Ever wonder if you can overwinter your coleus? Of course! Coleus makes a wonderful houseplant. Learn how to overwinter your coleus in this video. :)
Yuliya - Jak na to + styl
I've really never been a fan of Coleus, but here lately I'm warming up to those. I saved 2 at my seasonal garden center job from the dumpster and have really enjoyed seeing their bright faces in the shady part of the garden. I'll take some cuttings for next yr, I cut my Geraniums too for overwintering. Your tips will help save some $$.
Wow beautiful coleus! Thank you for all your expertises advice on how to care for them too !!!
I agree. I too don’t like to see plants die. Planted coleus this year in my garden and just love them. That pop of colour is wonderful. I’ll be taking cuttings Thank you Love your channel. 🍂🍁💕
Love Coleus! I’m 63 and remember them from gardens when I was 4 years old. I consider them an old fashioned plant. Just got back from Disney World and they have so many big beds of different mixed coleus for fall coloring. So pretty! Thank you for the video and info.
The Limelight Coleus is just beautiful! Reminds me of mop head hydrangea which I love the foliage of. I love how the variety of coleus play off one another. Beautiful! 🌸🌿🌻
Very helpful and timely. Thanks. used coleus this year as the primary plant on a shady deck, in pots, along with hosta and it was quite a success. I also used it along a shady perimeter after some early blooming perennials had finished and it was a lovely addition. I was planning on bringing some inside and just simply need to make enough room in the house.
Thank you!! Thank you! I think this will really be a benefit to my garden next year!! 😁
I love coleus and the ease makes me want to do this now. I have some spots in my house that would benefit from their brightness. Thanks for the inspiration. 💕👏🏻💕
Thanks again for all you flower knowledge that you share. It's really helpful.
Wow, perfect timing for this video. I was just yesterday googling how to overwinter my Coleus collection, and now I open my home page and there it is, your video. You are the best :-)
Ha ha! how serendipitous :)
I love them they are so colorful. My mother and I were just walking in a garden center this past weekend and the coleus also caught her attention she stopped there and looked and touched them for a good while. ☺️ I was telling her how they were all are related the many colors and some very thick almost like very thick velvet. Great video Yuliya, thank you.😊
They are so FUN!
I never thought of taking cuttings and overwintering! Genius. Thanks for sharing this Yulia! I spend so much money unnecessarily!
Great video Y. Thanks for all this great advice. I always do the water rooting. Thanks for the light like. 💜💜💜.
WOW great video well done I’m bringing mine inside. Love simple straight forward directions.
Beautiful back yard, love your plants
Thank you! You answered my question about being able to winter over the original plant as well as the cuttings, which some sites do not mention.
I look forward to seeing how your Coleus does over winter. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Sandra! you can see the overwintering results from previous season here czcams.com/video/PCMov8z4Zpw/video.html
I haven’t had success with water propagating coleus but seeds are easy to start. I’ll be trying it this year! Thanks for the insights!
Your garden so so beautiful. Thanks 🙏
Thank you for doing this now! I had 2 huge gorgeous coleus in the spring but it rained so much I didn’t get them in the ground and left them in the pots in my front bed! Slugs ate them so bad by the time I could plant I had nothing to plant. I garden in zone 8a and we have almost the same conditions as you without the snow and it gets to 109 index in summer. Oh, I’m in Texas.
Thank you the great advice and information! You never disappoint😀❤
Thank you so much!
Beautiful coleus. Good video 👍
Thanks! Love this video and the tips.
Thanks! I have some pretty coleus I would like to save. Saves money too, if I don't have to purchase new ones in the spring!
Great video, very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for doing this video! Perfect timing, I have two coleus I want to overwinter.
Thank you for sharing this video,!I just bought coleus this year, i didn’t know what to do.💕🇨🇦
Thanks for the good information. I love coleus now I know how to overwinter mine. 😃
Thanks so much for this info. This is exactly what I'll be doing this fall. It's a great way to save money. I'm hoping I can keep the large original alive as well so it'll be big to put out again next year.
Barbara! Yes, they are so easy as a houseplant and great to enjoy in winter months 😀
Gorgeous garden!
Great info! Thank you!
Love Coleus. Garden is so pretty & I too have so much shade. That limelight is incredible. But love all the colors too. T.Y. 😳
I love what you are doing, I love gardening too.
Thank you!
Nice video. I agree, don't let the plants die ..ever! Dig them out in the fall, bring them in ensuring they get adequate light over the winter months. Then when it is warm enough to take them out, cut some clippings and plant them in the ground or in planters. Got it! I love coleus.😃
I love coleus❤️ watching from the Philippines
Thank you for sharing that great information.
thank you I have 4 beautiful coleus plants in the pots and I didn't want them to die
Awesome video!!! Coleus are my favorite plants. Huge collection here!!! 💔🌱
I'm trying that too. I also have some growing from seed that I kept indoors🌞
I grew mines from seed too it turn out beautiful. It took forever for the seeds to germinate but had mine outside.Happy gardening.
Thanks for the tips!
Happy to help!
Very beautiful plant
Great Video! I have never had a green thumb but this year I decided to try it and get some Coleus and plant them outside and they did great!
I tried bringing the Coleus stem to root it in the house but it only lasted 2 days and it died already.....
I am definitely going to try your tips and hopefully they will survive....
Very pretty
Thanks for sharing. I like the second method best. The first one is what I normally do and they don't do well for me that way. Thanks again.
Nice Coleus.
good information thank you
Love coleus ,here in far northern California I don't have to bring plant's in usually until late November or early December.
Great vid. Beautiful plants. I just put my cuttings straight in damp soil. They all root so easily. Super simple plant to care for I just wish I could keep mine outside but unfortunately we have below freezing temps here.
I took coleus cuttings several weeks ago. They are rooted but I keep forgetting to pick up fresh soil. It’s great to be able to bring a little of summer indoors.
I am so bad that way. I can have cuttings sitting in water for weeks. Thankfully they are very forgiving!
Wonderful video on over wintering coleus and thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Could you please also share how you over winter your elephant ears and other tropical plants? And how do you keep your kitties away from munching on your indoor plants?
Wow very infomative video
I’ve been growing Coleus for several years and have some big beautiful ones I have saved from cuttings every year. I put my cuttings in little bottles that sit in my kitchen window. Something I see about yours is you are not cutting the flowers off. By doing so more energy stays in in the plant, because they are a foliage plant, not grown for flowers and letting them grow is like letting them go to seed. I check mine regularly and pinch off the flowers.
Thanks for the heads up on the flowering thing.
Thanks 👍🥰
I hate seeing plants die! Bracing myself for 34F night this coming Friday 🥶 I wish I could bring my whole garden inside 😂
Oh no! thank goodness for the houseplants :)
I’m getting ready to “houseplant” mine but looking for Wild Rose Heuchera to replace them with that way my garden won’t loose color and I won’t have to replant. But oh my word, so expensive online & hard to find in nurseries! I love that red foliage color, brings so much life to an all green bed.
i just bought 'Wild Rose' at Home Depot. They were reasonably priced. Love that plant!
Y Garden I saw your message while I was driving and dashed into HD all excited! Sadly they only had the usual garden variety, no pun, heucheras, the dark green w red underside which I’ve never liked. Same at Lowes. Our big box stores don’t carry very many exotic plants, mostly boring stuff I already have. ☹️ The search continues, prob have to go to my favorite mom & pop nursery to find it. Thank you! 🙏
I always thought that Coleus was an annual plant, cause mind would start dying out in early Sept. I would always throw them out. Glad to hear I can keep them this year.
Yes you can 😊
Y, your coleus colors are so beautiful. I love them. I have the lime color but I'd like the burgundy color. What is its name of it? I'm overwintering my lime coleus this week. Thank you!
🤩🤩🤩
Hi Yulia another very informative video. When you take the cutting should I put it on a windowsill in direct sunlight, or a windowsill with late sun or just on the coffee table in the middle of the room? Does your answer apply to both when it is in water and when I pot it up please? I love love your garden it's so beautiful I love all your big trees. It makes me feel peaceful just looking at it, no wonder you love it. Thanks Natalie 😀
Thanks Natalie! When you are rooting any plants it is best to keep them out of sunlight or they will become dehydrated. Once they are rooted and potted up the brighter the better but introduce then gradually! Here is more info on how to deal with rootings: czcams.com/video/7K-yB4Zmhjs/video.html
How do you get such big leaves on the coleas in your sun room during the winter? Do you feed them plant food, fertilize them?
This yr was my first yr planting coleus n they thrived better than any of the others I planted🙂 other than my hosus
They are such great garden filler 😊
Great video, thanks for sharing the detailed steps. One reminder to cat owners, if you are bringing them in. Coleus is mildly toxic to cats. So if your cat it into plants, like mine is, then you might want to keep the room closed, or do something to keep them separated
I use neem oil & dilute in water. It doesn’t smell bad. I separate them in a different room so if I didn’t get all the bugs they won’t get my plants in the house contaminated. Also, water them w a little epsom salt (diluted in water) and they will be fine!
I use neem oil as well. Thanks for the tip!
Hello I can’t wait to try this. Do you remove the seed heads? Thank you for all the great information.
They are so worth a bit of extra work. Once you see your first bloom it's over! 😀
A friend told me she uses distilled water for the cuttings and the plant seem to do much better, Do you have any feedback on this approach?
Timely tips. Yes coleus aren’t happy outside at 40 degrees, I wish I could bring the coleus inside, but I already have succulents, a Norfolk pine, and a coffee plant. Besides Mr. Kitty 🐱 likes colorful salads 🥗
Sounds like my house! I am so grateful to have a sun room for all of my plants
Y Garden 😊
Does the plant have to be a certain size before you can cut a piece for rooting?
*LIKED* video, Mr. Yulia: we're going to be forcing Forsythia, bulbs and all sorts of *NEXT YEAR* plants *EVERYWHERE* . In glasses, small planters and on *EVERY* window sill.
And yes, sir, we will also be planting warm-colored annual and perennial plants wherever she wants but you married a planting freak so get used to it. Love the channel. Love you Yuliya, Keep doin' your thing. Soooo funny.
😂🤣😂🤣
What do you do with the old plants left in the ground??
Which grow lights do you use?
I am wondering if you have tried to grow from seeds? I have noticed my grew many flowers and seeds.
[fyi: both links to purchase-in descriptions are not connecting to amazon]
I overwintered but it’s so leggy now. Any suggestions?
Thank you for this video! Just a question ..do I leave the flowering portion on or take it off?
I would choose stems without flowers.
I cut flowers off when take them in.
Correct me if I am wrong...at the beginning did u say that you planted the cuttings on the other side of your garden to add color? You must have waited through the winter with those cuttings before u planted them in the ground in the Spring...right?
Hang on a min. Isn't this plant known as the "Scaredicat"? I can clearly see a not very scared cat at 7:46!
🌱Already have some cuttings rooting. Ever frown Flame Thrower ?🔥
I am in zone 6 and for some reason. this year. my Coleus were annihilated by mealy bugs. Happened so fast I couldn't save them! Oh. well: there's always next year.
Miss i like your coleus very beautiful .here in the philippines we pinch the top so that our coleus will lush then we cut the flower so that the plants will not get old easily. Miss thanks for viewing very beautiful green coleus and others
Novice here. So if you’re just taking cuttings, what are you doing with the rest of the plant?
It will die from frost. I would have taken them all but don't have enough space! :)
What about a video that explains if there is any way to modify the coloring. I.e. modify the pH*
Do you have a link for the product you use for bugs?
Here we go amzn.to/2ofJfqq
Thankyou. I was so sad that i would lose my Coleus to the cold
Hi..i tried overwintering some Coleus last winter..some survived and some died..im in zone 6b Canada.. .so we get pretty harsh winters..should I leave the cuttings in water all winter?thank you..also another question plz..i removed seeds last yr from a sunset orange colour Coleus.. I planted the seeds but they didn't come true to the original plant..they were isolated when I took the seeds out..would you know why plz
Good questions. First, I would not leave the cuttings in water all winter; I would let the roots develop in water for 4 to 6 weeks, then pot them up; choose a pot just slightly larger than the mass of roots, so you don't suffocate the plant over the winter; transferred to the potting medium, they will establish more readily as complete plants when you set them outside in spring. Second, seeds won't come true if the plant has come from parents of two varieties; but if you follow Yulia's tips on making cuttings, they will be true to the original "stock" plant.
@@giardinodialberi8751 hello 😊thank you for your help and great advice😊happy gardening
My colors has gone to seed for a while and grows everywhere (I LOVE it!). Is there a reason to overwinter besides just enjoying them inside?
Sorry *coleus*. Autocorrect doesn't like that word. :-P
Zone 5.
Michelle Miller They will die with frost.
Wow! mine never seed or spread. I believe the seedlings hybridize and colors look different. The only way to get true to color plant is to take cuttings.
Do you think when you mention, when you fertilize, what fertilizer you use? Cedar mulch would take of the slugs, seriously!
Thank you so much! I will try for sure. I use Dr. Earth or Plant-Tone.

😂🤣😂😂🤣 silly! You must not have much to do!
?do you use root enhancers? After the cutting
Many professional growers do not use rooting hormones for cuttings; since coleus root readily, I think you can safely forget it, but if you've already got some rooting hormone, why not use it? The formula usually includes an agent that prevents root rot.
Is that organic insecticide a systemic type application?
Organic
With the current prices of plants, I would love to reuse!!!!!
Where are you originally from????
I just noticed you have grass in all that shade! What kind of grass is it. My front is nearly all shade where I want grass. I would love to know so I could at least try it! I really have learned a lot watching you’re videos! Check out my previous replies! 😂🤣
Love the video and my rainbow coleus. Trying to kerp mine alive. 😢🙁 not very successful.
They are really easy. If kept indoors keep in bright, warm and humid location. No drafts!
Y Garden had mine to close to window... lots of cold draft... porch blocks natural sun light. Going to repot and put on my plant stand and get bigger light. Went from big pot tall and full to very skimpy. 😞
The only thing that works for me to get rid of slugs are the Corry's slug killer pellets.
Eu se coleus sim plantação e ir porque o sol calor grau more☹️
eles gostam de sombra
I hope you video when you cut the tips for overwintering.

Bugs smell???? Wonder where their little noses are?
Suggestion. When you show a product bottle, don’t shake it around. Your viewers can’t see the label. Otherwise, I learned a lot. Thanks
Let me guess: your husband was the one down-vote because you're bringing even more plants into the house? ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha! He did say this morning that he saw my video and what would happen if he gave me a thumb down. I told him he would sleep in the dog house tonight! 😂🤣
@@greatgardensforall Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Yuliya, notice how this video has been uploaded for several hours and there's still only *ONE* down vote, ha ha ha ha ha ha....Love ya, girl. You're awesome. IT'S *him*, HA HA HA HA HA HA...
One more thing. Remove any flowers. They flower at end of life cycle so you want to keep them from flowering
