- “It was a careless mistake”.
Nadhim Zahawi, who has just stepped down as a Tory MP and was sacked as Conservative Party chair in 2023 over failing to declare an HMRC investigation into his tax affairs, has admitted his “mistake” cost him £5m.

£5m tax being owed isn’t a mistake, it’s intentional avoidance of tax.
I wonder if the same grace would have been given to say someone who was self employed and they overlook say £10,000
@@markrhoden68 exactly 👍🏻
Seemed to easily overlook the offshore shell company he used to do it. The fact he thinks that isn’t a matter of public record perhaps hints at how easily he can pull the wool over everyone’s eyes.
@@markrhoden68carers are being fined thousands of pounds because sometimes their part time earnings went two or three pounds over the threshold for the carers allowance. And the government knew it was happening because of slight fluctuations in people’s wages and allowed it to continue for years.
Pinocchio told more truth.
Why is he running around free?! People in the UK have gone and go to jail for a lot less than that!
Imagine abusing benefits to the tune of 500 quid...
@@mrdaveythebaby
Forget £500 you'll get prosecuted if you didn't declare £50
Were you to discover any of these folks had paid £5m too much - EVEN ONCE in while - this would seem a slightly more plausible weary tale.
Exactly, criminals the lot of the them
A shocking MP! Disrespectful and a liar!
This man more or less sums up the criminal Tories: lies, arrogance, greed, lack of regard for other people, egoism, gaslighting, treating others as idiots... we could go on. YUK
What nonsense, actually his fine was for being deliberately careless, he knew exactly what he was doing. And the tax expert who exposed him who he tried to silence with a SLAP lawsuit thinks he’s announced he’s stepping down because it’s about to be revealed that Zahawi lied to his own lawyers.
And all this fuss over 1500 from Angela Rayner
Exactly! Classic deflection. She slips up on a pittance , he cons a fortune!
@@AndyRossism she probably hasn't done anything wrong. But the tory croosk spend their time finger pointing to cover up their crimes.
Why is she any different 😕
@danielsellers8538 the level of scrutiny is disproportionate.
@@danielsellers8538 Because a few Tories are desperately hoping that she might have made a mistake in her tax affairs which might have cost the exchequer £1500-£3000 and have badgered the police into reopening an investigation which they have already closed for lack of a crime being committed. Zahawi was investigated by HMRC, the National Crime Agency and the Serious Fraud Office without any party encouragement and was found to have deliberately avoided paying £3.2 million of tax and was penalised 30% of the amount as well as having to pay the tax owed. At worst Rayner is bad at filling in forms. At worst Zahawi should have got five years for fraud.
“We all make mistakes”. Wow. No shame, no apologies. Just “we all make mistakes.” 🙄🤦🏾♀️.
So sick of the endless scandals and lies.
He decided not to run for office, when the public found out about the 5 million he didn't report.
You don't make a £5 million mistake. It was intentional. A blatent tax dodge. I can understand a couple of thousand mistake but not 5 million.
Finally, these guys are getting the trolling that they could have been given a decade ago.
5 million tax issues from an incredibly wealthy man is a careless mistake .... pull the other one - but some tiny possible amount by Angela Rayner is an excuse for bullying by his party. Really, what hypocrisy. And no challenge from the presenter????
Amazing how these revelations about the defecting Tory MP only come to light once she has defected. Almost like the Tories were happy to overlook these allegations whilst she was a Tory MP but now she is a Labour MP she is fair game. Hypocrisy and double standards??
If Buckland is telling the truth then he covered up those actions by Elphicke for years and failed to declare them to the parliamentary inquiry. I guess there are questions to ask of him.
This chancer belongs in prison. Many people are locked up for crimes far, far less serious than trying to cheat the country out of millions of pounds worth of tax.
Well you know that the CORRUPT PLOT TICIANS are exempt from prosecution.
This needs to be investigated by the police. If it's not then the police need investigating. Time for this sort of thing to end.
And after wasting taxpayers hard earned money on a investigation it'll all be brushed under the carpet and forgotten.
People like him need the hammer treatment the guy in the film Casino got for cheating at a card game.
Cowardice rather than face the electorate
He’s a crook.
Sex offenders and con artists = tory party
The boy from Baghdad who came to the greatest country on earth and made good defends sending other boys from Baghdad to Rwanda!
Breath taking.
We dont all make 5 million pound mistakes. Only a crook makes mustakes that big and usually the musrake us deliberate.
Feeble journalism - he was on a hook and instead of reeling him in you were content to let him wriggle off the line.
What a coincidence. Just as his lawyers have landed in hot water for attempting to intimidate Dan Neidle.... 😉
Only £5m...just for him small change and so easily overlooked.
Looking forward to this getting as much 'discussion' on Times Radio as Angela Rayner got . . .
So...now he can concentrate on pretending YouGuv are the next Cambridge Analytica who can rescue to Tories.
Settlement means he probably didn't pay the full amount.
No, he paid the full amount plus £5million. That’s the reason why it’s even worse than he’s pretending, he tried to avoid tax, lied about it and got caught… he then spins it as an honest mistake.
Obviously, was told to step down... as former Chancellor of the Exchequer and a tax cheat should be imprisoned... HTF is he still walking around as someone who said he made a mistake, the only mistake he made was being caught !
You know who is not allowed to make mistakes… carers… who are stepping in to care for their loved one with complex care needs - when if they were cared for by the local authority it would cost thousands of pounds more
MP's and their 'accidents'!
TORY Mps
Worm!
Steal a bottle of water, go to prison. Avoid paying £5 million tax, just pay it back when you fancy with no consequences. Welcome to Britain
The man is a criminal, and like all criminals, the mistake he made was getting caught.
How he isn't in prison is beyond me... oh wait, he was chancellor of the exchequer when they were settling this... nothing to see here, folks.
Strange how they admit a mistake when exposed as crooks.
"Memoires of a £5 mil tax dodger." What a page turner
A crook says corruption is fine as long as you are a tory. They'll cover it up for years.
My accounts are off shore but buy my book....GR
Who's gonna pay for heating hia stables when he steps down from becoming an MP?
He's walking straight into the position of chairman of the Very group.
Another company that I will never buy anything from.
It's alright he made a mistake nothing to do with his lawyer possibly facing being struck off
Sunak and decency do not belong in the same sentence..
HMRC say it was a careless mistake. any average bloke and it would be deliberate.
Zahawi is claiming it's a "careless mistake".
HMRC has fined him £5M on top of the tax he owes.
His only mistake was getting caught
Only mistake he made was getting caught.
Stuuer much?? .. He's another 'tory loophole' tax-dodger who's decided to 'chicken run' but he's in big trouble and Starmer won't let him off the hook.
Pants on fire. Pinocchio. Children tell and listen to better fictional tales
No value thick skin only mistake what about the thousand expenses you claimed no conscious
He even turns the episode into an opportunity to plug a forthcoming book!
HE WOULD STILL BE THINKING OF STANDING IF HE HAD GOT AWAY WITH PAYING HIS TAX, THEY JUST KNOCKED 200 QUID OFF MY STATE PENSION BECAUSE I LIVE ABROAD, THEY ARE EVIL
When you make a big mistake do not pass go you go straight to jail .
Meanwhile, carers who were incorrectly overpaid (sometimes by as little as 3 quid a week) by the UK Government are currently being threatened with jail if they don't immediately pay the years of overpayment.
🤣but but Angela Raynor something something 😅
Bye..... You won't be missed.
A crook. Not reported by Daily Heil?
Fiddling trying to hide it
Compare to the plight of unpaid carers who inadvertently go a few quid over the threshold and then have their lives destroyed and are viewed as criminals. It's OK to make mistakes if you're rich and powerful.
It was just resting in my account... 😁
Torys gotta Tory LOL
So Angela Rayner would need to at moat what she failed to pay 50,000 time to acount for his "mistake"
Poor Zahawi....shoulda called Harry Redknapp, these so called politicians thieves & vagabonds😂
If Bucklands quote is true then wasn't he withholding information from the parliamentary enquiry? Stranger the interviewer didn't ask such an obvious question...
This is the one that was discovered, how much more they didn't find yet.
There is nothing 'careless' or 'mistaken' about failing to pay a tax bill so big it was subsequently settled at £5 million.
No doubt a very excellent person. He comes over as being totally genuine and thoroughly decent. He will be a great loss to Parliament.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Always an oversight when politicians are concerned isn’t it?.
‘Careless’ 🤥
It didn’t “cost” him £5 million. That was what he owed and the fine imposed.
“It is disturbing that two experienced members of Parliament did not see fit to declare their active membership of Le Cercle at the time they were a member of a key select committee, the functions of which clearly overlapped with the discussions of Le Cercle, which is a shadowy body which concerns itself with foreign affairs”/“Transparency is a central issue in British politics and I would have expected these two MPs to have shown greater leadership in letting the public and their constituents know their important links with Le Cercle.” - Sir Alistair Graham, the former Chair of the Commission for Standards in Public Life, 2019
With holding 5 million pounds, a mistake is possible corruption!
I forget about 5MILLION tax avoidance everyday, what am I like?.Tut,tut.People or the "riff raff" get sent to prison for fiddling a £100,why isnt HE going to prison.?
To clarify Zahawi's feeble excuse, a 30% penalty is the upper end of 'careless' errors, but also the starting point for 'deliberate' errors.
Being charged 30% isn't the mark of innocence he's painting it as.
Disappointing interview. Why was there no question on his legal bullying to stop any investigation of his “mistake”. If I were of a suspicious mind I might assume a deal was made prior to the interview to avoid this seedy part of his story.
yougov, undeclared chairmanship role at ‘Le Cercle’, his home heated stables, the ‘safe & effective’, & now some seven figure small change 😂 you should trust this bloke !
This was the "mistake" that Zahawi instructed his solicitors to threaten tax lawyer Dan Neidle with liable over.
What a nice man 'eh?
Awful interview, just unsubscribed
‘Sister company….’ Is that relevant? He seemed to place a lot of emphasis on it
Made many mistakes? I'll say.
Only £5m, just for him small change and so easily overlooked.
Oh he's made more "mistakes". I just bet he has. 😡
Further clarification of Zahawi's tax misinformation:
'Careless' doesn't mean what most people think, when used in tax matters.
To most of us, careless means bumping our shin on the coffee table, putting a hot cup on a polished surface.
Whoops! How careless!
In tax terms, 'careless' means a failure to take the expected level of care, but without leaving enough clues that we are confident we could defend a higher penalty for deliberate actions, if it went to tribunal.
If Zahawi thought his shell company arrangement was lawful, he could and should have disclosed it to HMRC, and asked for advice.
Of course, if he had asked, he would have been told that's not lawful, so he didn't ask, and is using the 'Nobody told me I couldn't' defence.
Shouldn't he be in jail, then 😮deported
Thank god he's not a working class woman who may or may not owe one three-hundredth of that amount. Then he would be in trouble.
Good job he didn't cross the floor or it could have been a scandal!!!!!
Of course we've all managed to miss the odd £5m. 🤣😅
Amy Lockedupnsekure HMP
Mistake, 5 million pounds mistake?
YEAH RIGHT 😏
Well I’m convinced. Zahawi for PM.
Politics is boring in the years that the Tories aren’t doing a regicide.
No-one cares.
will someone pay for my stables
Zahawi is one of the slimiest of them all "there are always bad eggs, just look at Natalie Elphicke...but I have a friend on the opposite bench in John Healy for example...interviewer:he was the one who sponsored Natalie Elphickes move to Labour"...she is a bad egg, she was in your party and now she crossed over due to endorsement by your friend in the Labour party, which one is it. This guy is so symbolic of the state of British politics
Ane folk are concerned about brown people in small boats…wake up people!
Mistake 😂😂😂😂 I’m Sooooooo sorry said father Jack
That self forgiving and downplaying smile is irritating
£5 pound let alone £ 5 million pounds isn’t a mistake HMRC should drag him over the Cole’s
I've read it's a £1M penalty on top of the tax bill.
Wouldn't you just love to type the letter demanding it's paid in full within 28 days or it's off to jail?
He is a lyer
Hehehe 5 mill!! Silly mistake
😂😂😂

I come UK 3 years now- I love £420 every week benefits- I love free house, free bus rides, free swim-pool, free food bank and free phone (Thank English God Starmer for good immigrant lawyer friend fight hard to keep me in English town)Starmer bloody good geezer
I'm glad my tax money is going to you :) . I know immigrants on benefits are not my enemy, they are vulnerable people who contribute a lot to society. Also I know you're not my enemy because I'm not a knuckle dragging idiot. I know people like Fishy Sunak and Cruella Braverman are my real enemy and they contribute nothing
Nice one Putin or whoever you are , that's a nice load of BS your shovelling there , nice and divisive, you must be so proud
Nice try mate, but your mate, 30p Lee is out at the next election.
You know what asylum seekers are entitled to once their claim is accepted?
Very little.
They have to find a job or get nothing, same as anyone else that is judged fit to work.
Compare to the plight of unpaid carers who inadvertently go a few quid over the threshold and then have their lives destroyed and are viewed as criminals. It's OK to make mistakes if you're rich and powerful.
