The Arise album is honestly up there with one of the best thrash metal albums of all time (IE Rust in Peace, Master of Puppets etc).

Rust in Peace, was more a Heavy metal sound. This was more like Thrash Metal.
I've listened to Arise, Korn's first album, and Tool's Aenema more than any other album (literally months on end for each), so yea I'd agree Arise is a classic masterpiece from beginning to end. And then they decided fuck it, we need a cool arse intro for concerts too! My face melted the first time I heard that!

Arise album is probably the pinnacle of Sepultura albums, it's a classic. I would suggest "Desperate Cry" next.

Dolly's stank face is on point. That is the correct amount of stank face when listening to old school Sepultura. They didn't call these guys The Brazilian Godzillas for nothing. They didn't kill it on stage. They destroyed it on stage.
Saw them right before Max left. Sometime in 96 and out of the many amazing shows I’ve seen it was the most violent. At one point, I thought I might die. They were fucking amazing live.
They went from Death Metal (before it existed) with Morbid visions and Schizophrenia to thrash with Beneath the Remains and Arise (their masterpiece IMO) to Groove with Chaos AD and Nu Metal with Roots. And all of it is amazing. No one else has successful done that. Great great band.

Death metal still in their edge after 1987, especially live, with Max Vocals and heaviness ..
Its too brutal to be thrash.
Its mixed.
When you watch compil of the tours with the opening bands like Sacred Reich and Sick of it all, When Sepultura kicks in, the space in the sound the vibe and Max going " Wooohh " you realize that some of their entity belongs to the first wave death metal.

Man, back in the day Sepultura were the band to see. Brutally fast and aggressive but always a great time was had by all. You'd leave bloodied and bruised but very happy. The drummer Igor Cavalera never got his props for his playing ability.
Sepultura is from Brazil and so is Crypta which they add that South American Latin flavor to there heavy metal!!!!

When concerts were a proper experience. The sway, crush, frantic head banging and hair everywhere. Belfast Ulster hall in the nineties where they bombed the streets on the outside and it was safer on the inside at a thrash gig.

I don`t remember any rivalry. I never understood the thing about Slayer anyway. Metallica, Megadeth fuck yeah🤘. And Sepultura, best pure trash metal ever. But Slayer? Never got it.
When Arise exploded, there was an incident between Kerry King and Igor Cavalera at a festival. I don't remember which event now. Well, when a journalist asked about the rivalry between Sepultura and Slayer Igor simply replied: "Who is Slayer?" rs
