  • Sure, you can get sticker shock at the gas station, but you don't have to give up your sport-utility vehicle. You don't even have to give up the carlike luxury trimmings you've come to expect as part of the SUV experience.
That's what the 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML320 Bluetec and 2008 Lexus RX 400h are meant for.

I can corner pretty well with the AWD version of the RX 400h. When I go too fast cornering all four tires will slip and make noise. It never feels dangerous and never loses control. They're driving pretty fast on the slalom - and you can drive it fast because it has the power available. Because it is an SUV you have to be cognizant of the weight transitions when cornering or doing slalom - makes you a better driver. =)

Don't think you will get that out of a gasoline Merc. The ML series truck has some of the worst resale value I have ever seen. The 1st and 2nd generations have a terrible track record for reliability. Just check the consumer report or JD powers reports. I think Merc are stylish and great cars when they aren't in the shop, which it not offen.

My ML320 can tow 7000lbs. The ML is more truck like than the RX400, especially weighing in at nearly 5000lbs curb weight (4970 to be exact). The diesel will always outperform on long distance trips. If you aren't regenerating the battery in the RX400 then you have to rely on the less efficient gas engine. City driving the hybrid should be the champ. My ML has clocked in 30 mpg in highway driving.

Hybrid diesel will arrive in a few years; the first european hybrid to be on sale will be the S400, and hybrid diesel should arrive late 2009 (2010 for French manufacturers). The 308 Hybrid is said to use 3,5L/100km (80mpg). It seems possible because the 1L6 diesel already use 5L/100 km in a 308 (55mpg).

To counter your ramblings with fact:
    • Noisy: The test of the BMW 535d and 545i on Top Gear indicated a dramatically quieter ride in the diesel - it produced more power low in the rpm range.
    • Stinky: Old diesels smelled because of sulphur, which has been almost completely eliminated from diesel now. Gasoline emissions smell bad because of HC.
    • Dirty: The bluetec system incorporates the inherent efficiency of the diesel and advanced pollution control to provide a very clean engine.

ok, now the diesel costs exactly $2070 more than the standard car. in my area, regular gas is like 2.66 and diesel is like 3.30. the diesel gets 35 mpg avg and the regular car gets 25. now, i assume that the average person drives 1,000 miles per month. at this, the regular car would cost $106.40 each month. the diesel: $94.40 each month. thats just 12$ saved each month!!! from a $2,000 premium!!! it would take 128 months to make a profit. how does diesel pay over a hybrid?

After 150,000 miles the average person is going to be buying a new car period. Plus by that time battery technology will be alot less expensive.
The Mercedes Blutec system uses what's called the "Adblue" system. This adds a fluid made from natural gas called Urea to the fuel and reduces sulpuric content. This makes it pass emissions. The fluid only lasts for 10,000 miles and once it runs out the car is designed to not start untll u get it replaced. This could get expensive as well.

No! That is not the whole point. The whole point is to start using an alternative fuel. Not gasoline, diesel, ethanol, or hydrogen! How about just plain old electricity? We rely on it every single day, so let's bring back the electric cars and head back to the drawing board for battery designs. Electric cars provide instant torque and acceleration unlike other fuels. All we need are environmentally friendly electricity generating stations harvesting electricity with zero emissions. Let's start!

i agree that you should drive the diesel
but so should grandma, she would prob get 45 if your getting 29 beating on it
diesels are so much better, no ignition system to go wrong, no huge battery to lug around and what about the environmental effects when that battery is thrown out? what will they do with all that acid and special ionic metals??
    americans need to wake up
i love my E320 CDI, gets 40mpg and is a lovely beast
    DIESEL 4 LIFE!
    JUST DRIVE ONE!

Yup, the MB may be the best looking machine here, but... cant people recognize that Hybrids are here to stay? They are slowly becoming cheaper to make and they, well, they use less fuel than other vehicles. Isnt that what we want? Toyota wins again.

Modern diesels burn more clean than before. TDI's don't have the smoke anymore. What do you mean diesels burns way dirtier than petrol? Diesels rule!

Also, i never understood automakers attempting to make fuel-efficient SUVs. Thats almost as pointless as giving an obese person a make-over. Sure they'll look better but theyre still fat. Same in this case, yeah it gets decent mpg's.......for an SUV. if any of you watching this video want a practical utility vehicle with good fuel economy, check out some new station wagons. (Dodge magnum, Subaru Legacy, Volvo V70, VW Passat, and BMW 3-series) all get more mpg, equal utility, and cost less.

listen to me, diesel does not pay. but my words mean nothing without facts right? to prove this, i decided to calculate the cost of fueling a tdi jetta vs a regular one. ill say it in another comment cuz it wont fit here.

That Lexus is so boring. I like the new ones but the old ones were just dull. The ML320 is better. Less dull, nicer interior, and it’s not a hybrid.

Hybrid cars only have advantages in the city: While driving in the country, you won't save any fuel, because you don't have to break, if you drive carefully -you will even need more fuel, because of the additional weight.
Ofcourse driving a hybrid in the city is simply great because you have to break a lot...
