    What I have always used is the factory windshield washer squirter system with washer fluid instead of water. The washer system is already there just simply move the nozzles. Washer fluid contains alcohol which evaporates faster providing better cooling. Lastly the washer system typically holds 1 gallon/3.79l and is easy to refill. Or you can also take the washer system from another car at a junkyard. Basically the bottle, washer pump, any momentary switch, some hoses, spray nozzles, and some wire. Check many different cars and trucks for different designs and sizes to fit your car. I'm happy with the 1.5l washer system I got from a 1960's mustang. It uses a bag similar to an I.V. bag instead of a hard plastic bottle. The heavy duty bag allows mounting in tight odd shaped locations and the pump is already installed inside the bag.

      I was going to say the same thing, but use a clap valve to redirect the water and still keep both washer sprayers on your hood

      Alcohol has a latent heat roughly 1/3 of water, which is a negative.
      Latent heat is the amount of energy released or absorbed during phase change; in other words by introducing alcohol into the system you are lowering the amount energy that will be absorbed during the evaporation.

    • @nutnfan1
      @nutnfan1 Před 10 lety +2

      GillTy Yep. Faster evaporation is not as efficient.

      Exactly what I was thinking D J Dragon. Could also use a combo of water methanol, or water alcohol, and mixing yourself is hella cheap!

    • @nutnfan1
      @nutnfan1 Před 10 lety

      Gary Looper Use straight water for this. For water INJECTION, like spraying it into the intake to reduce knock, then methanol is a good idea.

    With that can air filter watch out for big puddles. I put one on a previous car and drove through a large amount of water and hydro locked the engine because water splashed up in the engine bay. No joke, it was a bad day. Stock filters the air duct curves around and is much harder for water to get sucked in.

    I told this to my dad, that we could do it. But he asked, is it deionised (/demineralized? Don't know the translation) water? As normal water might leave calcic on your intercooler and insulate it.. (sorry if the translations are wrong, all these names are different in Holland :3)

  • @Darkalchohol

    Another good idea and also on a budget is actually using one of the windshield sprayers which actually has a little motor that jet sprays just extend the hose and run it to your intercooler and spray just by pulling your wiper controls instead of pumping while you driving and come with own little water tanka :)

  • @BIGBOICOMBO
    @BIGBOICOMBO Před 9 lety

    this System is a bit tricky to some so here's mine:
    what you need is:
    1 - a tube similar to the one that used for your windshield sprayers
    2- a tri-tube link
    3- something that acts as a remote valve closer (this is optional and sometimes may replace the tri-tube connector, also likely remote controlled)*
    4- a nozzle (one that can spray the entire intercooler and fits in the tube you're gonna use)
    how to:
    1- open hood
    2- locate Windshield Spray hoses
    3- best if cut in the very beginning of it to make a better look and efficient system
    4- we're gonna refer to the Sprays hose part with SH and the Motor part with MP
    stick the Tri-tube in the MP so it leaves 2 open ends
    5- now select one of the ends and link it to the close valve, after that link the other end of the close valve to the SH
    6- if your valve is remotely controlled better test it now and if it's functional then go to step 8
    7- if your valve is switch controlled then it's easy sometimes to run the cables to the interior and stick it to where you want
    8- now run the 2nd open part with a hose to the intercooler....link the hose with the spray after correctly placing it facing the intercooler
    that's it! when you want your intercooler to be "cool" just lock the valve and spray! the windshield sprays might lose pressure but....yeah

    This "mod" will only make a noticeable difference in desert climates, where humidity is very low. Evaporative coolers (a.k.a - swamp - coolers) are widely used in desert climates. You'll see a lot of them in Arizona. They work very well when humidity stays below 15% (usually during March through early June). They are worthless in high humidity climates. This should have been mentioned to save time and money for people who may try to duplicate this "invention".

    @123etgwbvgdcfawsfr Před 10 lety +4

    Well the chemistry of it doesn't really rely on the watering needing to evaporate.
    Water has a higher specific heat capacity than the metal of the intercooler, so the water absorbs the energy (heat) from the intercooler, making it cooler. Evaporating is just an after effect when the water gets hot enough to evaporate.
    So, using the getting out of the pool analogy, you get out of the pool it feels cooler because the water on your body has a higher specific heat capacity than the air around you and your body.
    Hope this explanation is clear
    Btw cool mod, someone should design a system where it automatically sprays water depending on the throttle and/or the temperature of the intercooler

      so in saying that, for the people thinking about putting ice in there bottle to make the water colder. would that be going backwards as the water would need to get to a temperature that it can absorb the heat?

    • @mrs_radrod
      @mrs_radrod Před 10 lety

      no a cooler water temp has a higher probibility of taking more heat away from the system

    Fellas, it would probably much easier to adapt a second windshield washer reservoir and pump with multiple nozzles. The reservoir could also be modified to have a float switch to inform when it is near empty. Additionally, in wintertime you could run with windshield wash fluid to keep it from freezing.

  • @VF28WWE
    @VF28WWE Před 10 lety +4

    actually a front mount on WRX's and STi's is really stupid because a top mount inter cooler is right near the turbo and cools it down a lot better. in the front mount you have to have the air travel from the front of the bumper travel all the way up the cooler pipes which by the time the air reaches the turbo and it is a lot hotter on the top mount the cold air that get's sucked up from the hood scoop gets there a lot quicker which means it is going to be a lot colder too because it does not need to travel trough all the piping. so a front mount is not really clever doing even with a bigger inter cooler the air going to be hotter then the top mount anyway because it travels from the bottom all the way up trough the pipes which are near the engine and the engine is hot which means it is going to make the air hotter which is not so good as the top mount

    • @crimsonpyro2539
      @crimsonpyro2539 Před 10 lety +11

      You do relies an inter-cooler is to cool the air after its been though a hot turbo... Right?

    • @splewy
      @splewy Před 10 lety +5

      I don't think you understand what intercoolers do. They're not used to cool the air entering the turbo. They're used to cool the air after it has exited the turbo.

    • @mrs_radrod
      @mrs_radrod Před 10 lety

      splewy I think that he means the intake air has to travel a longer distance to the intake and will get warmer going through the engine compartment again. I'm not sure about that reasoning though. Most top mounts arent so great because the turbo is directly under the top mount

    ~$4,000 turbo system.
    $25 Watercooled IC spray.
    I had a PC CPU watercooler pump die years ago. I grabbed an aquarium water pump and some vinyl hose, hooked it up and ran water through the radiator for a couple of days with a 5 gallon Homer's bucket reservoir until the new one showed up. XD You could probably rig up something similar with an electric switch on your dashboard instead of that silly goofy hand pump, lul.

    Very smart. I think I have a leak in one of my gromits for my VW 1.8T Wagons washer tank so I gotta mess with it anyway. Not a bad idea since at the moment I am still running the side mount intercooler. I wouldn't go for the pump option. I will continue to use that for cleaning my engine bay so I can avoid electrics.

    The water its self is making it colder. It takes 4.17 Joules to heat one gram of water one degree. So that will absorb energy, then the latent heat of evaporation for water is, 0.334 Joules per gram. So actually its cooling the intercooler down much more as the water gets heated up compared to win its evaporating.

  • @sickgr33k
    @sickgr33k Před 10 lety

    you could probably just put a vaccume line from the engine in the other end of the bottle and whenever you are making boost the spray will activate. Seems like a great idea if your taking the car to a track day and want to keep the radiator cool... you could also go as far as putting a large water tank in the car and having sprays mounted near the brake disks to cool them if your pushing the car hard at the track as well hahah

    Some budget ideas to extend this. 1. Use a hobbs switch and relay in combination with the washer fluid pump to turn on when boost is on (no need to waste concentration and time pushing a switch). 2. Is there anyway to hook a up a way one valve that builds up pressure and then a pressure regulator to release the water at a certain pressure (don't know if it would release enough to spray a good pattern).

    this idea can also be implemented on the radiator of normal aspirated cars to help cool especially in the tropics!
