Keto Over 40: How to Diet Differently - Thomas DeLauer
    Benefits
    Testosterone/Cholesterol
The study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, looked at very low carbohydrate ketogenic diets (VLCKD) relative to a traditional high carbohydrate diet in 26 men
26 men volunteered to participate in the study and were divided into two groups
    - VLCKD (5 % CHO, 75 % Fat, 20 % Pro)
    - Traditional western diet (55 % CHO, 25 % fat, 20 % pro) - study lasted 11 weeks
All subjects participated in a periodized resistance-training program three times per week - blood samples were taken at week 0 and 11 of the study and analyzed for safety
Total cholesterol increased slightly in the VLCKD group, while it decreased in the traditional western group
However, this rise was driven by an increase in HDL in the VLCKD group (6.69 mg/dl) compared to the western (-1.6 mg/dl) with no changes in LDL
Total testosterone increased significantly in the VLCKD diet (118 ng/dl) as compared to the western (-36 ng/dl) while insulin increased significantly in the western group (3.7 uIu/ml) compared to the VLCKD (.1 uIu/ml)
Concluded that a VLCKD is safe and increases testosterone levels while also increasing insulin sensitivity
Even though the total cholesterol increased in the VLCKD group, their HDL (healthy cholesterol) drove this response

    Estrogen
    Study - Nutrition & Metabolism
11 overweight women with a clinical diagnosis of PCOS were recruited for the study - they were instructed to limit their carb intake to 20 grams or less per day for 6 months
In the 5 women who completed the study, there were significant reductions from baseline to 24 weeks in body weight (-12%), percent free testosterone (-22%), LH/FSH ratio (-36%), and fasting insulin (-54%)
2 women actually became pregnant during the study despite previous infertility problems
To sum, the women lost an average of 12% of their body weight, dropped their fasting insulin levels by 54% and their LH:FSH ratio improved, which made it likelier for normal ovulation to occur
Concluded that the hyperinsulinemia of PCOS increases androgen secretion from the ovary as well as to decrease circulating s hormone binding globulin (SHBG)
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
    Inflammation
    NLRP3 & Joint Inflammation
NLRP3 inflammasome, an immune system receptor linked to inflammation
The NLRP3 inflammasome reacts quickly to threats to the body, such as toxins, infections, or too much glucose
Study - Ketones block the NLRP3 Pathway
The NLRP3 inflammasome is a primary driver in the development of arthritis and joint pain - inhibiting the NLRP3 results is reduced inflammatory pain
A study published in the journal Nature Medicine found that bHB strongly inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway
bHB was shown to reduce NLRP3 mediated inflammatory cytokine (IL-1B and IL-18) production in human monocytes.
As such, bHB’s inhibition of the NLRP3 pathway is likely a key mechanism driving the anti-inflammatory effects consistently seen in fasting and the ketogenic diet
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
    Muscle Recovery
Glycogen depletion, lactate accumulation, and oxidative stress are considered the main factors promoting exercise-induced fatigue.
One study found that the lactate concentrations were significantly lower after KD administration, resulting in a 50% reduction in lactate concentrations 30 min after exercise commencement compared to the non-KD group
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
    What to do Differently
    More Protein
Published in International Journal of Obesity, researchers looked at protein intake and lean body mass preservation during energy intake restriction in overweight older adults
61 overweight and obese men and women (63±5 years) were randomly assigned to either a high protein diet (HP; 1.7 g kg per day; n=31) or normal protein diet (NP; 0.9 g kg(-1) per day; n=30) during a 12-week 25% energy intake restriction
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
Cruciferous Veggies to Support DIM/IC3 Levels to control Estrogen for Men
DIM is a naturally occurring byproduct of indole-3-carbinol (IC3), and IC3 itself is a byproduct of glucosinolate glucobrassicin, which is a compound found in all cruciferous vegetables, such as: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and kale
In particular, IC3 helps the liver to metabolize estrogen more efficiently via upregulating the CYP1A2 enzyme (CYP1A2 is an enzyme that helps to break down toxins in our bodies)

rodman410 I think you're missing the point. While weight loss does assist in less pressure on the joints, it's only a portion of the reduction in pain. Keto done right, is the largest factor in reducing pain, as it greatly reduces inflammation within the body. He spoke about this for a large portion of the video. People who have joint problems have pain even when not walking, which is why walking itself is next to impossible for many.

    Timestamps / main points:
11:09 - Increase protein intake to around 30%.
12:29 - Eat more cruciferous vegetables (Broccoli, Bok choy, cauliflower, etc) except for women with thyroid issues.
14:46 - Women should consume a small amount of healthy organic Phytoestrogens (such as Edamame)
15:13 - Add lots of turmeric and curcumin to your diet (even add it to your bulletproof coffee!)
15:43 - Find good sources of collagen (either from normal food, or from supplements)
16:10 - Do one longer term fast per week (24 hours or more) instead of intermittent fasting, to regrow stem cells.
17:58 - Add more minerals to your diet (sodium, potassium, salt, etc) and stay well hydrated.
18:44 - Eat foods which are easy to digest (ground beef / chicken, etc)
19:05 - Consume lots of pre-biotic fibres (lots of asparagus, artichoke, swiss chard, etc)

Thomas - great content as usual. I’m 52 and been keto for over 8 years and started IF recently. Dropped over 60lbs in my first year from 230 down to 167. I have been able to keep the weight off even if I go on week long “benders” when I’m on vacation. I get back to my now normal way of eating and 2 weeks later I’m back to the same weight and seeing my abs again. In better shape now than when I was in university - and also using a lower pant size than then (even though I was in decent shape at that point).

I don’t feel the same energy as I did in the beginning and presume it’s peri-menopausal systems (lots of what you talked about in this video). Expanding on more would be amazing! Thank you!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.....I'm 68 and have been on Keto for about a year...lots of weight loss, also loss of that cortisol effect that had my shoulders up around my ears...have taken steroids off and on for health issues for 40 some odd years but now doctors are taking me off some daily non-steroid meds and my routine blood tests come back with beautifully normal results...one thing I started about a week ago: I added a Kelp supplement (can't stand the taste of those dried Kelp sheets!) which is one vegetarian capsule daily WOW! i've never gotten the energy surge with Keto despite all other benefits...NOW I have energy, a desire to get up early in the morning and the motivation to get on with things I'm always planning in my head but never doing...for years I've been taking a low amount of thyroid (synthroid) but it didn't help my energy increase.

I'm 43 and lost over 50lbs. In 6 months. I had to slow down on keto and Omad fasting, I'm 6'2 and have always been around 210. I dropped down to 156 and lost 8 inches off my waist before I knew it! People at work thought I was sick and my family thought I was suffering from anorexia but I always felt fine. I stopped Omad and still do keto put a few pounds back on but kept my new wast size. All that being said The best thing is my blood pressure has gone back to normal doing keto and I don't have to take medication for it anymore. I does work!...

I'm 43 lost over 60, did a refeed after a year and it threw me off the wagon...drop kicked me way the hell off actually. I plateaued for 3 months and thought it would help. Now I'm on day 80 of zero cheats and doing very well. Incorporate 20 hour fasting and that has taken me to a whole new level.

I'm 59, 6'1" , have T2 Diabetes for 20+ years. Was 360 lbs in Feb 2018. Began Keto, added IF a few months later. Lost 70 lbs but not much noticeable body fat. Blood Sugars came down quite a bit. So on Mother's Day I quit taking my insulin and began eating OMAD with generally 20 - 24 hours between meals. Have lost 16 lbs since, and more importantly a few inches off my waist. Feeling great, plenty of energy, blood sugar levels within "normal" range although I wish they would get consistently lower. (85 - 95 instead of 105 - 115)

I'm a bit of a science/medical nerd so I just love the info you give. I've lost 30 lbs so far and I am feeling fantastic. I do a 24 hr fast 3 times a week. I didn't even consider my age when I started this but I think it would be great to hear more about how I can or should be doing things differently at 60. I'm fascinated by the subject of autophagy! By the way, brain fog was a problem before keto and I thought I just had to accept it as part of getting older - not so! I'm sharper than I have been in years!

Thank you! Thank you! LOVE watching your channel. Your story so reminds me of my Son#2. Although we had already been gluten-free, because we found he was Celiac (which changed my health hugely), three years later we found he had a gene for Reactive Arthritis (HLA B-27). We eliminated dairy, turned that gene off, and he very easily dropped 125lbs over a 2-year span. Today, 16yrs later, he is the picture of health, although the doctors told us there was nothing they could do. I just turned 65, so this is immensely helpful! As a health coach, I've been teaching gluten-free and blood-type nutrition forever, as it helped us reverse so many things, but I tip-toed into the keto world. I am NO longer tip-toeing, because I am LOVING how I feel. I've always kept an open mindset, have done IF for years, but this "old dog" has learned some new tricks and is embracing the keto lifestyle. PLEASE do more for those over 40, but especially over 50! There are a LOT of us out there. :)

My question: is there any difference in keto between over 40 and over 70? BTW my scale tells my that I'm at 16% body fat with a BMI of 24.5. I get aerobic and anaerobic workouts in twice a week and yes, the recovery time doesn't allow for more, plus the danger of overuse injuries is enhanced at my age. Love the videos. Nathan
