  • February 26, 2024 - Author Anne Stevenson-Yang discusses her new book “Wild Ride: A Short History of the Opening and Closing of the Chinese Economy,” where she provides front-row seat accounts of the events she experienced when she worked in China as an entrepreneur, lobbyist for U.S. business, publisher, tech startup founder, business commentator, and financial analyst for about three decades. She has also just published a collection of short fiction set in China titled Hello, Kitty and Other Stories. Yang first went to China in 1985, where she was enchanted by the lively cultural scene and what seemed to be the growing openness of the country’s political system. But there’s very little of that optimism left. Jeremy Goldkorn, editorial fellow with ChinaFile, moderates the conversation. (30 min., 44 sec.)

I am a little disappointed with the direction that the Asia Society has been going in since the departure of Kevin Rudd. I respect diverse perspectives and values such as those shared here. My wish in this is to see the Asia Society return to a more diverse stage of education and discussion on Asia. Kevin Rudd guided the Asia Society to a more international standing, and currently, I see a move towards a US-only mindset. China was great in 2018 and 2019 and is currently trying to make amends for the past several years. Yet little discussion is taking place about any of these positive initiatives.

I will continue to support the Asia Society for now. I only share my opinion because I care for this distinct and important institution.

CCTV in China has made it a Draconian society, but CCTV in Taipei subway makes it friendly for finding lost items. What a textbook example of double standard. And out of all the differences between mainland and Taipei, she thought about scratching fapiao.
It is good to have one’s own opinion. But such big bias and self-conflicting examples show that the Anne lacks the essential knowledge and credential to speak on this topic

lets stik to some facts: Taiwan election 2024. America State Dept has not crowed about the results. WHY? 39% voted for DPP> Participation rate of 70%. Despite the publicity, that means 29% of Taiwan people voted for DPP. If democracy mattered to the hypocrites of the west (ahem the woman interviewed), then this referendum result says 71% told America to stick it where the sun doesnt shine to be independent from Mainland China. BTW, the Tawiwanese live 98% as Mainland Chinese. The bias guest seems to suggest Taiwan people are so enlightened. HAHA

😂😂😂 China is hopeless. We all thought it can open up like South Korea and Taiwan but we all made a mistake. China is going backward.

@@ggc7318 Europe is going backwards. China is recognised as the other world super power. And as the number one threat /America's competition. Not sure on what planet you speak of, but CHINA is heading up the future infrastructure - both soft and hard organisations like BRICS etc. IT is leaving America in the dust. And yes, despite every single unjust actions thrown at China from America including a global hate campaign and threats behind closed doors at other nations that want to move closer to China, TRADE is going up and up between China and America STILL!!! rofl

dont rubbish Chinese people pls. Just because they are hard working and even if they have money they will still work hard. It is something other nations could learn from. Thanks for reminding me there is so much negative bias out there.
