  • The small town of Ocoee, Florida is the site of an infamous race massacre, the result of white people's outrage over a pair of Black men attempting to vote. The town, and students who want to know the state's history, as well as their own, are pushing back against new state education standards from the DeSantis administration, that would distort and dilute the teaching of this important event. Alex Wagner reports.

I'm a 72 year old white man, and I was lucky enough to be educated on the civil rights movement by my two older brothers when I was a teenager. But it's in only in the last few years that I've become aware of the fact that, across the country, entire black communities were wiped out. Now that I'm aware of Ocoee, I wonder how many more have occurred that I'm still not aware of. And it's beyond despicable that these politicians want to hide this history.

I’m a Florida girl born and raised, never heard of Ocoee Massacre or Rosewood until my mid twenties. Didn’t even question where black people were before slavery until a white teacher passionate about education asked my class the question in an African American History class in COLLEGE. I was reluctant to take the class because every year we were taught the same stories for black history and history in K-12 so I thought I knew it all. Until this day, that was my favorite and most fulfilling class, and outside of the horrors, our history is RICH. If it doesn’t get passed in schools, regardless, make an effort, to learn your history.

Still- I’ve never heard about this and DeSantis and others want us to learn less?!?? The whitewashing that is happening in this country is ridiculous. Please, please, keep sharing our history- elders that know PLEASE put these stories on line for future generations. It may be the only way people ever know. “Those who don’t learn about history are guaranteed to repeat it!!” We must not allow the fascist leaders to take away the knowledge of the horrific atrocities committed in this country, nor can we let them repeat those acts! I grew up in California and I learned about the Japanese Interment Camps than Slavery (there was only a paragraph in 8th Grade), my mother would bring me books from the library at UC Berkeley to fill in the gaps. Not all Black students are fortunate enough to have parents to do the teaching that the schools don’t. Florida is out of control with the spreading of flat out LIE…. There are maps you can find that list all the Massacres of Black towns across the US. Look up about Sun Down Towns (they still exists), look up the Green Book - Traveling Guide for African Americans. How you are not aware of the history of your own state speaks volumes of the lies that are told to keep the truth of the sheer brutality exacted on Black people. The rapes, the beatings, the tar and feathering, the lynchings. Look up every town in Florida and I PROMISE you they all have a brutal past against Blacks and Native Americans. Slavery was brutal and violent, Jim Crow continued it, then the laws were pasted to keep Black people in certain neighborhoods and schools, it’s all still going on around you right now. I'm a 53 year old black woman who grew up in West Palm Beach, FL. I'm ashamed to say this is the first that I'm hearing of the Oconee Massacre. I've heard and read about Rosewood as one of the survivors resided in West Palm Beach and lived blocks away from where I attended elementary school. There was some sort of massacre in West Palm Beach too and we lived 1 street over from the mass gravesite. Right now I don't remember what my mon taught us about that massacre but I'm definitely going to ask her again. I'm proud of these students, they are the prime example of why historical education is important. History doesn't need to be watered down or debated, just give it to us straight and let all of us work to be and do better.

Inspiring story. In our Vermont town it was a group of students who researched with our local historical society the true story of who fought from our town in the Civil War. The local monument left out any mention of the black soldiers and the poor whites who took the place of rich whites who did not want to serve. The numbers on the monument were false. Telling the truth is never "over." More power to young people everywhere who work with their communities to tell the actual story of our nation.

@arturbello4213 I was a Language Arts and social studies teacher for 26 years, so I would say that the key is not to learn about specific events, but instead the broader themes of history using events as examples. No one can know or teach everything, but these days it is important to understand time periods, major events, how different factors influenced each other, etc. Back in the 90’s when all of the high stakes state and national mandated tests started, our history curriculums began to suffer due to the fact that they could not be tested in the same way that reading, writing, and math could be. So the time devoted to social studies and history was reduced in many districts. Unfortunately, I believe that is part of why we see so many people without the understanding of why what we are experiencing currently as a country is so very dangerous. It is so important that one understands and is able to put things into a broader context.

If anything teaching real history will inoculate us from the virus of racial hatred.
You can dog whistle MAGA when everyone recognizes it from Ronald Reagan's "Southern Strategy".
You can't scream the "Chinese virus" when everyone recognizes it as the same lies that led to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
When you realize that there was a large population of Mexicans by ethnicity only, fighting for Texas independence from Mexico at the Alamo, everyone is forced to see Dreamers and others raised in America as Americans.
Basically if you know your history, every negative thing this weird libertarian/conservative mash-up Republican party tries to get you to believe falls apart. Their clever talking points are revealed as discredited untruths from our past.

The need to cast yourself as superior runs high over the whole planet, even in countries that are nearly completely black or black-dominated.

YES! And ALL of the truth!
Joe Biden inexplicably surrounded himself with racists, made racists comments and supported racist policies, has a history of supporting segregation and anti bussing issues and even gave eulogy for supreme klans man.
Joe Biden advocated and passed strict policies and laws that negatively impacted mostly black and people of color, bragged about throwing people in jail for almost anything!
Joe Biden voted to bar the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare from requiring schools to provide information on the racial makeup of their student bodies - thereby making it impossible for the government to withhold federal funds from school districts that refused to integrate
The NAACP called Biden’s proposal “an anti-black amendment.” The Senate’s sole African-American member, Ed Brooke, called it “the greatest symbolic defeat for civil rights since 1964.” But Biden helped his fellow liberals reconcile themselves to the wrong side of history by recasting integrationists as the real racists.
“The new integration plans being offered are really just quota systems to assure a certain number of blacks, Chicanos, or whatever in each school. That, to me, is the most racist concept you can come up with,” Biden stated “What it says is, ‘In order for your child with curly black hair, brown eyes, and dark skin to be able to learn anything, he needs to sit next to my blond-haired, blue-eyed son.’

The only overt act I know of during my lifetime ( until now ) was in 1963 when the town of Sanford filled in their three public swimming pools rather than integrate them. Thank you for sharing this tragic chapter in Ocoee's history. We should all be aware of these atrocities. I am a descendant of a family who owned slaves in Virginia. What my family did is a deeply shameful part of my personal history. However, my parents and grandparents taught me the truth about my heritage. The good AND the bad. When my daughter started learning about slavery in school, I had a hard conversation with her about our own part in that history. She cried about being from a family who took part in this chapter of history. Even as a child, she understood right from wrong and knew this should NEVER have happened to ANYONE. As and adult she has many friends who are Black, Latino,, Asian, LGBTQ+, Immigrants, Disabled and of different religions. She is kind and empathetic. She sees others as just different and seeks to learn their own stories. She has given me many moments of pride in her life but this part of who she is gives me the most. Prejudice is a choice! Lastly, she wrote a debate paper in high school about whether our Constitution should be changed to reflect our current era as a country. She argued that the part where "All men are created equal" should be changed to "All PEOPLE are created equal". I agree. Thank you for reading this.

They want conservatives to feel they are losing their children to “indoctrination.” They see diversity and inclusion as woke. Yet the term really is about waking up about realities and injustices people face. Apparently that’s offensive.

Children deserve to learn the truth of our history as Americans! The good, the bad, the beautiful and the Ugly! How else can they deal with the world as it is if they don't know how it got this way! Babies aren't born prejudiced. Children don't care what color their friend is until someone tells them they should! Teach the Truth! So proud of the teachers that refuse to teach lies🤗. So proud of the kids for speaking out

Totally brainwashed by a progressive agenda that polarizes people by class warfare, race hustling . They are not part of solution, they will continue the lies of race in this country

This is actually where the solution lies. Students can take the initiative and ask their history teachers questions that are worded in a manner that require factual responses. The students have the power to cancel out what the Governor is trying to do. Figuratively speaking, if we send children out to fight this battle, will they turn fire hoses and dogs on them?
