    Geranium are one of my absolute top picks when it comes to overwintering. When you find the right geranium that performs exactly as you want, you want to hold on to them with your dear life! Just like my grandma would do every winter in Indiana. In this video I clearly show you how to overwinter your geranium (Pelargonium species) and what to do the following spring when it is time to wake them back up. #geranium #pelargonium #overwintering

    I just take the pot, leaves and flowers still on, and put it in my cool unfinished basement. In late spring, I bring it up, cut it back and top with a good layer of compost. Same for my calllas and canas.

    • @martystevens2313
      @martystevens2313 Před rokem +5

      @JoyFuralle nope. I imagine the size of the pot would be important as a smaller pot may well dry out faster (and thus for a longer period of time). These pots are fairly large at around 20".

    Always enjoy your sediments on memory plants. Funny you should mention the geraniums, a funny memory for me. About 10-15 years ago I had a not-so-great geranium variety that I was going to let live out the summer in its pot mixed in with the other summering houseplants. About 5 years before that a friend at a past employer made a few leaf cuttings of her oxalis which did very well for me, so well they seeded in that sad little geranium pot that summer. I feel the geranium outsmarted me so the two will be together forever.

    Thank you for saying what I needed to hear about deciding whether to store them. Usually I bring my giant geraniums into our dining room for the winter and they bloom all winter. But this year I’m having construction done and I don’t have the space so I’ve been trying to decide whether to bring them in or just let them go. They aren’t special in any way except that they’re really large. Maybe I’ll keep a few cuttings but I think I’m going to just leave them outside to die in cold and start over in the spring. When you spoke about your grandmother’s geraniums, I remembered the red geraniums that I saw hanging from window boxes in Spain many years ago.

    Those pieces you clip off in the spring (with a few 'nodes')
    can also be rooted in small pots in a sunny window.
    It's a good way to make additional plants, beyond overwintering.
    When they look as though they are thriving, transplant to its summer pot.
    I have about a 50-75% success rate with my new starts, probably better if I had ideal conditions.

Gorgeous leaves and shapes. Large beautiful plants, but only a handful of blooms all year. Was that because they didn’t have to be cold and “shut down” for winter, so to speak. Take cuttings and overwinter the cuttings if you are short on space. Geraniums take very easily.

    Is the point of doing it this way to make bigger/better blooms in the spring? I have a huge/old one which I keep in the same pot year round and bring inside in winter. I don't want to kill is by doing this... Please advise. Thanks.

    • @plantvibrations
      @plantvibrations  Před 9 měsíci

      If you have room for it inside then keep doing what you’re doing. The point of this is not to create bigger plants, bc as I mentioned, as they mature they produce less flowers. The point of this is to simply overwinter

    Since you end up cutting it back anyways, is there any reason you can’t do that before storing it. Just thinking it would be less cumbersome for storing but I assume if you are not doing that then there is a reason.

    • @plantvibrations
      @plantvibrations  Před 10 měsíci

      You can certainly cut it back a little bit prior but going further can cause too much stress
