Levothyroxine or Armour Thyroid for Hypothyroidism (Low Thyroid Symptoms)

  • What can you do about Hypothyroidism? The standard treatment for symptoms of low thyroid is levothyroxine (Synthroid®) also known as T4, but that doesn't always help with the symptoms of low thyroid - fatigue, low libido, itchy dry skin, depression, brain fog.

    Just found your channel. I have no thyroid due to having thyroid cancer. I’ve been on levothyroxine for YEARS. I got my endo to switch me to Armour. I get to start it soon as my blood test results are back. I can’t wait. Levothyroxine hasn’t worked for me at all…been taking it since 2012. Hope I see a change. Thank you for this information.

    My Dr. switched me from Levothyroxine 100mcg and liothyronine 5mcg to Armour thyroid 90mcg, omg I’ve gained 25 pounds in 4 months, and I feel terrible, stomachache, headache, dizziness, muscle aches, tiredness, I couldn’t get enough sleep. I’m going back to Levo 100, and lio 5. I hope I can lose the 25 pounds

    Hi ! This is great.went to an Endocrinologist today. I’ve been on Armor for years. He doesn’t like it, I have all of those symptoms. He gave me 4 samples of different thyroid meds. 😱 I try each one every week. I don’t now where to start. I live in Texas, mid cities area between Dallas and Ft. Worth. 76039 . I am 69 years young, by the way. Doctor said at my age I shouldn’t use Armor. 😅😅😮😮 Thank you!! I live in the Grapevine, Southlake, area.

I’m in dire need to find another Dr. in the Houston area that is a supporter of Armour Thyroid and/or T3 in general. @@SimpleHormones I’m definitely learning that throughout this journey. It’s becoming pretty evident that finding a Dr. who is doesn’t go by the lab work only to determine the course of treatment, but one that takes the clinical side into account from the patient (symptoms) as well. It comes down to quality of life & the risk factors associated with elevated cholesterol & other potential cardiac adverse effects to if it goes to long mistreated 😓.

    My TSH was high in April 2020 after experiencing numerous symptoms of hypothyroidism. I was put on 50 mcg of Levythroxine and gained 30 lbs since. My hair is still falling out, nails splitting, extreme fatigue, no sex drive. TSH was tested every 6 months and has went from 5.34 to 2.3 but then back up to 3.4 recently. They finally tested my TPO and I have Hashimoto's. My doctor switched me to Armour Thyroid due to the fact Levythroxine wasn't helping with symptoms and I just started taking it today. My question is, will Armour Thyroid make me gain weight as well? My T3 and T4 were normal, so will this make a difference in symptoms or should I have just stayed on Levythroxine and increased dosage?

I’ve gotten my hands on some testosterone cream, and if I really want this to work, where’d be the best place to apply (wrist, inner thigh, neck?). I feel like I’m 80 years old physically, hurt from head to toe and currently don’t have anyone to have sex with so that’s the least of my worries. Feeling this damn bad, not having energy to wake up everyday sucks the life out of me. This was just a year ago and I'm afraid I've been getting gradually worse since then. I was also diagnosed with Hashimotos just over a year ago as well. I am also in perimenopause and so I'm not sure what symptoms are from my thyroid and what are my hormones. I am not confident in any of my doctors, be it endocrinologists or primary. Adina - Thanks for watching. There may be a few things that can stimulate your thyroid into working a bit better, including increasing iodine intake in your diet. Many of us avoid table salt, which is a major source of iodine. Getting iodine back may help in some cases. If iodine insufficiency isn't the issue, then the only effective treatment for low thyroid issues is taking a thyroid hormone replacement.

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 3 lety +1

      Also, depending on your age and menopause situation, you might be low on progesterone, which can dramatically decrease your ability to sleep. It may be related to the switch from NP to Armour. Or it could be something else. The only way to tell that for sure is to switch back to NP and see if the sleep problem resolved. Except I suspect the reason you switched to Armour had to do with NP being recalled or unavailable.

      If you're taking just levothyroxine, it's possible you're one of those people who doesn't convert T4 (levothyroxine) into the active thyroid hormone T3. That could explain why levothyroxine may not make you feel any different.

      Hmmm. I wasn't aware of that. Unfortunately, there is such a thing as HYPERthyroidism. That's an extremely serious issue that's caused by taking too much thyroid. My concern with an OTC thyroid hormone is that patients (probably) won't be getting their thyroid (T3 and T4) hormone levels tested. That could be a major problem. If you're taking that, I'd strongly recommend getting your levels tested to make sure they're optimal. Thanks for mentioning that.

    5 six years back I got diagnosed with low thyroid. Six months I went to see the thyroid doctor and she prescribed thyroid medicine and to balance my hormones she keep changing up and down. After six months she said, this the dose you take for rest of your life and you TH is normal. I said, good. After two to three months my blood calories spiked and I got scar on one of my eye. I went and did check up with my family doctor and she did a blood test to check if I don't have high blood pressure or any other health problem. She also surprised and said, you did a blood test two months before and everything was normal. Anyways, blood test came back normal. The scar normally come on eyes due to high calorie in blood but I am lucky to have it on one eye. Actually, that scar I got due to thyroid medication. I stop taking it for seven days and now only taking only for three days. I get headache once or twice a week. When I went to check with my family doctor. She said, it is due to taking less of your tyroid medication. I told her. I don't see any systems of thyroid me means not losing hair and gaining weight and not feeling tired so why should I keep taking the medication. My blood show less TSH and I don't have any symptoms of thyroid. So just remember this medication can have side effects and shoot up your calories in blood and I think it don't work just a placebo effect. Is Armour a better choice? NP Thyroid has been recalled. After contacting my doctor about this he had reordered more NP Thyroid for me. It comes in an amber bottle, so no lot numbers on my last bottle. So I'm concerned about my next bottle. I will talk to the pharmacist about the lot numbers and bring my letter. If Armour is a better choice I can see if he will switch to Armour. I have sent you an email to find some one in my area. My family doctor is a great guy, but I'm very interested in someone who can do more for me.

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks for watching! In my professional opinion, NP and Armour are very similar. Desiccated thyroid is notoriously difficult to make and the history of these hormones is littered with recalls for “sub-potency” (too little hormone in the tablets) and “super-potency” (too much hormone in the tablets). I’m not so convinced that one is better than the other. It’s a good idea to stick with thyroid from 1 manufacturer, if possible, for the sake of consistency. But that’s not always possible. The bottom line is there will ALWAYS be supply problems with thyroid medication. It’s unfortunate but a fact. If Armour is available then go for it.

      Sangeeta - Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm definitely not that familiar with thyroid replacement products in Oman. I would suspect that the availability is more limited there though. If I were you, I might ask for Cytomel or whatever T3 might be called in your country, in addition to T4. It would be necessary to have your blood tested for T3, T4, and TSH to make sure your levels are just right. In a lot of situations, doctors may be less willing to prescribe T3 if they're not as familiar with it. I wish I had something more helpful. Best of luck with your thyroid and perimenopause issues. Estradiol and progesterone are definitely the best treatment for menopause.

    What can be used for the shedding of the hair?

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 3 lety

      The best treatment for thinning hair that comes from low thyroid is optimizing both T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. Other treatments may help a little, but they're unlikely to get to the root problem, which is the loss of your hormones. There could be lots of other reasons for thinning hair, but an experienced hormone optimization provider would be able to determine if that's the case.

    Hi. I have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you so much!!
    What to do if Free t3 and Free t4 are good but TPO is high and TSH is low?
    Also, I was using NP thyroid and had terrible gut issues and when I changed to Levothyroxine it completed disappeared. I was even told by my doctor that I had Crohns according to my symptoms.

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 2 lety +1

      TPO stands for thyroid peroxidase. It's an indicator that your body might be attacking itself, which is called an autoimmune response. When it causes thyroid problems, it's often diagnosed as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Crohns is a different type of autoimmune disease that attacks your intestines instead of your thyroid. Funny you should mention "gut issues" and Crohns. There can be a relationship between what happens in your gut with the bacteria in there and your immune system, something called "leaky gut." It would be a great idea to have someone who really knows about that check you out. It could be that thyroid AND Crohns problems are originating in your gut?

      Prasanthi - Thanks for watching. I'm not as familiar with brand names of thyroid hormones in countries other than the US. However, it looks like Thyronorm 100mcg is a version of T4 and TMax 25mcg is a version of T3. As long as your blood T4 and T3 levels (especially Free T3) are in the optimal range, those should be good options for treatment.

    Hello thanks for the info. I have to say my pharmacist switched me from Armour to NP. I’m actually seeing a difference. I have more energy and less fatigue on NP. Why is this? Is it the fillers? I have been using armour for 4-5 years and have felt tired most of the time. never connected it to the armour.

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks for watching. Some people do better on Armour, some do better in NP. In my experience, they’re “roughly” equivalent but switching from one to the other may require a dosage adjustment. As I may have mentioned, there are constant supply problems with thyroid hormones which sometimes means we’re forced to make a switch. That’s just the way it is.

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 3 lety +5

      On the question about "fillers" . . . A lot of people have the idea that some medications have fillers and some don't. The reality is that NP® Thyroid and Armour® Thyroid consist of desiccated porcine thyroid, from dried pig thyroid glands, plus other ingredients that allow for the proper dosage as well as that allow the tablet to be a consistent, swallowable size. Both of these thyroid products necessarily contain fillers, most notably calcium stearate, dextrose, and mineral oil. Without fillers, you might have a super tiny tablet that was too small to handle (or even see!) or that might crumble very easily and you'd end up with a prescription bottle full of powder and no visible thyroid tablets. Armour® contains microcrystalline cellulose where NP® does not. Microcrystalline cellulose is extremely commonly used in drug tablets and has almost zero impact on the action of any drug, for the most part. It's possible that "fillers" could be the difference between these 2 brands, but I don't think it's all that likely. More likely is the technical difficulties of getting exact doses of thyroid hormones T3 and T4 from dried pig thyroids. It's a difficult process and there are bound to be variations between manufacturers, even though the tablets are tested vigorously. Hope that helps.
