  • In "Mower Graveyard", Taryl tackles this obsolete Onan engine on this old Toro Wheel Horse tractor. It lost spark and rather than try to guess as to what could have went out, Taryl's going to replace the whole ignition system to ensure it'll be running like new again. There's a lot to know about coils, trigger modules and the magnetic ring in order to get spark, and Taryl's gonna go over all that in this here video.
    Before and After the fix, East Coast Anthony isn't ready to give up on his favorite Lawn Boy mower. After receiving a tip from a creepy, smelly old man about a Mower Graveyard that brings dead mowers back to life, he can't help but give it a shot. What could go wrong right? A lot. As Taryl's 2023 Halloween how-to series continues with... Mower Graveyard.

      So I have a Lincoln welder generator at work because I’m a small engine mechanic that has no spark at all. We just ordered the exact same kit that replaces all of the ignition components and it still does not make spark I have checked and it’s getting a good 12 V all the wiring’s right and it came in originally with no Sparken well even after all the new components it’s still not making spark I’ve checked grounds I’ve been through a lot on that thing

    WOW. So cool that Taryl chose my 520h for a video! : )
    I have a good working 520h that is my primary mower that has 940 hours on it. I found this other one, non running, with 1600 hours on it and thought it would be good to have as a parts machine. But it was in a lot better condition overall than my original 520h so decided to take it to Taryls to see if he could fix it. He was not too enthusiastic about working on it, for all the reasons he relates in this video, but he agreed to do it. Elkskins found the parts I needed to order on Fleabay and I ordered them. Then after they came in, dropped them off at the shop. Hadn't heard from Taryl since then and was going to call him next week and see if he got anywhere with it and low and behold, I discover it's the subject of todays TFA video! : )

    That's a later Onan than what I worked on. They were used on Fairmont motor cars used for track inspecting. Points box easy to work on. Fuel pump mounted right on top easy to work on. Adjustable oil pressure. Carb mounted on top, easy to work on. Very reliable. All that crap packed into that tractor must be a pain to work on. Newer, bigger, better? Not so much. P.S. I have a CCK Onan on my mid '60's Miller welder/generator that still runs great. Easiest carb there is to rebuild. Thanks Taryl. Don't let them bury that Lawn Boy!

      @@bwood282I use mine for a backup power generator for my house. I've used it for farm welding and it runs 7018 and 6011 great. I drain the tank and run the gas out of it in the spring and charge the battery in the fall. It's a great machine. I had one on my mechanics truck back in the 80's so when one came up for sale I snapped it up. The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't have the idle down after running a bead.

    Awesome video Taryl. I first learned to work on small engines when my grandfather gave me an old crapsman garden tractor with the 20hp Onan. Clutch bearing went out and quit running. He left the tractor on which fried the ignition. After replacing all ignition parts it was a sweet sweet sound of hearing that old Onan running again. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.

  • @J.R.in_WV
    @J.R.in_WV Před 7 měsíci +4

    I agree I’m not a fan of the newer Onans like the P series, but the old CCK cast iron Onan flat twins are some of my favorite engines ever. They actually have a stroke that measure longer than the bore diameter, something very rare these days in small engines. While that means they don’t like to rev much past the 3600 RPM factory rated speed they make excellent torque and it’s hard to find any attachment used in any conditions that’ll make one lug down. They had the points and condenser ignition so no worries about trigger modules burning up and the standard 12V “beer can” coil for them is cheap and easy to get. Then seeing old lawn-boy with the capstan drive self propel was cool , they’re some of the toughest mowers out there, IMO the F engine lawn boys with the later model 3 speed belt drive self-propel are the best mowers ever made. OMC sure knew how to make 2 strokes.

    Terrific Chapter! Our old Wheel Horse 520 H/Onan with 1,500 hours was still working in 2012 but using a lot of oil while mowing the pasture at full throttle. Got a new Toro Time Cutter with Kawasaki OHV (and vertical shaft) V-Twin, a real work horse. Your video has inspired me to resurrect the old side-valve Toro/Onan still sitting in the shed, a fine garden tractor but as you say, hard to get parts. Thank You Taryl for your great videos, they have soul and they ring true! Did you ever notice what those 5 little holes at the top of the carburetor throat are for? When you turn the key, liquid fuel shoots out of them, giving a rich mixture and the engine starts right up every time. Clever!

Also bought ignition kit it came with a plug, wire and electronic control, which were also very cheap and haven't had any problems. Also found a muffler for $24.00 online, OEM Price was $112.00. I got the rider mower for free. Adjusted the valves, which were way out of adjustment. So, it probably cost me no more than $60.00. And watching you do what you do is a big help. I used Taryl’s method of removing flywheels to get the pulley off a slasher gearbox. The pulley has 6 x C section sheaves and would weigh about 20kgs. The shaft is tapered and is 60mm at the top of the taper so it is all fairly big. I used some splitting wedges between the housing and the pulley and hit the end of the pinion shaft, with the thread protected with the nut, with a 10lb sledge hammer. It came off easily. Thanks Taryl, you helped me big time. The machine is not a lawn mower but it still cuts grass about 12ft at a time. Jeff

      Yeah, IMO the blower shrouds facing out looks cool, but creates a problem. When mowing with my 520h, I have to stop every 15 min or so, to brush all the grass clippings and leaves off that grill as it has such strong suction, it clogs up easily, reducing the air intake to keep the engine cool. It's a huge flaw IMO. WH should have made some sort of L shaped cover to put over it so it sucks air from the top of the hood.

    Just one thought about replacing the Magnet Ring. Newer magnets are made from Neodymium which has a stronger magnetic flux than was available 40 years ago. So that might be why they are better.

    Reminds me of the time i had to remove the engine to replace the starter on my lamdlords homda ht3813 mower. It was a pain to remove the drive shaft to be able to get the engine out and hard to remove the flywheel nut cause i didn't have the right tools at the time but still managed to get it done

    Put another engine on that Lawn Boy.
    I have a nice old all - aluminum Craftsman mower from early 70s my dad bought new and I have been beating it to death ever since. I lost count of how many different engines I have had on the housing.
    It's nice and light and has quick change wheel adjustments.

    Taryl.... G.M. Delco coils on D.I.S. engines fire simultaneously just as these Onan coils fire. For 19.99 and a couple spade connections you can have a durable coil.

    Did that on a couple of small case skid steers. On a different note I love the Milwaukee fuel tools. I have that same ratchet, their die grinder, 3/8 impact and their 1/2 inch impact. Same as snap on for half the price.

    That blower shroud cover gave you a tuff time. It was the coil from a different boil that didn't give a spark . So its back to the ball game.

      It's interesting to me that no one is forwarding the idea of using wax instead of filament in 3D printers. Seems a natural choice for those who want to use it for casting. I've heard of some making the pattern with regular filament, but idk how good an idea using plastic is.

    I sent this to Mustie1 and now you to see if either of you will make a video to show this to others how to accomplish this, just an idea. I see a lot of folks that want the ability to mow with the chute up for various reasons. They use bungies , string or a piece of rope and that to me is so inconvenient. I have never shared this, but I've done this set up on every riding mower I've ever owned and it's fool proof. Use a hook and screw eye's to latch the chute up . Tis uses 1 latching hook, 1 suitable spring and 3 Screw eyes. Attach one screw eye to the side of the rear fender and two screw eyes to the chute. Test the distance of them before drilling to ensure the screw eyes are in the right location. Attach one screw eye on the chute with a spring, and the other end of the spring to the Latch hook, The second screw eye is also attached to the chute just far enough to just give the spring a little tension so the hook can be latched to that second screw eye firmly when chute is being used to keep it secure. Now when you want to open the chute the hook can be latched onto the screw eye mounted to the fender to keep the chute up and out of the way. This method also allows the deck to be raised and lowered when the chute is raised. This setup is on my 1999 Scotts S20hp/48 which still runs and operates fantastic, and my 2018 46" Scrub Cadet XT1. So simple & inexpensive, but absolutely effective. That setup has been on my Scotts since 1999 with the same hardware I originally used including the spring. My Riding mowers are kept clean and in doors when not in use so I hope this helps someone , if not there's always the option of a bungie or a piece of rope. LOL

    I am getting ready to overhaul an onan, it is a lot older than that one, it’s on an old Lincoln welder, points ignition and no starter, it powers the generator to start the engine. Oddly also getting ready to get into an old wheel horse tractor but it has a single cylinder kohler. I have actually considered repowering them both with harbor freight v twins

    Cummins bought Onan, so you can get some of these parts from Cummins a lot cheaper than John Deere. I bought an ignition module an ring for $109, but JD wanted $165 just for the module and the ring was anther $25.

    • @matthewtaylor2185
      @matthewtaylor2185 Před 8 měsíci

      @Trail-of-dead yeah, but they all sell high or they "just quit, probably something simple," or "probably just needs the carb cleaned." Then there are the running ones that look like they sat outside the last 30 years. I have known several that were more or less the same story as taryl told about his. If I'm going to do groundwork, I use a farm tractor. I want something to mow grass and pick up leaves. I have an f725 John deere, and I like the 345 for what I want...I would really like to find a 300 series hydro wheel horse in good shape.
