The future of modern warfare: How technology is transforming conflict | DW Analysis

- The world is entering a new era of warfare, with cyber and autonomous weapons taking center stage. These technologies are making militaries faster, smarter, more efficient. But if unchecked, they threaten to destabilize the world.
DW takes a deep dive into the future of conflict, uncovering an even more volatile world. Where a cyber intrusion against a nuclear early warning system can unleash a terrifying spiral of escalation; where “flash wars” can erupt from autonomous weapons interacting so fast that no human could keep up.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tells DW that we have already entered the technological arms race that is propelling us towards this future. “We’re right in the middle of it. That’s the reality we have to deal with.”
And yet the world is failing to meet the challenge. Talks on controlling autonomous weapons have repeatedly been stalled by major powers seeking to carve out their own advantage. And cyber conflict has become not just a fear of the future but a permanent state of affairs.
DW finds out what must happen to steer the world in a safer direction, with leading voices from the fields of politics, diplomacy, intelligence, academia, and activism speaking out.

Reminds of that one episode in Star Trek: Voyager where the crew encounters fully autonomous robots piloting space ships and fighting each others long after their creators have wiped out each others..
Was that Voyager or Stargate Universe?
Yes! And the Ray Bradbury story “there will come soft rains.” Years after California was demolished by nuclear attack, a smart house is still doing everything all day every day. Well since no actual soldiers are killed during the clash, it might make it easier for countries to back down. If soldiers were to be killed in a border clash, it makes it harder for the countries to back down since they lost citizens. It is interesting to see how this will play out.

Luckily, the major players have so many nukes swimming in the oceans, they really don't have to worry: they could destroy the enemy, even if the enemy nukes a few cities first. And even if they nuke the enemy first, then they themselves get nuked into oblivion. In other words: No need to rush armageddon on either side.
Therefore: All the nuclear submarine powers should sign a treaty that they launch no nukes until a nuclear hit on their forces is comfirmed. It would be a great way to prevent trouble from false alarms

The real scary factor is that no government can afford not following the pace, whether they like where it’s going or not.
I've been wondering that no government can afford TO follow the pace, now that we are ALL already financially consumed by having to adapt to climate change, not having clean water and foods etc. E.g. I love to eat beef, but I can't justify what it's costing our water resources - I _have_ to not contribute to putting us a risk over what it truly costs our resources to create cows.I may not be able to explain this right, but I think all humans are going to be so taxed by the cost to simply exist, there won't be resources to sacrifice for conventional war.

Still can’t comprehend that Israel is ranked 20th in global armies but clearly technology wise coming right after the top 5 power countries and in some fields even more advanced than China and Russia
Military power is more about how long you can stay fighting rather how hard you can hit (explains why U.S. could not bring down Vietnam. Israel can certainly pack a punch, but with a small economy, the cannot sustain 2 years of full-scale war against even a middle-sized country like Turkey because Turkey has more resources
Also many lists of power count numbers of aircraft, tanks etc and not quality. For example israel and iran both have aircraft but an israeli f35 doesn't = 1 old iranian plane
There's no question about it. A drone must be attached to human handler just like any weapon.
Although this is a remote controlled weapon the rules of engagement/ military rules surely apply to those who think they can just kill autonomously.
There will never _not_ be a human in the chain of command. Machines are designed, built, and programmed by humans, and in the case of AI, they are trained by humans as well. Humans are still making the decisions, they're just making the decisions ahead of time. Every constructed device is an extension of the designers' and builders' personalities.

Somewhere out there, someone is sitting and laughing with his ak47 on his lap.
Well, Germany's position on autonomous weapons is also more complicated because of their definition of lethal autonomous and automatic system. German representatives usually argue that you cannot prohibit autonomous weapons because they are not developed today and won't be in the near future. Basically the government says it supports a ban of autonomous weapons but practically is doing the opposite by using this argumentation.
A soldier with a gun operating behind enemy lines, out of contact with their headquarters, is _also_ an autonomous weapon. The threat has not changed.

When you talk about kamikaze drones and you bring up the term "fire and forget" you misunderstand what that means, its actually refers to something else that has been around for a while now over 20 years in systems like the Javelin missile. It doesn't mean you release it in the air and forget about it what fire and forget means is that once a soldier locks on a target the weapon will keep itself on the target without further guidance.
Not necessarily, the "fire and forget" in question with the loitering drones means once it's programmed and out of the launcher it will be fully autonomous. Also the same with javelins, once fired the human no longer has control but with the drones the targeting is also autonomous

@@itzikashemtov6045 If you say you are worried about the spread of drugs and you sell them, you are a hypocrite. Isnt my point obvious? What you wrote is irrelevant to my comment.
Overall Germany has stricter export rules than most other countries, just for example Germany banned arms sales to Saudi-Arabia in 2018, but other European countries like the UK and France protested as they want to continue selling weapons to Saudi-Arabia.
Germany was thus forced to accept that it would deliver components (like engines) to the other European countries so that they can finish their existing contracts with Saudi-Arabia.
You are the hypocrite. This is about proliferation of AI in weapon systems, not weapon systems as a whole. Nobody says a country is not allowed to arm itself. It's about technology overtaking the international mechanisms in place to regulate armed conflict (which is not going away anytime soon). Also, as has been pointed out, Germany has strict regulations on foreign arms sales. In fact German manufacturers have lost out on contracts and less regulated countries have filled the void.
