A lot of smiles, back in the day, whenever a Ray Stevens novelty song came on the radio. The Streak Shriners Convention The Haircut Song Guitarzan Ahab the Arab Take the plunge!
I was born in Pascagoula in 1957. My dad was the pastor of a Baptist church there. We loved this song. My dad passed away a couple of years ago, followed by mom 13 days later.
You just can't beat Ray Stevens voice. He has the most perfect voice for uplifting music. Try any of his songs and videos. He was so humorous. He's one of my favorites. I own his albums and listen to them as I drive.
Because Ray Stevens is so funny and has so many novelty songs, it's too easy to overlook his musical talent. He has such a beautiful voice and has composed some absolutely lovely songs. Love that you noticed!
Harri, What you have here is the "KING" of the novelty songs. This song has nothing to do with the holidays its just a fun song to listen to 🎶🎶👊🏾Nice reaction.
My dad memorized every word of this song and used to sing it to me and my three brothers growing up! 😂 always brings back some fun memories when I come across this song!
he is such a great musician, and a fantastic lyricist. every line in his songs says something hilarious. you cant help but smile, laugh, sing and dance whenever one of his songs come on. his greatest hits cassette got me through four years of high school h3ll. please check out "Sitting Up With the Dead". again, his writing is top-notch and the video will definitely crack you up. so happy that you liked this.
As a kid we were out of power for a week but we had the radio going on batteries and every morning at 8am they played this song. It was funny. And it made us smile. Ray Stevens music does that. You should play more of his music.
If you like this one, you will really like another Ray Stevens classic called "Sittin' Up With the Dead." Ray Stevens also did serious songs and had a few hits there as well. A great example of this is his #1 hit "Everything is Beautiful."
I love this song! I started listening to you because of your moody blues videos. We had a squirrel lose in our church....during the service. We didnt have a revival, but it was a memorable service.
I love Ray Stevens get a lot of fun songs you got some serious ones too. One of my I really like was called Mr. businessman it’s well worth a listening to.
I remember listening to Ray Stevens growing up- he definitely had some funny stuff back in the day. Gotta check out The Streak, Shriner's Convention and Ballad of the Blue Cyclone
YES!!! RAY STEVENS 😂😂😂 Not only was his songs a part of my childhood but also his Flav-O-Rich commercials are burned in my brain. To this day his "Flaaaayyyy Voooohhh Riich" still pops in my head on occasion 🤣🤣🤣
I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful reactions. You were the very 1st reaction I ever saw. You reacted to Stairway to Heaven. It was great. Music during my era was really good. You might want to try Ram Jam singing "Black Betty". Have a good day, sir.
Next try Jim Stafford's "Wildwood Flower/Weed" another novelty song from the same era, and one of my childhood favorites eventhough I had no idea it was about Marijuana, lol.😊
The Ballad of Cactus Pete and Lefty is probably my favorite from Ray Stevens. I never realizes that he was such a good singer - always remembered him for the comedy.
And for those who don't know, Home Free is acapella (except on a very few songs), and the video is animated, with characters based on many of the prominent cartoon styles of the 90s.
I grew up in Mississippi.. Believe me, he did't have to do much research to find those characters. You couldn't throw a brick without hitting a self-righteous church-goer.
I was born a Methodist preacher's kid in Iowa. I knew a bunch of people even as far north as 45 miles shy of the Minnesota border who would kinda deserve a squirrel climbing up their "Sunday best" to humble their self-righteous ways. You find that high-horse sort of people everywhere...*sighs* 🙄 I'd rather commune with the squirrels. At least they're entertaining and cute. 😅
He had hits in the U.K. with The Streak and Everythin is Beautiful. And the comments here have reminded me of others that were certainly played on the radio here, Misty and I’m my own Grandma. Never heard this squirrel one before though. Thanks! Thinking of quirky songs has reminded me of Jake Thackeray and ‘$ister Josephine’ - That’s one you should check out, Harri!
Ray Stevens is a master of comedic songs. The Streak, Guitarzan, Ahab the Arab, and The Shriner's Convention, just to name a few. Also check out Roger Miller with King of the Road and You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd.

No lie, this really happened....one time I went to visit my cousins in Southeastern Kentucky and we were at church and we could hear from outside a man was moaning and crying for help. The people thought he was filled with the Holy Spirit and got so much more excited. Then when church was over and everyone went out, the man who had been moaning and crying was still shaking, holding the butt of a cigarette and on the ground in front of him was a huge copperhead snake. It was the time of the summer when snakes shed their skin. He could not see the man but he knew the man was there. The man wasn't moving anywhere.

I'm glad you noticed the name of the church. Many listeners don't notice the sarcastic name.

You would probably really like Yebba's video Evergreen. There's not only a choir, but backup singers filmed in a church.
I'm not Christian, but his song "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex on His Television Show" is a great commentary on the church.
You would love his I want to sing and dance.or would Jesus wear a rolex
You haven't seen his "The Streak" "Don't look Ethel" :)
