This is by far the best video on overwintering dipladenia and Mandavilla, Thank you so much for explaining everything so thoroughly!
Thanks Connie!!!
Indeed!
I was able to bring in my Mandevilla vine yesterday. I put it in my basement. I am wondering if I need to keep a light on otherwise it would be quite dark. Most of the time I have LED lighting in that room. What would your opinion be?
@@user-ly2tj7mh7y last year I put mine in mine in the basement, but I’m in a bi-level so it still received some light and I did water occasionally. When I put it out this spring it took much longer to put on growth and bloom. But it came back just as full and beautiful! The year before I put it in a room upstairs where it’s a little warmer and has daylight. It still shed its leaves but the growth and blooms were much earlier. I am in Northwest Indiana and we can have very cold winters. Also, I did not trim mine down to the level she did in the video. I just couldn’t do it 😂 so then I was sweeping up leaves all the time. I am opting for earlier growth and blooms for next year so I will be putting it in my foyer.
@@conniehuetdid you debug it? I read about bring bugs inside with outside plants 😫
Thank you so much. I’m so glad I can keep mine as I was never green thumb and I love this diplodenia that I bought this year.
At flowers beautifully and I’ve had it since April and I live here in Ohio!
Your video is very educational and I appreciate it so much
Rather than buying a new one every year I’m going to try this! Thank you
Your video is very informative, I really appreciate it. Thank you!
I'm in Georgia (southern US) and I bring in my Dipladenia in October/November. I only prune lightly. I put in a sunny window where I get great light, leaves dont fall off, and it blooms and puts out bew growth in February, I put it out in April/May, and keeps going well into Fall the next year. It's been a great plant for me here, esp with its slight draught tolerance.
I live in Georgia too! I followed her directions to the letter and the results were so satisfying. I think because it’s such a resilient plant, the mandevilla will come back whether persnickety care details are followed or not. critical. I loved the idea of not killing such a lovely plant, giving it another chance at life. But I also really loved not having to spend 40-80 dollars for replacements come spring.
Thanks I didn't know I could prune my mandevilla back so far...I've always brought them in 'whole' and cleaned up leaves all winter 😂...not this year! I just cut them all back!
Glad I could help!
Thanks so much for this video! I am also in Southern Ontario and I just rescued a plant like this from the garbage! This is perfect for someone new to this type of plant!
Glad it was helpful!
I live in Lakewood. Never touch them. They bloom all year with some yellow leaves in December January. They always come back with flowers by March . I have had two in small pots and for 15 years they are very happy . They like to be pot bounded
@@dianebaum5194 thanks for sharing! Where is Lakewood?
That's hilarious! That's how I acquired my 2 Dipledenias 2 yrs ago. They were sitting at the side of the road. 😅
Great video and so informative! Hello from North Louisiana. I wish I had a tenth of the energy that you do! Your gardens are very beautiful. I would like to make a meme of you chopping away at that big mandevilla. And the title would be, "Why all my plants are afraid to misbehave!"
I will be overwintering my Mandevilla using your vid. as a guide. Thank you for helping me :)
Glad it was helpful!
I enjoy how quick and fast you did that when you're trying to learn something you don't need somebody scheduling along about bulshit
Very helpful! Thank you so much!
Fabulous, Sandra, thank you! My lovely friend has just given me a dipladenia for my birthday and I'd never heard of them before so here I am getting all clued up. First video I found, and told me everything I needed to know xx
Thank you!! Appreciate this!! Watching it just in time to pull my two dipladenia before the threat of frost this week!
Thank you for all the info.!! I knew nothing about them but picked one up because it was so beautiful!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! You've answered all my questions.
Thank you so much for your advices!
Thank you for this excellent video. I Am brand new to mandevilla. I'm going to enjoy her on my back porch and now I know how to put her away for the Winter. Thank you again.
Glad it was helpful!
Watching you cut those beaties back is so sad 😢 but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I'll do this to mine when the time comes. Thanks for all your very helpful information! I subscribed to your channel. 😊
Thanks for subscribing!!
I trimmed mine way back, I have it in a south facing window. It is actively growing, long vines, which I trimmed back today. It hasn't lost any leaves. I have overwintered it for a couple years already.
Hare Krishna. So beautiful garden. Good share 🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Wonderful video….thanks Sandra….will follow your plan and store my Mandevillas in a cold room in the basement…temp at 10 degrees Celsius. Will cut them back severely…🥲 I am in Montréal 🇨🇦.
Wonderful!
Thank you for your advice...we buy one every year, last year I tried to save it but I think it caught frost and didn’t survive... going to pull mine out of the vases tomorrow.
I’m in Toronto so I can relate to our similar weather.... thank you.
Need to go on a road trip next summer to see your nursery.
We'd love to have you visit - we are just a few minutes off the shore of Lake Huron -- between Bayfield & Grand Bend.
สวัสดีครับ มาชมกานจัดสวนต้มไม้ด้วยครับ สวยงามมากๆครับ
Very helpful thanks for sharing your video
Just chopped it. We never did at the end of last season so we had some *vines*. Thanks for the info.
Mid summer , south Louisiana zone 9b, i had to radically trim mine down to 6 inches because if leaf burn. They all came back! So, although it hurt like crazy the first time, im going to cut mine back again for inside for winter. Thanks for this , im not scared anymore! I would try to see if they overwinter outside but last year we had wet nasty cold that even killed all my in ground plants that were covered! 😢
Great video! I always thought, living in a colder climate, I had to replace my tropicals every year. And, all this time I thought I had Mandavilla (b/c the store tag said it) but my leaves are small.
Wow, great video! greetings from Greenville, NC.
Drastic is right! Thank u!!
Most welcome!
Very good video and . . . You have a very pleasant camera presence. Thank You.
Incredible video. Very informative. Kindly keep updated.
Very informative and helpful video. Thank you.
THANKYOU GREAT LESSON WILL TRY FOR THE FIRST TIME AND CANT WAIT TIL NEXT SPRING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS!
Thank you for this video I’ve spent so much money on tropical plants this last spring - I’ve been freaking out knowing the end of their time will be near and having all my hard work I’ve put into them Ugg….to lose them was breaking my heart- watching your video gave me comfort in knowing I can try and save my beautiful expensive plants😉🥰
Good luck! Just make sure you have lots of patience next spring/summer too! czcams.com/users/shortspxJwAV__RBk
Wonderful video! I grew my first Mandevilla this year and wondered what to do over the winter. Thank you!
Mandevilla & Dipladenias are SO BEAUTIFUL, really the most rewarding flower 🌺 great for beginners!
Such a great video! Everything I wanted to know and more! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Hi, From the last two years I placed my Mandevila plant in the Garage, when I take it out in the spring, only leaves grow with no blooms . Can you please tell me the reason?
Thanks so much! Exactly the information I needed.
Glad it was helpful!
Loved this information! Thank you!
Great sharing, well explained.
Glad it was helpful!
This was very helpful! Thanks so much!❤
Thanks for the good advice!
Thanks! Super informative!!
Thanks!
This is the best video to keep my mandevilla overwintering . Can you make more videos on overwintering other plants? I am in the same area as you and I have so many plants want keeps.
Thank you so much for this video it's very helpful. I do have a question, when I cut the plant back and bring it inside I will be storing it in my basement. Will it be ok if it's in a dark room?
Super helpful, thank you so much!
Every winter when I bring my Mandavilla indoors it drops a large number of leaves but then it begins to do something interesting. My plant begins to grow extremely long climbing vines during this period and wow do they grow fast. Over night they can grow several inches... it's absolutely bonkers. Eventually these vines will develop several seed pod(s). I'm not sure if I should leave these long climbing vines as is or simply cut them back after they develop.... any suggestions? Cheers ! BTW - Your plants are gorgeous !
Great video
Excellent video, thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Best wishes. God bless
Awesome video. Valuable information I needed for our dipladenia plant which is hanging indoors over winter now. Lost all its leaves by Christmas time. Now I’m not so concerned. Question though. If all the new growth comes from the base, why do we leave as much as 6”? Maybe up to 6” is considered the base of the plant.
Please put those gorgeous cuttings in a vase!
Thanks for the helpful mandevilla tips for overwintering. My question, my plant is about 2 ft high. I did not trim back last fall. A friend wintered it in her home. It has lost all its leaves but there are signs of growth on every stem right out to the ends. Should I just leave it or should I trim back some of the branches. Thanks in advance.
Give it a good haircut and it will come back full and lush for you!!
Loved this video, the only thing I wondered is how do you handle not bringing bugs in the house ?
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. We bought Mandevillas last summer. They were growing along 5 foot stakes in the form of a tripod. We brought them inside during the winter but didn't do any trimming. The leaves fell off and we were left with naked vines. We recently placed them back outside again as the temperature begins to warm up. Leaves are slowly beginning to sprout. Do we need to trim the vines as you did in the video? or is it too late and just let it be?
I would trim the vines as it will encourage them to fill in a bit. Good luck!
Thanks so much for explaining everything - I just took our Mandevilla and Dipaldenia out of the basement and it has a lot of long thin branches - do i just leave those?
I live in Central Florida. I have 2 Mandeville and 1 Dipaldemia. Do I need to prune? and when to do it. I live them all year round in my lanai. Thank you ! Appreciated your response.
Thank you very much for the video.
I may be 3 months too late to trim my Mandevilla.
I brought the whole plant as is without trimming indoors in October and it has been since sitting by a south facing window . It has been blooming on and off all through and recently growing a lot of vines.
Is there anything I can do at this time ? Should I trim it now or leave it as it is till I move it outside in Summer ?
Any suggestion is appreciated.
I live in Minnesota, USA.
This video is SOOOOOO helpful😊 'Took me quite awhile to find you, and 'am relieved to finally have such a thorough understanding of the how's & why's of over-wintering Mandevillas. However, I have already greatly over-watered mine 3Xs since I brought her inside in Nov. (thinking she was losing leaves due to dehydration).'Wondering now, w/out disturbing her further by digging her out of the pot, is there a way to tell if I've caused her roots to rot/killed her? Also, it looks like it doesn't matter where on the stems one makes the pruning cuts, is that right? Finally, I have to keep plants out of reach of my cat in my small apartment➡'wondering if, even though it's not cool in apt in winter, do you think I could keep her in a wardrobe closet till end of March, or should she be in sunlight? Again, thank you so very much for your video❣
I'm not sure how well she will do in the closet but give it a go -- if she is at room temperature give her a drink every now and then. I would fully expect the leaves to all fall off in the dark. Any chance you have a grow light you can put in there with her? Let me know how it goes!
My Mandeville plant has been in my basement over winter in dormancy. Now it's end of March, can I start removing all the crispy leaves to bring it in a warmer part of the house. I live in southern ontario. Thanks.
Yes you can! - sorry I missed this earlier!
Thank you for this video. Do mandevilla need to be debugged and repotted before bringing indoors?
I live in SW Florida my Mandeville is on a trellis out front,it doesn't loose leaves should I still city back 3-14-24
I’m going to try this
Is it to late to prune my dipledenia/mandvilla, May 23? I'm trying to get it to flower. I didn't prune this past year, it was my first season with these plants. Not sure exactly which they are. I have one white, and one red. Kept them inside through winter they have vined all winter, and have leaves. I want them to reflower.
Enjoyed your videos very educational, but I was wondering can you make new plants out of those cuttings that you took off of the mandevilla? I live in Florida
I live in Spain and had the same question. Having moved from Cañada over a year ago, I am familiar with prepping for winter right about now. However, I am realizing here, plants start their second period of growth after the heath of summer. I bought the Diplodenia a few weeks ago for fall colour in the garden and will grow it as late as I can. However I would like to try starting cuttings but don’t know the best time.
From.watching your video, it seems you just snip them off wherever. Do you not hv to cut off at a node? Thank you
Can I trim it back to where it has zero leaves? I had some mites and the bottom leaves fell off off so if I trim it short there will be zero leaves left.
Great video. Thank you so much. I will try your method, is it in the dark when I put it in the basement?
I need to ask. How cold can the flowers stand in a cold garage. I live in were is gets as cold as 10 degrees at times during the coldest time of winter. It’s a garage I don’t have a basement. Should I just bring in the house. Mine are really big right I am going to need to prune them pretty soon. Thanks for your help. It’s much appreciated.
Thanks so very much for sharing this video. I want to overwinter mine this year. I was wondering how often the mandevilla needs to be transplanted? I bought mine last year and replanted it when I got it home. It did really well this year!
Bilo bi mi korisno da mi kažete gde vam je prezimila dipladenija u toki zimskih dana... Kako ste je sačuvali... Na kojoj temperaturi treba da bude u toku zime... Hvala unapred... ❤️🙋♀️
Do they need lights? I have a pool house I can keep at 45°F with no issues.
When you say cold storage in your basement, how cold is it? I live in Oklahoma and don’t have a basement. Would this survive in a shed with a cover on it…….a winter fabric cover that people use outside on fruit trees? Thanks for any suggestions
If we put it under grow light on March, it will help them. I don't have too many windows with a lot of light?
Yes for sure!
Thank you ❤
Hi should I water my Mandevilla when wintering?
Great video! Should we water right before going into cold storage?
Make sure it’s damp but not soaking wet. Check it periodically during dormancy and give it a bit of water if it’s super dry. You want to keep it alive but not encourage growth
What about bringing in unwanted pests? How do you deal with that issue so it doesn’t infect my whole plant room? (Happened to me before) Thank you for the video!
I put them in my cold storage where pests aren't an issue. I would treat them with insecticidal soap otherwise.
Does your basement have a window? My basement doesn't have windows, is that a good place to over winter the Mandevilla?
This is great. Do i repot in the spring?
Can you try and root any of those pieces you are cutting off?
For sure you can!
Do I need to wash the roots and use new soil when wintering my dipladenia to get rid of bugs.
Great video!
I was planning to bring my Mandeville indoors for the winter but its in a heavy large terracotta pot.
Can I repot in a smaller pots and then prune it down?😎
Sure you can!
Great advice! When the plants are dormant should they be in the dark? And, how can you overwinter geraniums? Thank you!
I have never wintered over geraniums myself -- but I know most people who store them trim them back and dig the up and store them bare root in their basements. You could also keep them as a houseplant.
Dipladenia and mandevilla are Dormant October thru April.
@@HuronRidgeAcres Hi! thanks for the great video. Is it necessary to water them during the winter while they are in "storage" (away from light, etc)?
@@torokandroll hardly at all -- I generally water mine maybe once mid winter (January/Feb) they aren't actively growing so they won't need much if any water.
Great video. Ok so not much watering, how about light? Is it too good to be true? Trim, put in basement, water once or twice during dormancy. No light either? Thank you for this informative video!!!
Hi! Awesome video! I wish I saw it sooner. I left my mandevilla outside because it’s so large and now I’m afraid the frost killed it. I’m in North Carolina. Do you think it still has a chance of survival if I cut it back and bring it in the house now?
Sorry I missed your question earlier. How did you make out? Did it survive?
Hi. Thank you for this. Once cut back can i put them in an unheated conservatory with lots of light. Will they survive not being in the dark? This is the only place I can store them.
Yes I believe they should be fine -- the cool temperature will keep them dormant -just make sure you don't let them freeze!
Can I leave mine in the house I just bought one too and started them in the house and it seems to be growing is that OK
You can leave it in your house -- it will still go dormant. Plants are smart and know the seasons :) -- don't be surprised if it looses quite a few leaves and starts to look sad -- it will perk back up in the spring. Just water it as needed during the winter.
Hi Sandra - I have followed your advice and am overwintering my two Mandevillas in pots in a cold room - temp is maintained at 14 degrees Celsius. I have a soil guage and I check the soil every 7-9 days and wait until it reads dry before adding water. The room is pitch black - and I have several creepy-looking white shoots that have grown - several are over 20 cm in length. Should I cut them back to keep this growing energy within the base or just let them grow? and cut them back in the spring when I put them in a well-lit room in the house. - Again, Sandra - thanks for your great video.....
Thanks for watching! Yes mine continue to send out white shoots as well. I trim them back every so often. I barely water mine all winter. I think I've given them a drink once so far in the last 3 months. The more you water them the more they will try to grow so I would cut back on that a bit.
@@HuronRidgeAcres thanks for your reply- I’m relieved you get these white shoots as well…I will follow your advice and cut back on the watering….hopefully the two plants I am overwintering will spring to life in April/May with some light and some fertilizer. Very kind of you to get back to me so soon…,🇨🇦
I wish I saw this video much earlier. I didn’t cut my plant for the winter, but stay nice and green. Can I cut my plant now in March?
If they are looking nice and green I would give them a little trim to promote new growth, but I wouldn't cut them back this severely. Usually if you don't cut them back they just make a huge mess in your house. Lucky you that they stayed green!
@@HuronRidgeAcres thank you very much!!!
So I have done all of that back in oct and had it in my basement cut back but it is starting to grow. It's in complete dark and gets no light but it's still growing quite a bit. Should I just let it go? Should I bring it up in front of a window or should I cut it back again?
It's up to you if you want the maintenance of it in your house in the meantime -- I usually just keep mine in the basement until closer to spring so I don't have to bother with it. If it has grown much in that time then I cut it back when I bring it back into the bright warm space.
So trimmed all the way down last October, lost all ts leaves, stored in the dark in a large pot in the basement away from any heat...... So here it is at the end of january, should they be lightly watered when they are in this state? or just them as is?
You can give them a little drink - just not too much - you don’t want root rot to set in.
You didn't say a word about light requirements during the overwintering process.
It doesn’t need any. Its going dormant and ideally being stored in a cool dark basement
I put my mandavilla out too early this year. It's not happy. Most of the foliage is gone. I'm hoping it will come back 😞
They do not like being cold!! Fingers crossed it recovera
I put my flowers in the house. Thay are growing so active! May I cut them in January? Or it is too late?
You can if you wish to -- it won't hurt the plant either way. Usually in the winter months they go quite dormant and drop most of their leaves. Cutting them back before they do that just avoids a big mess.
I planted mine in the ground, can I dig it up to winter it. I've always just bought a new one in spring...
I'd give it a try. It should work. Just make sure you dig up a big root ball and hopefully it will winter over ok.
I planted mine in ground also and then we had an unexpected freeze which froze the plant. 2 days later it's back to normal 45 degrees at night and mid 60's in the day. Is it worth a try to dig it up and store in my garage? Or has 2 nights of hard freeze probably taken it?
Can you propagate the clippings?
I noticed the roots are potato like. Just wondering if I can grow them from this roots
I would think you probably can -- but I've never tried.
How often should I water the Mandevilla plant during the winter months?
Very seldom. I only watered mine twice all winter
Can I still cut my mandevilla now that it is Spring? It doesn't have leaves
Sure you can -- I'm going to give mine a trim as well. I just took it out of the cold dark basement and it has a few long stringy bits I need to trim off.
Can you root from what you cut off?
Give it a try!! I think they should grow roots for you.
can i root the cuttings?
Sure you can!
Hi, I have 3 large dipladenia pots each with 3 large dipladenia plants and a dark burgundy spike plant (I don't know what they are called) in the center. Should I remove/replant the spike plants before cutting down the dipledenia? They are already about 2.5 feet tall. Am I correct in assuming that the spike plant will not go dormant and will grow much larger if taken indoors to overwinter? Would you just cut down the dipladenia and leave the spike plants in the center? But in so doing, wouldn't the spike need sun and water over winter? These pots are so beautiful now, I hate to get rid of them, but don't have much indoor space. Thank you for your advice.
I'm not sure how much luck you will have in removing the spike and saving it -- you maybe able to get it out of the pot, but my guess is the roots will be significantly damaged as they will have grown into the dipladenia. You can try to just trim back the dipladenia and see what happens to the spike -- it will definitely go somewhat dormant in a cool dark space - or you can just decide to sacrifice the spike now and remove it.
