equally deadly when controlled by human intelligence (HI).
Exactly what anyone not US, Russian or Chinese should be thinking.
Yes, human beings are acting like animal beings.
There is no point of having stealth anymore. Just have large numbers its small enough to be stealthy
Not necessarily true then production is the determination of succeeding which means factories are soft targets.
No, current sensors can find drones ... and even small birds/insects.
Laser systems that don't work against big military hardware are VERY effective against targets this size.
The problem is telling threats from wildlife.
AI drones will act just like wildlife - hiding in plain sight.
So what do we do? Shoot every insect or bird that flies by?
Also, lots of flying things can walk or crawl. So what if it crawls past defense systems? Then jumps up to attack ...
The problem wont be stealth, or camouflage.
The problem will be hacking.
Whoever has the best hacking, owns everyones drones.
The real arms race will be hacking, and when an AI becomes the best hacker...
US Airforce drones use max stealth technology. They look like small B2 bombers. Small things have very limited range.
Cheaper to win in this world of asymmetric war, computing speed and capacity is the real war, will the financial system release enough capacity for the military? I wonder.
AI technologies should be Included in the arms control list.
My AI us smart enough to evade it 😚
Literally the whole video is just the argument in terminator 3 where the dad of the gf of John Connor says that he wants to be in the loop and that he can't fully trust the machine. The messed up part is if you don't develop the ai then it's suicide bc enemies want it too.
perhaps the kind of system overload scenarios wouldnt happen if the military arms industry wasnt so much focused on profit but rather stability and peace.. oh wait.. how naive of me
Pandora’s Box paradox.
Once invented/inventable, any superior technology with warlike uses must be developed. If you don’t develop it, you will be quickly owned/eaten by any tribe/nation/organism that does.
Ask the Chinese about gunpowder.
Or the Ukrainiens about negotiating away nukes.
And M.A.D. isn’t just a human sickness. Evolutionary arms races have been run for hundreds of millions of years before we came on the scene.

Every AI is a gangsta before Covid-19.
The automation of warfare will lead to even higher abuses from rich nations. They'll be able to increasingly impose their will and interests on others and also can lead to endless wars. If your side is not losing lives, what incentive (and popular pressure) will there be to prevent and stop wars? As always, the military industrial complex and politicians are the only ones benefiting from these scenarios.

Cant the enemy just use a EMP to fry the circuits of the drones?
Enter: swarms.
@Oo Kk "A nuclear electromagnetic pulse (commonly abbreviated as nuclear EMP, or NEMP) is a burst of electromagnetic radiation created by a nuclear explosion. ... In military terminology, a nuclear warhead detonated tens to hundreds of miles above the Earth's surface is known as a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) device."
I could name a few that could do that
Man made Emp is fairly inefficient, mountains can block them, they're relatively low yield, and most effective ones require a nuclear detonation... they're also costly and you can accidentally fry your own equipment...
@@smtx2117 They don't need to be huge, just an old microwave magnetron and some tin foil to reflect the beam. There is no weapon that is stronger than the human spirit. I will die on my land and I will die with a smile. NO VACCINE.

pop a nuke: specifically designed for maximum EMP, as opposed to thermal blast. (watch 'em drop like flies)
You can easily shield them in a bunker. Also, you pop a nuke and then Russia will pop 7000 nukes - 100 on every major western city.
Then watch your equipment getting fried in that EMP too.

Yes link AI to military hardware like tanks, and make better tactical drones, what could possibly go wrong?
Their range is low. So you will deploy into an area - say a 10km x 10km geofence. Within that zone there will be false positive and false negatives. It will be messy when they take out your kid sister because she was holding a long pole like object.

There were a whole slew of movies from the 80's about this topic...Peacekeeper, Terminator, Short Circut, Cyborg, ect. They all ended badly and it sucked to be human. Maybe some of the younger programmers and developers should revisit these films, start with Wargames starring a young Matthew Broderick.
I hope they name it skynet.
'An exclusive first look at a UN Institute Report on the risks of autonomous weapons. On some future battlefield, a military robot will make a mistake. Designing autonomous machines for war means accepting some degree of error in the future, and more vexingly, it means not knowing exactly what that error will be.'
Google search engine
It's very important that machines are still controlled and decided by humans but some might not wanna do that and it's very dangerous
Human control is arguably the most dangerous aspect of an autonomous weapon system. You could program a robot to follow a moral code, the geneva conventions, and to minimize civilian losses. A human sitting at the control center thousands of kilometers away will probably not hesitate to sacrifice some innocent lives for "the greater good". Don't forget that an A.I can't be evil if you don't program it to be, while there are plenty of horrible humans.
Some will make the AI fully dependent to save themselves from legal trouble
That's an alarming concept. A war started between nations of humans by the actions of their respective A.I. combat systems.
The A.I systems would probably still get orders from humans. No government would risk having an A.I system that just does what it wants.
@@Ruzzky_Bly4t Agreed. Some kind of command override or kill switch would only be common sense.

They never said that.
These drones remind me of stargate drones
wow future generals are gonna control drone swarms like Starcraft or something
What’s the difference between these and guided missiles that have existed for decades ?
Serious question, I really don’t get the difference.
Guided missiles have the target coordinates programmed in at launch time by a human. Just artillery with a twisty trajectory.
AI drones are launched toward general area, with only vague descriptions of the target, like ”anything remotely tank shaped, or emmiting radar.”
Ultimately, a microchip gets to decide what goes BOOM.
guided missiles are guided by humans if we talk about anti tank missiles or sam systems.
I am wondering why no movie has been made on this concept by Christopher Nolan yet?

Did your rocks travel 7000km below radar, then loiter for 4 hours till it spots a specific vehicle and then launch a JDAM at a specific man, before returning to base for refueling?
@@michaelnurse9089 "fire and weapons" aren't autonomous. Maybe they should've used the term loitering munitions because those ones are. Well, at least the Israeli Harop is fully autonomous. Fire and forget weapons still needs human input to pick targets and fire. The javelin missile is a fire and forget but it needs a human to still see a target and then launch the missile

The defeat of the luddites with state violence was our last chance to stop this and it failed. They even got luddit to be used as an insult rather than a hero.😢
The wiring of drones will be the new air raid sirens

The one with the biggest military, military budget, military industrial complex and the most military bases in the world needs to be first against these weapons. It would be suicide for any of the other nations in the world to agree to a ban if the elephant in the room does not step up first.
Nobody is asking for a ban. They want rules. Rules on design (e.g. no launch and forget assassin drones), production (e.g. disallowing corporations to stockpile private armies) and use (e.g. you may only use them once you have been invaded by a substantial enemy force and sustained x amount of damage).
10:10 Tie fighters!
Made me wonder: Drones in the sky, Boston Dynamics &Co. on the ground?
Even if your adversary has millions of them, if you can effectively make them immobile by jamming them. Not making them work that is the best attack
